What is Te Washington Center?A nonprot educational organization in
Washington, D.C., Te Washington Centerserves colleges and universities that want toextend their curricula to the nations capitaland, increasingly, key cities in other countries.Founded more than 36 years ago, it now has 80sta, some 40 associated aculty, and more than45,000 alumni rom more than 1,000 institutionsin the U.S. and abroad.
What exactly do we provide? In our main internship program, we provide
students o all majors academic semesters andsummer terms centered on tailored internshipsin Washington, D.C.and in a growing seto international locations (currently London,England and Sydney, Australia).*
We also provide academic seminars, typicallyone to two weeks in length as well as customizedaculty-led programs. Every our years weorganize the only national academic programsor college students at the major politicalconventions.
Our Washington, D.C. internshipprogram has three main components
A tailored internship: We maintain tieswith more than 1,000 internship sites ingovernmental, international, business andnonprot organizations. With help rom ourproessional sta, students choose a substantive, supervised internship tailored to their academicand proessional interests and needs.
An academic course:We oer 35 to 50 asemester, in a range o disciplines and inter-disciplinary areas. Students choose one, takenor three hours, one evening a week. Faculty
are highly qualied academics (a course guidewith biographies is available) and are oen alsopractitioners in their eld.
Te Leadership Forum:We enrich studentsinternships and academic study with someremarkable programming not possible orprograms o a smaller scale. For example, at ourAlan K. Simpson-Norman Y. Mineta LeadersSeries, students hear rom and question memberso the cabinet, ambassadors, leading journalists, and CEOs. Our Public Policy Dialogues onCapitol Hill program enables students to meetin smaller groups with Members o Congressor their stas. All students carry out a civicengagement project in an area o personal orproessional concern. o document, analyze, andreect on the internship experience, students alsocomplete an internship portolio.

Te Washington Center shares with Dickinson a commitment to provide a
useul education that combines hands-on experience with a rigorous liberal-
arts academic oundation. When I reiew the internships Dickinson students
hae experienced through WC, I am impressed by the breadth o choices
that are aailable to them. Our students hae used their Washington Center
experiences to sere in the White House, Congress, the U.S. Attorneys Oce,
the Brookings Institution, etc. Tese internships are piotal opportunities or
our students to engage the world as emerging citizen leaders.

Among thousands o others
Since they award their own academic creditor students work, theres no more important
question or our afliated colleges anduniversities. With our nationally representativeLiaison Advisory Board, weve been developingthe answer or over three decadesand the actthat hundreds o institutions award credit orwhat students do speaks to the success and appealo Te Washington Centers approach.
First, some background. Te amount o creditand the type or types o credit colleges anduniversities award are, o course, institutionaldecisions. But generally students receive 12 to 16
hours or a 15-week semester and 6 to 12 or a 10-week quarter or summer term. Some credit maybe in the major, some may be elective or generaleducation credit. Some credits may be graded andsome awarded pass/ail. We are happy to provideguidance as well as examples o credit packagesrom similar institutions.
How, then, can an institution be assured that astudents work with us is credit-worthy? Some othe key assurances:
Admissions standards
We admit only students who are ready or achallenging academic and work experience. All have ofcial approval o a liaison or acultysponsor. Te average GPA o enrolled studentsis over 3.3. Successul applicants join one o themost diverse and motivated peer groups in thecountry.
Te internship
Internships are tailored and substantive and
chosen rom among options generated byproessional sta. Students are supervised byprogram advisors, typically with masters or J.D.degrees and extensive experience in their elds.
Our agreement with our several thousandplacement sitesmost o which are long-timepartnersis that internships will be substantiveand challenging, and that at least 80% o thestudents work will be non-clerical.
Every students Washington Center program
advisor visits the work site to ensure that theuniversitysas well as the students and theorganizationsexpectations are being met; inot, and we cant resolve the problem, we willnd the student a more appropriate placement.
An institutional member o the NationalSociety or Experiential Education (NSEE), TeWashington Center adheres to the principles ogood practice specied by this organization, aswell as the guidelines or internship programs
adopted by the Council or the Advancement oStandards in Higher Education (CAS).
How can institutions be assured that a students work with us isworthy o academic credit?

Te Washington Center gies our students a wonderul academic experience
that they could not obtain anywhere else. It provides them with more o
eerythingbetter internship placements, better housing, and more one-
on-one superisionand at a price that allows us to make this opportunity
aailable to the greatest number o students. Te Centers sta has been
tireless in seeking out additional unds om state governments, oundations
and the priate sector so as to make the experience aordable to all.

institution explaining why the experiencehas been credit-worthy.
Grading o student perormance
Just as colleges and universities provide
their own credit or students satisactorycompletion o our internship program, they determine students grades. TeWashington Center, however, providesthe campus the thorough documentationit needs to make this determination. Tisincludes, in addition to a brie mid-termevaluation, nal evaluations rom thestudents program advisor, site supervisorand course instructor, each o whom alsorecommends a grade. Te students portolio

I tell my students two things: that we hae neer had a dissatisfed customer
and that this type o hands-on knowledge is invaluable. Our Case students
hae had excellent experiences, enlightening internships, fne instruction,
and great opportunities to get close to at least a part o the action in the
political center o the nation. Tey are fred up when they come back to
campus, ready to learn more about how politics works in Washington.
Is housing provided?Yes, it is guaranteed to all accepted students.
Students live in shared, ully-urnished apartments
in our new Residential and Academic Facility

or, when additional apartments are needed, in
careully selected, well-established neighborhoods
in Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. All acilities are easily accessible to

What is the cost? How is it paid?Te program ee (tuition) and housing eeor each upcoming term are available onTe Washington Centers website atwww.twc.edu/program-ees. Te gures given
are sticker prices. Students actual net costsvary greatly as a result o additional aid receivedrom any o several sources, including theirinstitutions, states, internship sites and TeWashington Centers own substantial nancialassistance program. All told, more than 75% oWashington Center students receive some ormo assistance.
Te program ee is set between the averagetuitions o public and private institutionsnationally. Tis enables most private collegesand universities to collect their usual tuition(students remain enrolled on the home campus),pay Te Washington Centers program ee romthe amount collected, and retain the dierenceon campus. Again, we can provide examples oarrangements in place at like institutions.
What are the academic seminarsthat are aailable to students?Academic seminars are intensely programmed
oerings o short duration that draw on theextraordinary resources o Washington, D.C. andcomplement what most institutions provide ontheir campuses. Tey are usually oered or oneor two weeks in January and May. Students atall levels, including recent graduates, are eligibleto participate. Te academic seminars oer anin-depth ocus o study on particular topicsthrough lectures, site visits, tours, briengs, andspecial events. Past topics include Congress and

Every our years our Campaign Series centers onthe presidential nomination and election processand includes signature programs at the national

Te seminars provide incentives or acultyto serve as aculty leaders and to bring groupso students as part o a mini-term, summeror semester add-on course, worthy o one totwo credits per week o study. Te acultydevelopment opportunities are also
considerable. For upcoming seminars pleasevisit ww w.twc.edu/seminars.
