Building a new road to carry oversized oil and gas equipment

When one of the world’s largest oil companies needed to move large equipment from Iraq’s deep

water port of Umm Qasr to oil fi elds in southern Iraq, they turned to Agility, with its experience in

emerging markets and reputation for effi ciently handling challenging cargo. The cargo in this case

was desalters and dehydrators used in the oil refi nery process. Before moving the oversized equip-

ment that measured as wide as 21 meters and weighed more than 60 tons, Agility conducted a road

survey, which revealed the asphalt road on the preferred route was badly damaged. Rather than set-

tle for a less desirable avenue, Agility rebuilt the road at minimal cost, and made it more accessible

by steering clear of bridges and utility poles. These improvements ensured timely deliveries to the

customer and a clear path for future jobs.

Customer Examples

Navigating fragmented infrastructure and ongoing security risks in Iraq

Oil fi eld operations are a challenge in themselves. Add to that the inherent risks of working in a vol-

atile country and you have a high-risk enterprise that leaves no room for chance. Agility’s exper-

tise in Iraq proved invaluable to a major oil company involved in developing the nation’s Halfaya

oil fi elds. End-to-end solutions from Agility included import, customs clearance, HSE compliance,

warehousing and, importantly, a dedicated fl eet of 200 heavy duty transport vehicles to make fi nal

deliveries to the drilling sites. Agility devised shipment routes using multimodal transport between

Kuwait and Iraq’s Umm Qasr port and Basra airport to minimize risk while assuring speedy transit.

A portion of the gear is stored in a Kuwait free zone distribution center. To date, Agility has delivered

more than 25,000 tons of light and heavy equipment with no damage.

Exceeding safety standards while moving oil rigs from Saudi Arabia to Iraq

Agility was tasked to move three 1500-horsepower oil rigs under strict Health Safety Equipment (HSE)

guidelines mandated by the customer to comply with stringent safety regulations set by the oil and

gas industry. To facilitate the move from Al-Khobar in Saudi Arabia to the Majnoon oil fi eld in south-

ern Iraq, a driving distance of about 421 miles/677km, Agility provided 35 dedicated trucks each

with a qualifi ed driver trained in special defensive driving techniques. All of the trucks and cranes

used in the operation were certifi ed safe before being put on the road. For added security, the trucks

were equipped with Agility’s proprietary in-vehicle tracking system that provided constant visibili-

ty along the route. Agility’s comprehensive approach ensured that the highest safety standards were

met as the rigs traveled through Kuwait to Iraq and across the Safwan border.
