Oil refinery chemicals are used for processing and refining of crude oil for production of finished products such as
petroleum, diesel fuel, kerosene, aviation fuel, fuel oils, lubricating oils as well as intermediates and primary
feedstock for petrochemical industry.
Majorly used oil refinery chemicals include merchant hydrogen, refinery catalysts, pH adjuster and corrosion
inhibitor among others. Other oil refinery chemicals include oxidizers, and biocides, demulsifiers, and coagulants
and flocculants.
Merchant Hydrogen: Is when hydrogen is produced as a main product and delivered to industries at locations
other than production site is referred to as merchant hydrogen, whereas hydrogen which is produced as a by-
product of various processes and consumed at the same site is referred to as captive hydrogen. Hydrogen is
majorly used in industries including oil refining, food production, metals treatment, and fertilizer manufacture. In
an oil refinery, hydrogen is majorly utilized for removal of undesired impurities like sulphur and nitrogen in
several processes such as hydrotreating, hydrocracking and isomerization apart from hydrogenation and
dearomatization.

Refinery Catalysts: Catalysts are extensively used in oil refineries for conversion process, that provides
improved product properties (low sulphur content, high octane number etc.) as well as yield. Majorly used
refinery catalysts are consumed for fluidized catalytic cracking, hydroprocessing including hydrotreating and
hydrocracking, catalytic reforming along with isomerization and alkylation.
pH Adjuster: pH adjustment is mandatory for oil and water separation and corrosion control. pH adjusters are
majorly used for water and wastewater treatment in oil refineries, along with other uses like amine neutralization,
desulphurization and chemical oxidation.
Corrosion Inhibitors: Corrosion control is an important practice in an oil refinery owing to the production of
corrosive chemicals like hydrochloric acid and hydrogen sulphide. Corrosion inhibitors are utilized for processes
including acidizing well/stimulation process, mud drilling and desulfonation process. Moreover, organic and
inorganic sediments in pipelines further lead to corrosion. Ammonia is one of the chemicals used to inhibit
corrosion.
Others: The others segment includes refinery chemicals like oxidizers and biocides, demulsifiers, coagulants and
flocculants. Proliferation of various biological and chemical organisms leads to filter blockages, H2S formation,
sludge formation, fuel degradation and under-deposit corrosion which results in the requirement for biocides in
refineries. Demulsifiers are utilized for breaking the formation of water-in-oil emulsion during crude oil
production. Therefore, demulsifiers are used in refining as well as wastewater and wastewater treatment process.
Coagulants and flocculants are further consumed for various processes in oil refineries, aiding in the production of
refined products including transportation fuels like gasoline and diesel.
