PV EQUIPMENT DIRECTORY INTERNATIONAL PHOTOVOLTAIC EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATION

ABOUT IPVEAFounded in May 2008, the International Photovoltaic Equipment Association (IPVEA) is an

independent, non-profit organization of manufacturers and suppliers of photovoltaic (PV) fabrication

equipment and related raw materials used in PV ingot, wafer, cell (crystalline and thin-film), and

panel manufacturing. The association’s member companies represent the wide spectrum of

equipment and materials including that related to crystal growth, diffusion furnaces, glavanics,

laminators, laser systems, materials handling, metallization, printing, process integration, solar

simulators, substrate handling, testing, vacuum systems, waste gas abatement, wet chemical

systems, and related materials and professional services.

The overall mission of the association is to provide members with a forum for information,

discussion and exchange of ideas, as well as ways to develop business opportunities and strategic

partnerships. The association is the unified voice of the manufacturing segment of the PV industry.

As such, the association evaluates and recommends exhibitions, conferences, sales channels and

methods of communications that can be effective for its member companies.

The association will pursue its long term-goals in a number of ways, including supporting events

that provide the best opportunities for member companies with booth discounts and association

branding/sponsorship. Part of this will be to reduce the number of key trade shows for members in

particular and the industry in general.

MARKET DATA

Following a few years of explosive growth, the market for equipment used to manufacture PV cells and modules is going through a period of transition before continuing along a more sustainable growth path.

Demand for equipment, spurred on by government subsidies in the end markets, grew 78% and 88% in 2007 and 2008 respectively. However, the collapse in orders for equipment at the beginning of 2009 was a reminder, if any was needed, that photovoltaics would just be an interesting technology serving niche markets if it wasn’t for those subsidies. The sudden and unexpected slowdown in demand in the first few months of this year resulted in the inevitable oversupply of modules and the subsequent price collapse. While this situation is not great news for equipment suppliers - the days of easy money are gone - it does present the industry with some interesting opportunities. In 2007 and 2008 the industry could be characterized as being all about delivery, but now the focus has shifted towards developing technologies to reduce manufacturing costs. This has got to be good news as it brings forward the time when the cost of PV generated electricity reaches parity with that supplied by the grid.

The new reality is that cell and module pricing has fallen to the point where many manufacturers are now unprofitable. It’s unlikely that prices will recover much, if at all, so this means that cell and module manufacturers will have to invest in new technology if they want to stay in the industry. They will also have to retire some of their older unproductive capacity. Indeed, we are already seeing both these effects as manufacturers start to reconfigure their businesses. Based on this analysis, the outlook is for the equipment industry to take a more sustainable trajectory driven by a combination of technology buys and capacity buys as well as some capacity replacement. A growth in demand for cells and modules of around 25% in MWp over the next 5 years should drive a growth rate of 12% in the equipment market in terms of revenues over the same period.

In the meantime, despite a huge drop in orders this year, equipment revenues are expected to grow by 5.0% to reach a value of $5.0Bn in 2009. This is because many companies have been working through the backlog of orders that were placed in 2008, and some companies have been recognizing revenues in 2009 for systems shipped in 2008.
