Allama Iqbal is regarded a multifaceted genius of the modern age. Born in 1877 at Sailkote (Lahore) he had a good opportunity to study at the feet of great luminaries of his time like Molvi Mir Hasan and Thomas Arnold at secondary and higher level of education. He excelled in the subjects of Philosophy, Literature and Law. Poetic talent arose in him from his young age which simultaneously got developed to its heights. Iqbal’s journey to Europe in 1905 for higher studies became a turning point in his life that made him not only to train himself in higher academics but also provided an occasion to understand the western culture very closely. After delving deep in both the western and the eastern /Islamic traditions of knowledge, Iqbal evolved his philosophy of human world and the world of nature. It is a unique philosophy of life founded on spiritual bases in a genuine way. This philosophy imbibes the universal values of equality, brotherhood, peace and welfare and inculcates in man a spirituo-rational out look to shape his life and society on eternal principles. Iqbal devoted his whole works in prose, poetry, letters and notes to the pursuit of explaining this unique philosophy of life. Indeed he looked into the issues of humanity from a multiple angels and methods prevalent in the modern times which include religious, historical, legal and artistic specially.

Iqbal wrote a number of poetical works in both Urdu and Persian which are of immense literary value and have impressed stupendously their readers not only in the Indian subcontinent but across the world. By writing such superb poetry, Urdu and Persian literature became very rich both in terms of poetic art and content. His Bal-i-Jabrial, Bang-i-Dira, Zarbi-i-Kalim and Persian works like Asrari-i-Khudi, Rumoz-i- Baikhudi and Javid Namah are special examples of it. Other outstanding work, The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam deals with re-understanding of religious truths and principles of life in the context of modern philosophical and scientific developments. These themes are also treated along with other important religious and social issues in his discourses, speeches and essays which have been compiled in book form under various titles by some later scholars. Similarly his letters (makatib) have been compiled by several academic / publishing centers. All these works of Iqbal depict his distinctive contribution to the various fields of learning (ulum) – philosophy, literature, law, social sciences and scientific thought. Knowledge, its sources and development in various intellectual and religious traditions to guide humanity emerges a special concern in Iqbal. He seems highly original in composing his poetical works with universal values of spiritual and social ethics. In this way Iqbal became a great propounder of spiritual culture, social justice, purposeful art and literature and scientific outlook in the modern age and his influence and inspiration to his people as well as new

generation is of vital significance.
