Bang, Boom: Terrorism as a GameIron Man 3, With Robert Downey Jr.

By MANOHLA DARGISPublished: May 2, 2013

Right before I sawIron Man 3, a publicist implored theseveral

hundred attendees professionals and civilians jammed into a

multiplex box and throbbing with excitement not to reveal any

crucial information about the movie to anyone else. After the final

credits rolled, and I staggered toward the exit, the booms of

explosions still ringing in my ears, I wondered what I could possibly

divulge that would spoilthe pleasure of an innocent ticket buyer.

After all, originality isnt the point of a product like Iron Man 3,

which, despite the needless addition of 3-D and negligible differences

in quips, gadgets, villains and the type of stuff blown up, plays out

much like the first two movies.

And so, once again, Tony Stark a k a

Iron Man a k a Robert Downey Jr.

jokes and poses, wears his superhero

suit and flirts with Pepper Potts

(Gwyneth Paltrow). Stuff blows up, and then more stuff

blows up, because thats what happens when diversions like

this hit movie screens around this time of year: chaos

reigns, and then some guy cleans it up.

The only significant difference between Iron Man 3 and

others of its type is that it is opening a few weeks after the

Boston Marathonbombings. Its an unhappy coincidencethat might not be worth mentioning if Iron Man 3 didnt

underscore just how thoroughly Sept. 11 and its aftermath

have been colonized by the movies.

    Downey , Robert Jr

    Kingsley, Ben

Shane Black, who wrote the script with Drew Pearce

could not, of course, have known that their carefully

engineered entertainment would open so soon after the

Boston attack. Yet the explosions in the movie, as well as

its plot elements among them the threat of terrorist

violence, homegrown terrorism, American soldiers and

improvised explosive devices made it impossible not to

think about the marathon. When a Los Angeles landmark

is blown up on screen, a twist rendered with the usual

state-of-the-art digital technology, all I could think washow clean it looked without the pools of blood and

    grotesquely severed body parts.

Not that anyone w ants to see that, especially with kids in

the theater. (The movie is rated PG-13.) Iron Man 3 is

conspicuously meant to be escapist entertainment (a

pathetic conceit, given what it says movie people think

about real life or rather the real lives of their customers).

But Mr. Black and his colleagues, like other filmmakers

who use the iconography of Sept. 11 and its aftershocks,

want to have it both ways.

They want to tap into the powerful reactions those eventsinduced, while dodging the complex issues and especially

the political arguments that might turn off ticket buyers.

The result is that in some movies Sept. 11 along with

Afghanistan, Iraq, terrorism, the war on terror and torture

registers as just a device, at once inherently political and

empty, in a filmmakers tool kit.

Iron Man 3 uses that iconography in the extreme, with a terrorist figurehead, the

    Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), made up to look like Osama bin Laden; a televised execution;

Middle East locations; American soldiers; and a complexly choreographed scene of falling

bodies. It all looks and sounds familiar, though this is strictly Marvels world, with its own

    rules and reality.

The story takes place after the events of Marvels The Avengersand a battle for New

York, with Stark talking in a voice-over: We create our own demons. Theres a bunch of

plot, the usual special effects and new faces, including Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen, a

geneticist, and Guy Pearceas Aldrich Killian, a rich guy with one of those mysterioso

organizations that are invariably up to no good.

Thats more or less it, give or take a few explosions. Those are loud and generally less

impressive than Mr. Pearce and especially Mr. Kingsley, who turn in the sort of engaged

performances that Mr. Downey no longer gives in the franchise. The Iron Manfilms

turned Mr. Downey into a huge star, but the role has gradually, maybe inexorably,

swallowed him. He no longer necessarily does and probably isnt asked to do the hard

    work of a real performance.

My h usband and I really enjoyed Iron Man 1 and 2, there wa s wit, some play fulness, wonderful

special effects, and style, w ith good actin g by Downey , Paltrow and others.

This was an aw ful experience, in sharp contra st. The plot was a complete m ess, so ma ny explosions

and the evil cha racter really didn't make any sense, nor any idea where th e huge wealth came from

to wreak such carnage. We figured in the effort to appeal to Chinese culture it was simplest to just

hav e unending explosions and carnage tha n to create a story line tha t sustained the nature of the

recignised, illustrated Dargis' analy sis about how folks like my self, who liv e in Am erica, are

succeptible to being reconditioned by capitalist profiteers, and made to (via facist psychedelia [topara phrase Kubrick]) be dumbed-down about rea lity in fav our of being dazzled by meret ricious

dull and unoriginal, and the direction was mediocre (poor, in fact, regarding the action sequences

wh ich were too bu sy , m ak ing th e ch oreogr aph y diffi cu lt to foll ow [ lik e in Bour ne2 , Qu an tu m an d

DarkKnight1]). I wish Favreau had directed it, for he knows how to direct action sequences

properly). As a fan of the 7 0's Marv el Comics canon, i wa s also annoy ed by the la me rew orking of

elements: a dull, Nitro-reduced-to-TheMoltenMan hybrid; a complete elimination of the true

Mandarin character; a n introducing of AIM but without MODOK which would hav e been a far m ore

entertaining v illian/ menace than what was settled on. The film is being far too overrated by the

plethora of unin spired critics and fans present these day s. In closing, i do wish to disagree w ith

Dargis' (and other s) praise for the DarkKnight films wh ich (wit h th e exception of some of the

element s of the 2nd one) are as dull and uninspired as IronMan3, a nd are guilt y of the same

man ipulation of the m asses that Dargis accurately accuses Disney/ Marvel of in IronMan3.

I completely a gree with t he rev iewer's comm ents on this film in ev ery way . I'm a huge Downey, Jr.

fan, grew up reading Iron Man, and enjoyed the A vengers film, but this film m isses its mark and left

I found the sequences uncomfortable at times, not at all what I wanted from this film.

    Was i t a cart oon or th e rea l t hing?

Critics are paid to dissect films, thus the term criticize; viewers pay to experience them, like the

wor ld outside , a s nec essar ily fla wed wholes. IMO, t he film wor ked a s a w hole . It w as a solid, i fsometimes predictable, genre entertainment with some fairly nuanced darker notes by Downey Jr.

a tr adeoff for th e inev itable crescendo of exploding objects in the last qua rter of the film . Eg, it wa s a

fun cart oon. Interestingly , wh at t he NYT saw as a m ail-in performa nce, other media such as NPR

saw the same performa nce as a significant development of Downey Jr.'s charact er. I agree with t he

    latter.

As fa r a s th e ch oru s her e about v iolen ce, I'm rem inded of an in ter v iew wi th Ta ra nt ino, in wh ich he

v iolen ce, m ore u nset tl ing , t ha n l ar ge st ru ctur es goin g k abloooomb in v iv id com put er colors. Indeed,

perhaps critics should exam ine their own fascination with mining na tional catastrophes rather than

I really don't know why I keep reading these New York Times Rev iews. Alway s pompous, alwa y s

wi th a n at ur e of "I'm sm ar ter th an ev ery one el se th er efore ev ery th ing I wa tc h i s below me". If I

    wa nt ed to list en t o a r ev iew by a h ipste r, I woul d go t o Sta rbu cks.

The film is really a superhero film, m eant to ma ke us escape from our liv es for a couple of hours, by

imm ersing ourselves in a fut uristic w orld full of robots, special effects, and heroes vs. evil , but it 's not

ju st t ha t, an d th e fa ilu re to a ccept, or u nder sta nd t ha t, m ak es th e Ny ti mes Rev iew ers, as u sua l,

    bori ng hi pster s.

The film dealt w ith th e notion of pum ped up Terrorirst puppets made up and empowered by th e

media, and found a way to arm us as adults, but a lso the kids watching this film, to deal with ourown fears, by m aking th e Evil, look ridiculous, just like Harry Potter an d his mates used the

Riddikulus charm to turn the Boggart into something funny . Mandarin is turned into a clown, and

Killian's ma sk is ripped of when t he face of evil is rev ealed. It dealt with the idea of how terrorism,

and terr orist wars are fueled by people who like to control the world today by creat ing these villa ins,

and as Killian said, fueling t he "supply and dema nd" for war on terr or. And lastly Iron Man 3 doesn't

dodge September 11 , it deals with it in a way that most film-makers don't hav e the courage to, by

dealing with the idea that 9 /11 and other terrorist threats are just a made-up war-factory fuel

    engine.

I'm not saying t his was the m ost brilliant film ever w ritten, but it wa sn't just another pop-corn flick.

I would like for once to read in a ny times review, someone liking movies. Every review is written by

    Things Th at Go Boom

I'm nev er been a big fan of "thin gs that go boom" and "Oh, we're 10 m inut es into the movie: tim e for

    another series of film explosions."

Because tha t Iron Man 3 is: a thin plot backed by t hings th at "Go Boom

    *Spoiler Aler t!*

What can y ou rea ll y sa y about t he m ovie or a bout it s rev iew?

It's easy t o go after th e curren t Iron Man mov ie's use of terr orism, but th e trut h of the mat ter is that

Iron Man mov ies hav e a problem th at can 't be solv ed.

Iron Man is a franchise that is at least forty y ears old and was written for children and the standard

franchise movie formu la inv olves referencing the original source ma terial and char acters and

updating them for a young adult au dience, before releasing them into the world like children with

    ey es full of hope.

The intractible problem with the Iron Man franch ise is the ma terial it h as to update. The Marvel

Comics superv illain, Th e Mandar in, was originally a Chinese Peasant wh o found ten, ring-like

structures in a crashed alien space-ship, put them on his fingers and found that he could zap things

wi th ten differ ent energ y bea ms, or, as a ch ildh ood frien d of m ine once put it : "bur nin g t hi s, a nd

    freezing that."

His rings and yellow-peril cunning m ade him into a recurring Iron Man enemy .

As h e w as, th e Manda ri n j oins a long list of Mar v el Comi cs Vi llai ns of the sixt ies a nd sev ent ies w hose

understa nd why Iron Man wa s facing red-menace-era Iron Man kn ock-off supervil lains like

Titanium Man, or the Crimson Dyna mo.

Perhaps terrorism is a distasteful subject for use in an action mov ie in today's atm osphere but stu diosare for-profit organizations that exchange experience for cash and international terrorism might not

tackl ing "tough issues" (though "30 Seconds" did refer, lightly at t he end, to injuries). And y ou're

seriously m entioning "worth y of the audience..." in regar ds to cartoon char acter m ovies? By

definition, they are n ot going to tackle tough issues. More serious movies, like "Zero Dark Thir ty " or

"Sav ing Priv ate Ry an" can nev er hope to be the m ega-blockbusters the studios need for their bottom

line. Big studio mov ies, as money generat ing v ehicles, are not disconnected now from th e world, as

    they weren't then. As alway s, money doesn't equal ar t, and v ice-versa.

    Enough about Boston!

The Boston bombings wer e two m isguided kids with IEDs. Honestly , wh at h appened there does NOT

    Pretentious Crap

This review was a load of pretentious rubbish. Most Americans ha ve already forgotten about the

Boston Marath on bombing . Stev en Soderbergh ? What's the point of bringing up his nam e in this

review? Iron Man 3 was enjoyable to watch. It's a m ovie, not the Great American Novel. Judge it for

wh at it is, n ot w ha t Ma gic Mike sa y s it coul d be. ..

    Some Dude Named Steevo, Wisconsin

Wherefore a rt th ou, Iron Man?

The tru e lament is how th is franchise has devolved. The first film wa s a success chiefly because it

took its protagonist's conceited livelih ood and self-deprecatingl y deconstruct ed it by didactically

slapping him down, m ost effectively by confronting him with the v ictims of his own destructive

    we apon ry . A s it tu rn s out , i ts sequ els h av e m eander ed n oisily int o pain t-by -th e-nu mber s exposit ions

of explosiveness, betra y ing th e seeds of potentia l path os tha t wer e once so effectiv e, and could hav e

potentially been exploited (and I mean that in a good way ). As it is, we ha v e just a fine film and, um,

    two forgettable encores. Sigh.

    TishTash, Merrick, NY

    This was a rev iew?

This was more a diatribe aga inst the m ovie industry , full of venom a nd hot wind! And completely

lacking in a ny objectivity . The au thor spends more time talking a bout people talking a bout Iron

Man 3 than actually talking about the movie.

I though t it quite enter tainin g and Downey did a great portray al of someone suffering from PTSD,

someth ing a lot of soldiers hav e to deal wit h constantl y . Yet th at isn't good acting a nd is only

    Downey playing himself?

Some of the parts were over done and play ed too far for comedy , but as an adu lt, I can see where th at

wou ld a ppea l t o a y oun ger cr owd r at her t ha n som eone w ho h as fol lowed Iron Ma n for ov er tw ent y -

    five years.

    Arthur Hansen, Bountiful, Utah

    Consider the T heme

[Mr. Soderbergh said he thought that the country still has post-traum atic stress disorder and t hat

    we ha v en t r eal ly heal ed in an y sort of complet e way an d th at people a re , a s a r esul t, lookin g m ore

    toward escapist entertainm ent.]

I'd argue th at is exactl y t he them e of Iron Man 3, except th at Tony recognizes it and rises abov e it.

*Spoilers* Tony is suffering PTSD from t he ev ents in NY, he looks for escape/seeks solace in the Iron

Man arm or, and rises above th is debilitatin g condition as evidenced when h e enacts Project: Clean

    Slate.

    Ben, AL

Response from a Nearby Galax y

Is ther e any one in the galax y t hat doesnt know Iron Man is opening on Friday ? asks Stephen

    Soderbergh.

    An swer : Yes.

The fact tha t a major movie m aker doesn't realize this neatly explains why audiences hav e such a

hard tim e finding moves even r emotely reflecting "the world in which t he rest of us live."
