The African Iron Ore Market has seen a boom in the past few years, with hundreds of international mining firms and junior miners alike vying for a portion of the largely untapped sources of iron ore that the continent has to offer. Being a key strategic material for industrialisation, Africa has welcomed this interest and growth with open arms, providing great opportunities for substantial development within the iron ore market, and ensuring new supply chains for decades to come.

However, along with the promising growth forecasts and the potential for a substantial return on investment, there are key challenges for the African Iron Ore marketplace. The large scale infrastructure requirements to get these projects off the ground, a strong need for new sources of finance, and questions over what effect these new iron ore products will have on the international balance of supply and demand make African Iron Ore an important and compelling topic within the global iron ore industry.

Metal Bulletin Events’ African Iron Ore Conference will provide a unique opportunity for the key stakeholders within the iron ore market to convene in Africa and discuss the rapid and exciting developments that are currently taking place across the continent.

International investors, steel mills, miners, infrastructure, logistics and engineering firms are given the opportunity to discuss new products and projects coming out of the African market and what effect these new developments may have on their businesses and the global iron ore marketplace as a whole.

The Khumani iron ore mine - formerly known as the Bruce, King and Mokaning (“BKM”) Project is situated approximately 30km south of the town of Khatu, in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and approximately 65 km north of Beeshoek Mine.

Commissioned in 2008, the flagship Khumani iron ore mine has already produced 34 million tonnes of ore. The mine replaces the older Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine as the main iron ore producer for Assmang Limited and has grown from 8.4 million tonnes a year to 10 million tonnes. Following the completion of the expansion project in June 2012 the mine has now added 16 million tonnes.

Khumani ore mining and processing

The iron ore is mined from a series of open pits, on the Bruce and King properties, by means of conventional drilling, blasting and loading into trucks for hauling to each of the Bruce and King primary and secondary crushing facilities. From there, it is transferred by means of overland conveyor and stockpiled onto blending beds that categorises the material into two categories, on and off grade material, ahead of the Parsons Beneficiation Plant.

Departing from Johannesburg on the morning of 9 November, delegates will take a short flight to the Northern Cape province of South Africa where the mine is located. During their visit to the Khumani Mine delegates will receive an extensive tour of the mine and have the opportunity to get an in depth look at its operations, including the washing and screening plant, and the plants tertiary crushers.

Further information about field trip prices and how to sign up will be available at a later date.
