Minister’s Annual Report 2016

“With God all Things are possible” (Matt 19:26)

What a year, people…busy, busy, busy! A lot happened; we said our goodbyes to good friends, and celebrated our coming together in communities in numerous ways. Happy, sad, challenging: it reminded me again (again!) that, first, I serve three very generous congregations… and second, with God, everything is possible, by which I mean the minister does not have all the answers. Each Sunday, I celebrate with you two worships services: one in Iroquois and one in Matilda: often the worships are similar but sometimes they are not. So a big thank you to Brenda for preparing great worship bulletins and weekly “Work of the Church” notices, to keep everybody informed. A warm thank you too to the musicians and choirs, who add such a wonderful atmosphere to worship. I feel blessed to have 5 musicians and 3 choirs! I start each week by looking at the Sunday Scripture, deciding where the Spirit is leading me with them, choosing the hymns, and confirming with the musicians that the hymns are appropriate. Once that is done, I look at the meetings to attend and set-up a schedule of visits to be done, calls to return, and e-mails to send. Now, bear with me, that is what I decide on Tuesday. Almost half of the time, when I look back on Sunday afternoon at what has been done during the week, I realize it had nothing to do with what was planned on Tuesday. Oh well, these are the joys of ministry. To help me with these efforts, I read. I read about theology, spirituality, about themes around Sunday worship, and about exegesis of the bible texts: the machine needs to be kept fed and well-oiled if you want it to produce a sermon every week. I also read documents produced by the United Church, and the church has produced a lot of them lately, to help ministers discern and guide our congregations in these changing times.

Above and beyond these weekly activities, some highlights of this past year come to mind:

January saw an Iroquois Council meeting, an IMPC Council, a Presbytery executive meeting in

Chesterville, a Presbytery meeting in Cornwall, and the Iroquois Annual Meeting.

February saw the death and funeral of a friend, Doug Carnegie, the first talks in Iroquois about

the creation of a new “Social Committee”, a meeting in Hulbert-Valley of the IMPC Sacraments

& Worship Committee, the wedding of Dale and Valerie Devine in Hulbert-Valley, the Ash

Wednesday worship in Brinston, a worship at the Hartford, and the annual Meeting of Matilda

in Brinston.

March was another sad month with the death and funeral of Wayne Pulfer. I also attended a

Presbytery executive meeting in Chesterville, and we started a Lenten Bible Study. I produced

an Easter newsletter and led a chapel service with communion at the Hartford. Our Ecumenical

Good Friday service was at the Anglican Church in Iroquois, and our Easter services with

communion were held in Brinston and Iroquois. The month finished with a Presbytery meeting

in Alexandria.

In April we started a new Bible Study exploring “The Cup of our Life” with Joyce Rupp. I had a

Presbytery executive meeting in Chesterville, attended an IMPC Council Meeting in Iroquois,

and Iroquois welcomed the Seaway Valley Presbytery gathering.

In May, we had two baptisms in Brinston. We created a new banner for Pentecost in Iroquois.

We had a Council meeting in Iroquois, I led a chapel service with communion at the Hartford,

and we had an IMPC Sacraments & Worship meeting in Brinston. The end of the month saw

Matilda holding its Spring Fling event at Matilda Hall, while I was attending a one-day M&O

Conference at Wyman UC in Hudson, QC, which saw the ordination of Brenda Bailey, former

student-minister in Matilda.

In June we celebrated the wedding of Jason and Meghan McDermott in Hulbert-Valley. I

attended an Iroquois Council meeting, a Matilda Council meeting and an IMPC Council meeting.

On June 10, the coldest day of the whole summer, under a wet and cloudy sky, we had a great celebration of our 3 congregations at Brinston Park. The Presbytery refugee family were our guests, and the children finished the day playing soccer/baseball. I led a chapel service with communion at the Hartford, and celebrated the life of Gwen Hanes in Brinston.

July was vacation time, with our 3 congregations deciding to close for the five July Sundays

while I was on vacation for three of them. So, it was decided that I, and any other members

interested, would be attending the services of other denominations on the two July Sundays

that I was on deck while IMPC buildings remained closed. While I found the experience

interesting, the lack of response from the congregations indicated that it was not an experience

worthwhile repeating. In case our congregations might one day again decide to hold no Sunday

services during the month of July, I would advocate holding a weekly, informal, evening service

in a church basement instead (yes, because it is cooler), to keep our hands on God’s pulse even

during the sweltering heat of summer. During July I also worked with Brenda Bradley to change

our office from an Iroquois-oriented space to one that more completely reflected its role as an

IMPC service area.

August saw a Presbytery executive meeting in Chesterville, and a baptism in Hulbert-Valley.

In September, Iroquois celebrated its Anniversary in style with the participation of Ron Donnelly

and the Malboreens. Iroquois also said good-bye to Florence English. I attended two Presbytery

executive meetings in Chesterville. We also had an IMPC Worship and Sacraments meeting, and

I published a fall newsletter.

In October, Iroquois said good-bye to Wally McDonald. Brinston and Hulbert-Valley marked their Anniversaries with special celebrations and guest speakers. I attended a Presbytery executive meeting in Chesterville, a Matilda Board meeting in Brinston, and an IMPC Council in Hulbert-Valley. Our three churches catered the Wellness Day Luncheon in Matilda Hall. Brinston had its Craft Fair, and Matilda its Anniversary Supper, while I attended a 3-day meeting in Montreal.

In November, I organized the Remembrance services for the Canadian Legion in Iroquois and

Matilda. We also had one baptism in Iroquois, one in Brinston and five in Hulbert-Valley. I

attended an Iroquois Council Meeting and a special meeting in Brinston, a Presbytery executive

meeting, and a Presbytery meeting in Ingleside. Iroquois held their Snow Flake Bazaar. Then,

just as Advent began, Brinston said good-bye to Francis Henderson.

In December Iroquois said good-bye to Marion Gilmer, and Hulbert-Valley to Elaine Henderson.

I published an Advent newsletter and led a service chapel at the Hartford. This year we didn’t have the “regular” Sunday School Pageant but the children were invited to go carolling at the Iroma Apartments in Iroquois. Afterwards, they were invited to a pot-luck supper at the Iroquois church with their parents and some of the Iroma tenants. This year for the first time, we had only one Christmas Eve Service for our three congregations and it was held in Brinston. The music was great, with the participation of members of both Brinston and Hulbert-Valley choirs, and the attendance was good - something new we tried that is worth repeating in years to come.

As I already mentioned, this year has been very busy. We lost a number of good people, and their absence is felt deeply. But also, a lot was accomplished, and new things were tried and tested. Some will be kept, while others will be left behind and something new tried in their place. We celebrated in style together and had to face challenges and changes. The road wasn’t always easy or smooth, and sometimes tension and impatience showed their heads, but as one of our wise women reminded me,

“Be patient dear, in the end, we always come thru.” Thank you all for your patience with me. Without you and God, nothing would be possible. Respectfully submitted, Rev. Valerie Vande Wiele

IMPC Joint Council: Report from the Chair 2016

The Iroquois-Matilda Pastoral Charge Council continues to enjoy a healthy relationship. We met five times in 2016 to oversee the business of the joint Pastoral Charge, ratify the decisions of the Ministry and Personnel and the Sacraments and Worship Committees, and to monitor our financial resources. One of our challenging tasks as the Pastoral Charge Council this year was to vote on several remits from General Council 42. Two of the most important remits were The Three Court Model and Funding the New Model. These have the potential to significantly change the structure and funding of the United Church of Canada. If you have any questions or concerns about these or other topics, please contact one of the members of the council. As 2016 comes to an end, I want to thank the IMPC council members for their presence, participation and guidance. We are very grateful for the dedication and wisdom of those who have recently resigned (Lindsay Wilson, Bill MacDonald, and Cindy Peters), and wish them well. We also offer our thanks to Darlene Fawcett who served out her term as Secretary of IMPC. Our current roster includes several new faces. We welcomed Pam Mullin as our new Central Treasurer in June 2016, Steve Wilson as Iroquois Treasurer, and June Merkley as Secretary of the IMPC (with Steve filling in when she is not available). Marja Smellink will join us in the new year as the Treasurer from Brinston. We look forward to a productive and prosperous 2017. Respectfully Submitted, Terrie Chedore, Chair of the IMPC

Ministry and Personnel 2016 The Ministry and Personnel Committee is a committee to provide a confidential setting for consultation, support and assessment of all staff in the church such as Minister and Secretary. This year the committee consisted of Bea Wigney as Chair, Karen McDermott, Marja Smellink, Anne Parry, John Marston and Andrew Droppo who has retired from the position. Andrew was a valued member of this committee and we thank him for his time. We will be welcoming Carole McDermott to our group for 2017. This year we held 4 regular meeting and 2 follow-up meetings. Bea also attended the regular Council meeting as chair from this committee. Brenda Bradley continues to be our church secretary for IMPC and is doing a wonderful job. Her day of work for the church has switched from Fridays to Thursdays. The position of Treasurer for IMPC was been taken over by Pamela Mullin. It is this Committee's responsibility to address any or all concerns related to our church life and any congregation member is free to contact any member of the committee with questions and/ or concerns. Respectfully Submitted, Bea Wigney

IMPC Administrative Assistant’s Report 2016

It’s been my privilege to participate in the work of the IMPC for a little over two years now.

During 2016 I produced the Sunday Worship and Work of the Church bulletins, along with occasional bulletins for baptisms and funerals. Every week, as I format and fold, I have the pleasure of reading the inspiring liturgies IMPC folk will encounter the following Sunday: this is a definite perk of the job!

My duties include relaying or responding to communication from the public and congregants, maintaining office equipment and supplies, running local and off-site data backups, occasionally showing a visitor the church, and periodically trying to even up the score with persnickety copiers and software. (Eventually they lose: I’m a fierce competitor.)

Among the notable projects this year was a clean out and reorganization of the office so that it better represented the combined points of the charge. In addition, thanks to Rev. Val and Robert Thompson, a long-term squabble between voice and internet telephone connections has been fixed.

With the newly-stable internet connection, the next objective is to improve data security. I aim to extend the current Gmail pathway to a Bell server, with a setting to automatically empty web storage after being downloaded to Outlook on the office laptop. The Gmail address you use to communicate with the office will not change: but its role will shift from long-term to short-term storage.

Gmail was a new application for me when I first started at IMPC, and while I appreciated its speed of setup in my first weeks with the laptop, Outlook is more efficient for creating and maintaining a coherent file structure. Improving that structure will be the objective after data security has been addressed.

I have also performed work billed exclusively to the Iroquois point of the charge. For example, I have taken minutes at council meetings, kept donation ledgers and produced receipts for CRA, brought the Presbytery minute binder up to standard, produced mailing labels, and received the occasional tradesperson. In addition, under the separate budget of the Cemetery Committee, I have produced mailing labels for the annual Memorial service, and a database of plot purchases, burials, and interments.

I’d like to thank all of you for welcoming me at services, potlucks, concerts, and workshops. The way you’ve made me feel a part of your community is very much appreciated. Brenda Bradley

Page 11 under the Presbytery report: the General Council 43 should read General Council 42.

Work with the Joint Pastoral Charge continued this year with joint services and events. Steve presented the survey regarding the times of Worship. The survey will be used to decide if changes should be made to the times and locations of worship.

Terrie Chedore discussed business from the Joint Pastoral Charge.

We need to extend the term of office for the Chair of the Joint Charge to 2 years, and the secretary for 1 year, effective January 2016. The term for the treasurer will remain at 3 years. Pat Holder moved, second by Bill MacDonald to amend the constitution as described. Carried.

Motions passed by the joint council were reviewed for all to understand.

Term of Central Charge Treasurer to be changed from June for 3 years to create an overlap for learning.

One Christmas Eve service will be held jointly in the same church along with the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s and will rotate Christmas Eve, Sunday after Christmas, Easter, and end of year (June). Easter in Iroquois, June in Brinston, Christmas Eve and Sunday after will be at Hulbert Valley.

Education report, page 18, submitted by Margaret Swerdfeger, was accepted. Ann Banford mentioned that the Sunday school bank balance was $384.55. M&P Report submitted by John Marston and Anne Perry. Men’s breakfast report on page 19 – going to Dixon’s corners February 7, 2016. Card convenor report, page 20, was accepted. Birthday cards are issued to those of an age deserving of such. Ask card convenor what the age limit is. Manse report on page 20. Property report presented by Robert Thompson: light fixtures along the side of the sanctuary and down in the gym should be replaced. Cemetery Report on page 22: Robert reported that Connie will remain as Secretary Treasurer of the Cemetery Board. Bill MacDonald raised the issue of the role of Iroquois United Church Treasurer. He will not attend meetings in 2016 and will continue to support Brenda who will do more if we ask her to. There was a discussion about where the Treasurer should come from: either the congregation or from the community and are we obligated to have a church member be the treasurer. Cheque signing authority and bookkeeping can be a distinction of duties. Moved by Doug Merkley that we are unable to find a person from the congregation to be the Treasurer and if we are not successful we will hire someone from the community. Seconded by Coleen Holder. Carried. Terrie mentioned that the list of committee members for Matilda found on the back page of the annual report is the model Iroquois United should follow. June Merkley accepted to be a member of the Sacraments and Worship committee, moved by Lindsay, seconded by Ann Banford. Carried. Moved by Anne Parry, seconded by Terrie Chedore, that we accept the current Chairs and committee members as members of the Church Council. Carried. Sandie would like to find a Social Committee Chairperson and will pursue this at the March council meeting. Moved by June and Ann Banford to adjourn.

Iroquois UC Board Chair 2016

As 2016 draws to a close, I look forward to the year ahead. Our congregation continues to enjoy our relationship with Brinston and Hulbert. We are truly blessed to share Rev. Valerie as our minister and spiritual guide. Her sermons are inspiring and meaningful. At Iroquois United, we welcome Jason Barkey as our new custodian. We thank Lyle Levere for his years of service and wish him a healthy and happy retirement. We also thank Brenda for her attention to detail. She makes the office a very pleasant place to visit and work. Steve has done an amazing job as treasurer, taking over from Bill. Last, but certainly not least, is our organist and musical leader, Margaret. Words are not enough to describe how fortunate we are to have her as part of our team. I would also like to thank Lindsay for chairing the social committee. Each and every member is to be commended for their efforts. We are fortunate to have dedicated council members who make decisions on our behalf. Iroquois United Church is a great place to worship. Yours in faith, Sandie Decker

Seaway Valley Presbytery 2016

In 2016, the Seaway Valley Presbytery continued to focus on the 8 remits put forth

by the General Council meeting (GC42) in Newfoundland in August 2015. These remits

have the potential to dramatically change the structure of the UCC. Voting by the

various levels of the church court will be completed by June 2017. For more information

please speak to a member of the IMPC Council or check the United Church of Canada

website, GC42 Remits at http://www.gc42.ca/remits

As your representative, I serve on the Partners in Mission Committee. In 2016, with

the support of SVP, we took on the challenge of raising funds to support the Ghusn

family of four from Syria. The refugee family arrived in Ottawa on New Year’s Day, 2016.

They were housed in Cornwall and supported during 2016 through your most generous

donations. The family has been learning English, embracing the changing weather

patterns, and learning new customs. The children are doing very well in school. The

parents are preparing to get their driver’s licenses, upgrading their skills and actively

seeking work. They will remain in their current apartment until the end of June. Our

financial obligation to the family ends on Dec. 31, 2016. Our prayers for them continue.

Well done, good and faithful servants!

The House of Lazarus, our Presbytery supported mission, under the direction of

Executive Director, Cathy Ashby, celebrated its 30th year in operation. The House of

Lazarus continues to serve a client base of more than 300 families made up of roughly

496 adults and 335 children. Their Linking Hands Project has been very successful in

making good connections with community organizations and the general public. We

praise the staff, the Board and the volunteers for the good work.

Rideau Hill Camp had a very good year. Thanks to their strong leadership, many

renovations were completed included a canoe house. More than 400 children attended

summer camp, and almost 1200 adults participated in other functions at the site. The

camp continues to be a valuable resource in our region.

Respectfully Submitted, Terrie Chedore Presbytery Representative for Iroquois United Church

Iroquois UC Sacraments & Worship 2016

Our last Communion was on December 14th. Thanks to all who helped during the year. Thanks to June Merkley for her help. Our sanctuary has been well decorated over the year, thanks to Ann Banford. Rev. Valérie’s leadership is much appreciated.

Christmas Eve Service was shared with Brinston and Hulbert Valley congregations, and it was nice to be involved with our Brinston and Hulbert Valley neighbours. It made Christmas more memorable.

The poinsettias were well received this year.

Hoping for a great 2017, Respectfully submitted,

Carol Thompson

Iroquois UC Education 2016 I would like to begin by thanking all those people who have volunteered their time to help out with our Sunday School. Without you, we would not exist, so your assistance is greatly appreciated. We are continuing with the same format that we have used the past few years. We take turns teaching monthly, with each volunteer responsible for 2 months each year. We are all very flexible and help each other, if a scheduling problem arises. The past two years, we have been very fortunate to borrow curriculum from Brinston Sunday School, thus reducing our expenses. A huge thank you goes out to Tammy Henderson for lending us their material. This December, due to so many of our Sunday School students playing hockey, we could not coordinate scheduling to allow us to practise for our combined Christmas pageant. Instead, we gathered at the Iroma Senior Apartments for carolling. We were very well received by the residents, and several accepted our invitation to join us at our pot luck supper following the carolling. Those involved, felt that it was a very rewarding replacement for our usual pageant. We will continue to have Sunday School during Church services. All children are welcome. Please spread the word. Iroquois UC Ministry & Personnel 2016 On behalf of the Iroquois United Church, we wish to thank our dedicated staff for their excellent work. Margaret Whisselle, our organist and choir director has shared with us her joy of music during each service. Brenda Bradley is settling into her position as secretary as she carries out her job so very thoroughly and professionally. Lyle Levere has been with Iroquois United Church working as our Caretaker for 4 years or so. He will be taking on retirement as of January 1, 2017. Thank you Lyle for all you have done to keep the church tidy and welcoming and we wish you a happy retirement. Jason Barkey has accepted the position of caretaker as of January 1, 2017. He is very familiar with our church and we look forward to working with Jason. Our Minister, Valérie Vande Wiele continues to inspire and lead us during her worship services each week along with our other church families. Thank you to all our Church staff for another great year! Respectfully, John Marston Anne Parry ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ

Fortunately, we have had a year without any major repair issues in the manse. The garage door spring and cable was replaced quickly in November by Seaway Doors. The over-the-range microwave has stopped working and we are preparing to remove and replace it with a new microwave in the New Year. Sincerely, Phil Parry Bill Chedore

Iroquois UC Social Committee 2016 Early in 2016, the need for a Social Committee was identified. A group of concerned individuals met to discuss how this new committee would be formed and what their mandate would be. From these early discussions, we concluded that we needed to take our direction from the church membership. So we conducted a survey of the membership to learn about their preferences for social events and their interest in participating in the planning and execution of those events. A Social Committee comprised of 10 members was formed and this committee is now represented on the Iroquois United Church Council. The Social Committee became active in May 2016, and since then we have developed a social calendar for the 2016/2017 church year. We have revisited some favourite events from the past, made some revisions to our current event repertoire, and added two entirely new events that were suggested by members during the survey. As of Dec 31/2016, we are halfway through our social calendar and the events we have completed so far have generated $4580.00 of income for our church. We are hopeful that we can surpass this achievement with the second half of the social calendar. Your Social Committee has worked very hard to streamline event planning through the development of a funeral on-call team, event planning guidelines and volunteer lists. Our objective is to make the role of event leadership easier, to encourage the participation of the membership in ways they enjoy, to engage our community, and to create the environment where new ideas for social events can be brought forward and realized. I would like to invite you to provide constructive feedback to members of your Social Committee, concerning the church events you have attended in 2016. We are counting on you to provide us with guidance to help create an experience of community that you value and enjoy. Your ideas for new social events within the church are most welcome. We look forward to hearing from you. Your Social Committee Members are: Ann Banford Janis VanDodeward Pam Mullin Cathy Marsden Christine Baldwin Anne Parry Donna Swank Norma Smith June Merkley Lindsay Wilson (Council Representative) Best Regards, Lindsay Wilson

Iroquois UC Property Review 2016 During the Spring yard cleanup, we had a lot of loose tree limbs to be dealt with: my thanks to Don Fetterly for his help with some chain saw work.

Over the choir loft there are some bulbs that have blown out which were earlier replaced, particularly on the north side; these bulbs will be replaced again by LED lights.

With the help of Dennis Barton, Steve Wilson, and a forty foot ladder, we repaired the water leak around one window on the south side outside of the sanctuary.

A new motor was replaced for the boilers in the furnace room by Toshack, at a cost of $1171.00, in March of 2016. Toshack has the contract to look after the boilers, at a cost of $383.44 quarterly. This fall the boilers were started up and are running okay.

Toshack will also be repairing a vent in the Manse, and will contact Rev. Val to be available to let them in.

This past summer the organ needed a fan motor replaced; the work was performed by Sylvain Brisson Organs of Embrun, at a cost of $1299.50. Brisson has the contract to look after the organ, which is checked and tuned twice each year.

Our elevator is under contract with Upper Canada Elevators from Ottawa, and is checked out quarterly at a cost of $210.00 each time. This summer we had to replace a new transformer, for a labour charge of $331.00. Later this fall we had to replace lights and a fuse box, for a cost of $125.00. The above repairs are not covered under our contract.

Mr. Kyle Swerdfeger has offered his service as our snow removal contractor, with our thanks. He cleans both the church yard and the Manse driveway.

Our thanks to Kevin Brown who has been doing an excellent job in keeping our lawns well groomed. Our cost for the year was $621.50, representing 11 cuttings at $50 per cut plus GST.

We would like to offer our appreciation and thanks to Lyle Levere for his great work as our custodian: he will be missed. His replacement is Mr. Jason Barkey, and we welcome Jason and look forward to working with him when he takes over January 1st, 2017.

Finally, my thanks to all who assist in keeping our church operational. Respectfully submitted,

Robert Thompson

Minutes of The Annual Meeting of Matilda Pastoral Charge

February 14, 2016

Carried. A motion was made by Louella Smail/seconded by Christine Hartle that we adopt the Annual Report as one whole report. Carried. Rev. Valerie Vande Wiele opened the meeting with prayer. Richard extended our thanks to Brenda Bradley for a job well done in compiling the Annual Report. The Annual Report was reviewed by individual reports with concerns and comments on the following. Minutes of the Annual meeting held February 8, 2015 – read by Darlene Fawcett. A motion was made by Marlene Lewis/seconded by Cindy Peters to accept the minutes as read. Carried.

Business arising from the minutes a)Carole McDermott asked that Barry McDermott’s wife be corrected to read as Kayla McDermott. b)Diane Wilson would like to see Ben and Meghan MacPherson’s son’s name to show on the record as Jacob Dwight and last name should be spelled MacPherson. c)John Wilson expressed concern that the Christmas Eve collection went to House of Lazarus again this year when he thought it was to go to the Sunday School. He also felt it was inappropriate to have a collection on Christmas Eve or Good Friday. Cindy Peters advised it had been discussed earlier to give the donations to the House of Lazarus. Going forward, Sacrament and Worship will discuss at the next meeting on whether or not to have a collection and if so, where it is to be designated. Richard asked if Matilda Hall had been booked for the 2016 events – Spring Fling, Craft Fair and Anniversary supper. Both committees confirmed dates were booked.

Minister’s Report – Doreen Henderson mentioned that Valerie had had a busy year and the congregation appreciated all her hard work.

IMPC Joint Council Report – no comment.

IMPC Central Treasurer Report – Bea Wigney advised that a member of the Iroquois congregation has come forward to volunteer for the position of Central Treasurer and an interview was pending.

Ministry & Personnel Report – Member of M&P, Andrew Droppo, requested an addendum be added to the M&P report.

Motion by Marja Smellink/seconded by Cindy Peters that the proposed addendum be included in the Annual Report. Carried.

Seaway Valley Presbytery Report – Valerie would like to see someone from Matilda come forward to volunteer as their representative at SVP.

Sacrament & Worship Report – Andrew thanked other members for helping to compile this year’s report.

Brinston Financial Report – John Wilson requested the font for the financial reports be made larger so it is more legible. It was agreed to discuss this with Brenda Bradley for future reports. Doreen Henderson asked where the Wellness Day income showed and Cindy replied it was part of the income for the Social Committee. Carole McDermott wondered where the Spring Fling income was and Cindy replied it was also included. Doreen asked if the premium for the Insurance policy was being compared with other companies as she noticed Brinston was quite a bit higher than Iroquois. John Wilson stated part of the difference is the two different rating tables for fire protection. Iroquois would be hydrant protected resulting in a lower rate. Cindy also stated the special liability required for the yearly events is also part of the premium.

Brinston Property & Finance Report– Doreen asked if a date had been scheduled for the painting of the sanctuary and Cindy advised not at this time. The repairs were being paid with the funds donated by Gordon & Rita Cooper. Cindy Peters advised the responsibility of Brinston’s caretaker position is being taken to M&P as it may become a paid position. M&P will look at it during a future meeting.

Brinston Social Committee Report – Louella Smail and Richard Gilmer thanked both congregations for the food and services provided for Glen Baldwin and Dwight Gilmer’s funerals. Brinston Craft Fair – Christine Hartle stated the vendor applications had not been sent for the 2016 event but would be shortly. Doreen asked if it would be possible to put the anniversary year on the advertisement. Carole McDermott felt the event was a job well done. Hulbert-Valley Property & Finance Report – no comment. Hulbert-Valley Financial Report – Doreen asked if the money for future repairs was still available and Darlene Fawcett replied the next manse GIC due in June 2016 would be required to complete them. MPC Financial Report – Diane Wilson expressed concern as to why we were still donating $2000 every year for VBS when there were few volunteers or children attending from Matilda. The congregation would like to see more clarification on the expenses and income for VBS and felt a reduction in our donation was necessary due to the circumstances with finances. They would still like to provide some funds as part of an outreach for the community.

Motion by Tammy Mudde/seconded by Marja Smellink that the profit from the Pancake Breakfast continue to go towards VBS and a Sunday service be designated for VBS donations before the end of June. Carried. Sacrament & Worship will discuss this at their next meeting and announce beforehand which Sunday is designated for VBS donations. Mission and Service Fund Report – no comment. Brinston/Hulbert-Valley Choir Report – Richard thanked Gwen & Lois for all their hard work. Hulbert-Valley Sunday School – Brinston Sunday School – Richard thanked Sunday School teachers from Hulbert-Valley and Brinston for a job well done with the children. Nomination Report – Louella advised that Doreen will be working on Brinston’s social committee and if anyone had any questions to see either herself or Doreen. Tammy Mudde asked that her phone # be corrected to 613-577-0050. A motion was made by Bea Wigney/seconded by Louella Smail that the Annual Report be accepted. Carried. New Business – Cindy Peters reviewed a motion brought forward by the IMPC Joint Charge Council to amend the Constitution under Part 2 – Organization for the Term of Office to read as a 2 year term for the Chair and 1 year term for the Secretary beginning January 2016. The Central Treasurer will remain a 3 year term. Motion by Christine Hartle/seconded by Brent Fawcett to accept the change of term for the Joint Chair. Carried.

PART III ····· MATILDA PASTORAL CHARGE Page 32

Cindy reviewed other motions that had been passed by the Joint Council but did not require a congregational vote:

the hiring of a new Central Treasurer but a volunteer from Iroquois had since stepped forward for the position

change the term for the Central Treasurer to end June 30th and not January 1st so it would allow time for the transition and learning curve for the paperwork that needs to be completed during the first 6 months of the year

Joint Annual meeting for all three congregations beginning January 2017

Members expressed their concern on attempting to have an annual meeting with all three congregations and the potential for this to end with a very long meeting. They would like the motion brought back to IMPC Joint Council to review and discuss as Matilda would like to have their own Annual meeting. Motion by Margaret Roberts/seconded by John Wilson for Matilda to continue to hold their own Annual meeting and a Joint IMPC Annual meeting could be held on another date. Carried.

last motion was to hold 4 intergenerational joint services throughout the year.

Valerie asked to continue with the topic and explained that the IMPC Joint council does not have the power to carry this out but can make suggestions for services. It must go to the Sacrament & Worship committee to make decisions on Sunday services which they recently did and resulted in the following: - Easter service will be held in both Matilda and Iroquois - 2nd last Sunday in June will be headed by Hulbert-Valley but held in the Brinston Park with games and a picnic - Christmas Eve will be a joint service for all three congregations to be held in Brinston as well as the Christmas 1 service A Worship Time survey was handed out to the congregation requesting their feedback on worship times a) were they happy with the current schedule; do they have a preference of service time; c) is there an alternative schedule. The congregation filled in the survey & these will be taken back to the Joint Council for their review at their next meeting in April.

Richard Gilmer asked Rev. Valerie to close with prayer.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:07 a.m. ---------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------

Brinston Property & Financial Report 2016 It has been a very productive year with repairs to the Brinston United Church and grounds. In the summer, H & B Contracting put in a retaining wall along the west side of the church and paved the parking lot at a total cost of $25,651.00 The parking space lines were painted by Ronmar Sealing at a cost of $323.91. Both bills were paid using funds from the sale of the manse. Also, this summer, new taps were put on the sinks downstairs and a new tap was put in outside to make it easier to water the flowerbeds during the summer. Morrisburg Plumbing did the work and the final cost was $163.85. They also replaced the water pump and did some plumbing repairs in the kitchen at a cost of $613.82. In the fall, JM Professional Painting painted the interior of the church and the choir loft and it looks wonderful. The final cost of the painting was $5,424.00. Christine Hartle has taken on the job of cleaning the church for up to four hours per month. Thank you to Chris for taking on this task. In 2017 brickwork repair will continue on the pillars and other areas of the church as needed. The committee is also trying to obtain quotes to replace the eaves troughs and downspouts around the exterior of the church. Cindy has tendered her resignation as the Brinston United Church Treasurer and Property and Administration Committee member. To say that she will be missed is quite the understatement. Her dedication and commitment to not only the committee but the church as a whole for many, many years has made her an invaluable asset to our church community. We will miss her but wish her well. On that note, Marlene Lewis, Helen Tupper and myself would like to say thank you to Orville Smyth for joining the property and finance committee and to Marja Smellink for taking on the role of treasurer. In closing, if anyone has any concerns or comments about any ongoing or future repairs to the church, please feel free to speak to any of the members on this committee. Respectfully submitted, Darryl Casselman

Brinston Sunday School 2016 This year has been a fun-filled year with the children. I have had the privilege of teaching the 12 children who regularly attend Sunday School. We have continued to begin our time together by doing attendance and participating in a community circle. I usually write the plan for the hour on the white board so the children can see what’s ahead.

I purchased a new curriculum this year, entitled Deep Blue One Room Sunday School Fall 2016, from Abingdon Press. It comes with a leader’s guide, a reproducible Kids’ book, a resource package and a CD-rom with songs and reproducibles. I also ordered the DVD as an additional resource. The music videos, weekly Bible stories told by the Deep Blue Kids, and each week’s Bible verse using sign language is on the DVD. It is an awesome resource that the kids look forward to seeing.

Each lesson consists of a quick review of what we learned the last time we were together, and then we do a hands-on activity to get our senses in motion. This could be an experiment, a quick craft or a drama. Then we talk about the Bible story followed by the DVD animated story of the lesson by the Deep Blue Kids. We usually recite the Bible verse at this time.

After the DVD, I usually ask questions for understanding and then the kids are sent off to do an activity, a craft, or a game to deepen their understanding. I usually play the DVD songs quietly while the kids are working together. We end our time together with a prayer.

During July and August the Sunday School took a break; however, many children from our charge took part in Vacation Bible School at the Community Christian Reformed Church in Dixons Corners during a week in July.

In September, Sunday School began once again. December saw the end of another year with an outreach sing-song of Christmas Carolling at the Iroma apartments in Iroquois. This activity was followed by a potluck and fellowship with family and friends at the Iroquois United Church.

It has continued to be a struggle to maintain consistency with the lessons and the children when our worship times and places are so varied. However, I want to thank the people of our congregation for your wonderful support of our young people, and the parents and grandparents that bring the children to church each week. Sincerely, Tammy Mudde

Hulbert-Valley Sunday School 2016 It’s been a satisfying year for our Sunday School in 2016, as we have completed the learning of various stories from the Old Testament, which we have been working on over the past two years. The majority of our lessons were read from THE DOUBLEDAY CHILDREN’S BIBLE, while others were carefully selected from Christian websites to serve as a better comprehension for the children. We have also produced art work, and many crafts which included verses from the Bible. It was a pleasure to have a few new visitors participating in our class this year, and I would like to extend an invitation to all of them, and others to take part in our class at any time. I believe our children have enjoyed being a part of Hulbert-Valley Sunday School, and will continue to in 2017 as we will begin to learn stories from the New Testament. Our current balance in the Sunday School account is $160.00. We have been making use of the supplies from our craft cupboard, and therefore have not had the need to purchase anything new. On occasion, I have extra supplies at my home which I am happy to donate and utilize in our class. We have also been thankful to use the abundance of white Bristol board that was donated by Daryll Casselman in 2015. Acts 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Wishing everyone all the best in 2017, Robin Roberts

Hulbert Valley UC Finance & Property Report 2016 Hulbert-Valley joined with Brinston again to hold another successful Spring Fling as well as the Anniversary Supper. Thank you to all the volunteers and organizers for their time and hard work for both events. Matilda participated in the Christmas basket program through the House of Lazarus, providing five families with their Christmas meal and gifts. We were also able to provide two extra turkeys and a small supply of groceries to the House of Lazarus. We would like to thank those who volunteer their time in the cleaning of the church, helping with Sunday School, our choir, and the financial support. The committee continued throughout 2016 with more renovations by using the manse funds with Presbytery’s approval. Jeff McDermott replaced the asphalt roof in the spring. Brent Baird installed new flooring in the kitchen area and a beautiful new front door. Jason McDermott repaired the front steps and placed a preservative coating on the existing concrete. Thank you to all three members for their excellent work. Respectfully submitted, Darlene Fawcett Treasurer, Hulbert-Valley

Matilda Pastoral Charge Joint Choir 2016

On behalf of Gwen and myself, I would like to thank Valerie for her leadership through another year of many ups and downs. She is our constant in good times and bad and we are very grateful for her guidance.

As well, we certainly need to offer our thanks and appreciation to our choir members who diligently show up for practice and to lead the worship on Sundays. We have been happy to join our choirs on certain events and look forward to continuing this in the future.

Again, thanks to everyone involved in the music leadership of both churches. Lois very much appreciates the willingness of Darlene Fawcett and Charlene Gilmer to help out in her absence. Wishing everyone a great 2017 with health and happiness to all! Respectfully submitted, Gwen Bosma and Lois Keyes
