The following schedule outlines the most commonly used analytical procedures. Not all methods/analyses are listed in this brochure, so please call us if you would like information on anything not listed.

In recent years IRL has been fortunate to be the leading influence of best practise to Coal CSG exploration in many developing countries. We have done this by providing in country training and analysis to the same exacting standards experienced here in Australia.
IRL provides meaningful, validated analytical data performed in country to Australian Standards, giving clients usable data that meets or exceeds local standards and requirements.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Regular internal proficiency testing, participation of Inter-laboratory, national, and client specific proficiency programs complements ISO 9001 and NATA ISO/IEC 17025 accreditations, ensuring international standards are maintained in the organisation’s procedures, methodology, validation, QA/QC and data handling.
Certified Reference Materials and/or in-house controls, blanks, splits and replicates are analysed with each batch of samples. These quality control results are reported along with the sample values in the final report. Selected samples are also re-analysed to confirm anomalous results. Our Service includes the reporting of all QC data except where more than 10% repeats are considered necessary in cases such as poor reproducibility due to poor sample matrix or unforseen interferences, in which case additional repeats may be performed.
Where the concentration of an element exceeds the capacity of the original method selected, re-analysis will be carried out using a more appropriate technique, unless otherwise requested.
VALIDATION
Validation of data is a critical element of our quality assurance. IRL has developed various tools to validate results before they are released. Results which appear anomalous are retested before they are released to the client. Validation of data starts with sample receipt and continues throughout the process.

Selection of Methods
The intended end use of analytical data is the primary consideration when selecting the most appropriate analytical methods. Due to a wide range of applications, key criteria to be considered include: accuracy and precision, detection limits, expected concentration of the target element(s), sample matrix and budget.
• Sample preparation is a vital stage in the analytical process. Correct preparation procedures allow representative sub-sampling which is the foundation of quality analysis. For ease of selection, packages have been created to cover the most commonly used procedures.
• The choice of sample dissolution procedure - to get a sample into a form amenable to instrumental analysis- is important, and each has its own advantages and limitations. Consideration should be given to whether a partial or complete decomposition is required for each application when choosing between the various digestion techniques.
• The lower and upper limits for each element are shown in most tables and are a guide to the ranges that can be routinely measured, however these may vary in some cases as a result of the sample matrix.
• A selection of analytical packages is offered including a range of multi-element scans and commodity specific suites. The comprehensive multi-element packages incorporate the lowest detection limits that can be analysed. Variations in element suites, instrumentation and detection limits offer more cost effective package options.
• For detecting buried mineralisation, partial leaches on soils are an effective tool. Similarly, plant tissue or groundwater, which can be sampled easily and cheaply, can be analysed in conjunction with, or as an alternative to, conventional media. Orientation surveys are particularly important when using these techniques and it is advisable to discuss your needs with us in advance.
• Other services not detailed below include: Gas Chromatography (Iron trap mass spectrometer, ECD, FID, PID, PFPD, TSD) Liquid Chromatography (Triple-quad mass spectrometer, UV, Refractive index), UV/Vis, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, AA, GF-AA, VG-AA, XRF, Classical Wet Chemistry (UV/Vis, IR, Titrations) and Gravimetric techniques.
• The most common methods offered are listed in this document, however this is not an exhaustive list of services and not all services are available at all locations. We encourage clients to discuss their projects with us to assist with selection of the most appropriate analytical solutions for the particular applications.

Sample PreparationThe production of a homogeneous sub-sample, representative of the material submitted to the laboratory, is the primary purpose of sample preparation. Correct preparation is critical to obtaining meaningful analytical results. The selection of the specific sample preparation procedures will depend on the type and size of the sample, the mineralogy as well as the client’s analytical and budgetary requirements.
Segregation into high and low grade sample preparation areas and utilisation of techniques such as quartz, acid washed sand and compressed air washes between samples reduces the potential for contamination.
Close and ongoing consultation with the laboratory will ensure that optimal sample preparation techniques are employed, maximising the value added in the analytical process.

CRUSHING
Samples with volumes or dimensions exceeding that which the pulverising vessels can accommodate may require crushing and/or splitting prior to pulverising. Crushing may also be required to achieve an optimum particle size to split to a representative sub sample for further particle size reduction.

SPLITTING
Splitting of samples may be done to achieve a more cost effective option in reducing the volume of sample for further particle size reduction steps.
Two types of splitters are used; the riffle splitter sometimes called a Jones Splitter and the Rotary Splitter. It is important to select the correct size splitter for the product being split, and correct technique is also important so that samples are split without introducing bias.

PULVERISING
Pulverising is carried out on crushed or relatively fine products to achieve a fine homogeneous powder. This enables small sub-samples to be taken for analysis that will be representative of the larger coarse sample. For most sample types at least 85% of material will be pulverised to 75μm or less.

SIEVING
Sieving may be performed on unprocessed samples to determine the mass distribution of the various size fractions or, alternatively, on crushed or pulverised products to ascertain the effectiveness of the preparation processes.

Hazardous SamplesHandling of samples containing hazardous material requires special procedures and incurs additional charges. Please ensure that you contact our Laboratory Manager before shipping any hazardous material. Before shipment ensure the sample submission is clearly marked, describing the category of hazard and clearly identify the samples that contain the hazard.

By regulation, all radioactive material must be returned to the client. This will be at the client’s expense.
Sample Storage and FreightAll solid samples (core, assay pulps, bulk pulps and residues) will be stored without charge for 60 days after completion of analysis. After this time all samples will be stored at a daily rate until the client’s written advice regarding return, collection or disposal is received.

FUGITIVE GHG EMISSIONS ANALYSIS AND REPORTING
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007(Act), the Regulations made under that Act and the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination 2008 (the Determination) establishes the legislative framework for a national greenhouse and energy reporting (NGER) system.

Field Gas/Air MonitoringOur qualified technicians are equipped with the latest mobile gas monitoring equipment, giving them the ability to log in “real time” potentially dangerous levels of toxic or flammable gases (NH4, H2S, and O2). Reports are generated at the end of each day so you can see the efficiency of any measures put in place.
The equipment is calibrated by a certified reference gas each day before use for absolute confidence of equipment. A loud audible alarm is sounded immediately after the levels have met or exceeded the set parameters. These parameters can be custom set to suit the situation or environmental conditions.

Precious Metals AnalysisA diverse range of precious metals techniques are available for applications ranging from grassroots exploration, where sub ppb sensitivities are required, to accurate resource estimation and grade control. For gold determination, lead collection fire assay remains the classic method, however aqua regia digestion, accelerated cyanide leach and BLEG are other options that are available for specific purposes. Platinum and palladium can also be detected using some of these methods. The full suite of platinum group elements (PGE) can only be determined by nickel sulphide collection fire assay.
Lead Collection Fire AssayLead collection fire assay remains the method of choice for quantitative gold determination. The fire assay flux mixture has been carefully formulated to optimise precious metal recovery in diverse mineralogical matrices. Difficult sample matrices may necessitate a reduction in the charge weight. Samples submitted for the ppb determination of gold, platinum or palladium is fused in new pots using dedicated equipment.

Screen Fire AssayScreen fire assay is used to quantify the gold content of samples where conventional 50 gram assays are subject to an unacceptable sampling error resulting from coarse gold. The process involves screening a nominal 1kg sample and firing the entire coarse fraction, including the screen cloth. Duplicate assays are carried out on the undersize fraction which is more reproducible due to the smaller gold particle sizes.

Aqua Regia DigestionAqua regia will digest many minerals, however, silicates and refractory minerals will remain largely undigested. Aqua regia is useful for grassroots exploration and as a screening tool. It is a cost effective way to analyse for gold and other elements (multi-element gold packages can be found under the Exploration Geochemistry section). Aqua regia digestions are vacuum filtered prior to diluting to volume to preclude errors resulting from insoluble residues. Lower detection limits are achieved utilising Graphite Furnace AAS. Aqua regia digestions are suitable for exploration purposes only and should not be used for resource analyses. Additional elements can be included from the Exploration Geochemistry section.

Cyanide LeachesCyanide solutions are used to leach gold from large samples providing a useful method for both grassroots exploration and resource work. BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) is usually performed on screened stream sediment samples, providing detection of low level anomalies for regional exploration. High grade leaches utilise the LeachWELL™ accelerant to extract the cyanide extractable gold. This is an indication of what would be recovered in routine metallurgical processes.
LEACHWELL™ ACCELERATED CYANIDE LEACH
Four hour leach using LeachWELL™ tablets. This method is not practicable for clay rich samples and in some cases reduced weights may be used.

Exploration GeochemistryThe advent of sensitive, rapid throughput instrumentation such as ICP-OES and ICP-MS used to complement one another has revolutionised exploration geochemistry in the last two decades. Large multi-element packages with detection limits commensurate with the crustal abundances of the anolytes are available for exploration purposes at affordable prices. Limited AAS and ICP-OES suites are also available to suit the requirements of particular exploration programs. A variety of digests are offered which include multi-purpose aqua regia, two acid and four acid “total” digests along with specialised biogeochemical and partial leach digests specifically for greenfields exploration.

Gold + Multi-Elements by Aqua Regia DigestionAqua regia is a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids which acts as powerful oxidizing agent with the ability to dissolve gold. Most oxide, sulphide and carbonate minerals are digested by aqua regia, however certain refractory minerals and most silicates are only partially decomposed. An aqua regia leach is a very useful exploration tool and an industry standard for many grassroots exploration programs; however it should not be used for resource quality data. Recovery levels vary between elements and sample matrices, with indicative recoveries highlighted on the package tables.
Packages range from basic ICP-OES only suites through to a comprehensive element list utilising both ICP-OES and ICP-MS for ultra-trace levels. The 1g options are primarily a multi-element scanning tool; precious metal results are indicative only and should be interpreted with extreme caution due to the particulate nature of precious metals in some sample types. The 10g and 25g methods offer cost effective options for gold and multi-element suites and are vacuum filtered prior to voluming to preclude errors resulting from insoluble residues. Mercury may report low due to losses of volatile forms primarily during sampling and preparation stages.
An additional charge is applicable for samples containing graphitic or other organic material that require roasting prior to digestion.

Multi-Elements by Four Acid DigestionFour acid digests, with the inclusion of hydrofluoric acid targeting silicates, will decompose almost all mineral species and are referred to as “near-total digestions”. Highly resistant minerals such as zircon, cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, rutile and wolframite will require a fusion digest to ensure complete dissolution. Relative indicative recoveries for each element are highlighted on the package tables. Four acid digests may volatilise some elements. IRL and its partners specialise in the analysis of organic compounds in water and soil using GC and GCMS techniques.
It is important that correct containers are used to transport and store environmental samples, and each sample usually has to be taken in several specially treated containers to allow the anolyte of interest to be stabilised correctly. Please ask for advice on sample collection and stabilisation of samples and can supply the specially treated containers.

Iron sulphide minerals in these soils oxidise when exposed to air, caused by a lowering of the water table or excavation, releasing sulphuric acid and iron into the soils and groundwater. This can result in waterways being adversely affected, killing fish and vegetation and damage to structural infrastructure from development.

General Information
Sample DispatchTo assist with the efficient processing of your samples please email all instructions and any freight information prior to or at the time of dispatch. Sample submissions received without written instructions cannot be processed until adequate written instructions are received from the client.
Significant discrepancies between submission sheets and actual samples received will be reported prior to commencement of the processing. Any minor discrepancies will be noted on the analytical report.
We recommend that all submissions of samples be clearly labelled and packaged in a concise, systematic order and accompanied by accurate and detailed paperwork. To facilitate safe manual handling we would appreciate that samples be packaged in units not exceeding 25kg each. Sample submissions poorly labelled or packaged may incur additional sorting charges. Please “flag” the bag containing the paperwork (COC).
A sample Chain of Custody form is available upon request.
The minimum information required on any Chain of Custody (COC) sheet is:
• Client name
• List or range of sample numbers
• Sample preparation required
• Elements required for analysis
• Methods of analysis preferred
• Result destination(s)
• Electronic data format
• Invoice destination
• Sample storage requirements
• Appropriate warnings if any samples are potentially hazardous
• Indication of any samples that may cause problems during the preparation or analysis. This includes the presence of normally trace elements at higher % levels, visible gold, graphitic shales, etc.
Certain samples may require classification as dangerous goods, for the purpose of transport, processing and storage. Compliance is the client’s responsibility. Please ensure that the samples have been classified, marked and transported in accordance with the requirements of dangerous goods legislation. Your co-operation with sample submissions will eliminate unnecessary delays in turnaround.

Importation of Samples into AustraliaWhen importing mineral samples into Australia from International sources the following document requirements should be followed:-
• Importation of samples that have been obtained from a depth greater than two (2) meters and are clean and free of surface and plant related material can be imported into Australia without requiring quarantine treatment. To comply, goods must be accompanied by a Manufacturers Declaration.
• Importation of all material obtained from the first two (2) meters of the earth surface (surface material), is required to be quarantine heat treated to a core temperature of 160°C for a minimum of two (2) hours. Goods must be accompanied by a Manufacturers Declaration and by a “Permit to Import Quarantine Material”.
Detailed information and document requirements on how to successfully import mineral samples into Australia can be obtained through Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) website www.aqis.gov.au.
Importation of Samples Inter-StateWhen importing mineral samples interstate from within Australia the following document requirements should be followed:
• Importation of samples that have been obtained from a depth greater than 2 meter that are clean and free of surface and plant related material can be imported interstate within Australia without requiring quarantine treatment. Goods must be accompanied by an International Quarantine Declaration only.
• Importation of all soil related material which is classified as all material obtained from the first two (2) meters of the earth surface (surface material), is required to be quarantine heat treated to a core temperature of 121°C for a minimum of two (2) hours. Goods must be accompanied by a Manufacturers Declaration.
