IP Telephony

Powering profitability

Voice over IP Solutions for Enterprises

In the modern economy, enterprises haveto be clever to succeed.

Businesses must run a tight ship - always investing, yet ensuring that those investments must perform, that

they deliver value. It is in precisely this type of environment that high-performance Internet technologies such

as Voice over IP (VoIP) enable IP Telephony solutions across your business to gain critical competitive advantage.

Building business value

VoIP: Determining yourdirectionEnterprises do not benefit from technology

itself, but from the way that technology

makes a real difference to the bottom line.

Understanding that every business is

different, we have designed our VoIP

solutions with flexibility in mind. No one

knows how to benefit your business better

than you do. That’s why we give you

choices in evolving your network.

Nortel Networks offers two types of

VoIP architecture: pure-IP or evolutionary

IP-enabled. While Pure-IP telephony

networks deliver enhanced VoIP

capabilities across campus environments

and wide area networks, IP-enabled

telephony networks are designed to

supplement the existing capabilities

of digital telephony systems.

Our Pure-IP solutions deliver full-featured

telephony services over high-performance

IP networks that offer all of the

performance features of traditional

PBX-systems, while supporting new

technologies such as distributed call

centres and advanced wireless solutions.

Our Evolutionary IP-enabled solutions

extend VoIP services across the converged

LAN and allow the centralised Meridian

PBX system to extend telephony services

to branch-office and home-office

environments. By building on your

current communications investment, you

can preserve the viability of the existing

PBX or key system, while benefiting from

the innovative features that are only

supported by VoIP.

Unifying traditional, ATM, and IP

telephony, Nortel Networks VoIP

solutions transform existing networks

into economic engines, while creating

profitable new applications. Our range

of flexible options provides you with

the adaptability you need to thrive in

a constantly changing environment.

We understand that you need technology

to work for you – to power your

profitability. And that’s what our VoIP

Solutions for Enterprises are all about.

At the core of IP Telephony is the concept

of network convergence. And network

convergence is all about creating

efficiencies – combining the delivery

of voice, data and multimedia

communication into one transport network.

Voice over IP enables emerging and

established enterprises of all sizes to boost

revenue, reduce costs, enhance customer

service and increase productivity. VoIP

networks remove the need to lease separate

voice lines, making them less expensive

to operate and maintain. Enterprises can

eliminate costly, hard-to-manage overlay

networks by transforming multiple

networks into a single, multi-service

network. And by introducing new services

such as Web-enabled multimedia call

centres, powerful unified messaging

applications, remote management

capability and other eBusiness productivity

tools, you can improve customer service

and employee productivity, while

maximising revenues.

Nortel Networks has the experience, in both telephony and data networking, needed to deliver next-generation

VoIP solutions, and is uniquely positioned to help your business unlock the profit potential of the Internet.

The cross-solution core product: BusinessCommunications ManagerBusiness Communications Manager

enables small- and medium-sized

businesses and branch offices to create

pure-IP networks or evolutionary hybrid

digital/VoIP environments. Offering

powerful PBX capabilities combined

with a fully integrated suite of eBusiness

applications, Business Communications

Manager helps to level the playing field

between smaller and larger competitors.

Data services allow all users to

communicate using e-mail, access

Web sites and share files between remote

Investments need to deliver tangible

benefits: We’ve developed a complete

portfolio of solutions designed to

empower your business, contain costs

and drive profitability, whether you are

deploying a pure-IP solution across a

single site or multiple branches, adding

VoIP capabilities to your existing PBX,

or upgrading your key system to

a digital/VoIP or pure-IP telephony

environment.

locations. IP Virtual Private Networking is

also supported. And Automated Attendant

and Custom Call Routing are standard

features that ensure inbound calls are

always managed effectively, without the

need for a dedicated attendant. With

Business Communications Manager, users

also have access to a wide range of fully

integrated software-based applications.

Business Communications Manager enables:

• Voice-processing applications, including

CallPilot unified messaging solutions that

enable users to manage voice mail, e-mail

and incoming faxes directly from their

Windows-based PC.

• Integrated Multi Media Call Centres

supporting up to 80 active agents, who are

accessible to your customers via telephone

or through the Internet. When used in

conjunction with IP telephones connected

to the data network, agents in multiple

locations can support the same queue.

VoIP cross-section products

Laying the foundation

Computer Telephony Integration (CTI)

allows system users to link their telephones

to TAPI-compliant computer applications.

For example, agents can have full access

to background information on a caller

by using Calling Line ID information

to access their details from a customer

database before the conversation begins.

This functionality can help provide

dramatic improvements in customer service.

• VoIP solutions that can deliver telephone

services between branch offices, enabling

employees to make calls over the existing

WAN infrastructure without incurring

long-distance charges or leased line costs.

Business Communications Manager

supports wireless solutions based on both

Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephony

(DECT) and IEEE 802.11 standards,

helping to increase employee effectiveness

by ensuring they can always be contacted,

wherever they are on the company site.

Business Communications Manager

systems can be networked together or

to other PBX products using traditional

ISDN voice networking solutions. They

can also be networked to Nortel Networks

IP-enabled Meridian 1 system, or

Succession Communication Server for

Enterprise 1000 systems using Nortel

Networks Meridian Customer Defined

Networking (MCDN) networking

protocols over the IP network.

Cross-solution productsNortel Networks VoIP solutions for

enterprises share a common set of software

applications and hardware accessories

designed to maximise the performance

of your network.

access into a single point-and-click

interface on multimedia Windows PCs,

and supports leading e-mail clients.

skilled personnel at a central site to

manage the entire telephony network from

a single location, dramatically reducing

your administrative expenses.

Computer Telephony Integration (CTI)

products such as Nortel Networks

Symposium, this software-based solution

provides unified voice mail/e-mail/fax

messaging services and offers the same

services and capabilities as the i2004

Internet Telephone.

While VoIP is the way forward for

Enterprise networks, Nortel Networks

respects that only you know how and

when your network should evolve. That’s

why we have designed our VoIP solutions

to keep you in charge of your network

evolution strategy. As voice and data

networks converge, you can choose from

our broad portfolio of products that

provide solutions all the way to the

edge of the network.

Nortel Networks IP-enabled Solutions for Enterprises maximise the performance and efficiency of your

existing network with VoIP. With an IP-enabled solution from Nortel Networks, you can preserve the viability

of your existing PBX or key system investment, while delivering innovative features and powerful advantages

that are only supported by VoIP to main and branch offices.

Succession Internet EnabledSolutions for MeridianNortel Networks offers a smooth migration

path to a converged digital/VoIP

environment for businesses that have

a Meridian 1 or Meridian SL-100

communication system. Succession

Internet Enabled Solutions for Meridian

deliver line-side VoIP capabilities to

traditional PBX installations, as well

as extending trunk-side PBX and remote-

service VoIP capabilities over high-

performance IP links. The Succession

Internet Enabled Solutions for Meridian

include the following innovative products:

Line-Side Gateway

The Internet Telephony Gateway line

card brings the power of VoIP to your

Meridian 1 installation, allowing

employees to use the i2004 Internet

Telephone, i2050 Software Phone, or

wireless VoIP devices. The card packetises

and compresses voice signals for

transmission over the IP data network

and provides support for up to 96 VoIP

stations. Using industry-standard G.711

and G.729 compression and DiffServ

Quality of Service (QoS) ensures clear

voice transmissions.

IP-enabled Solutions for Enterprises

Choosing to evolve

Trunk-Side Gateway

The Internet Telephony Gateway trunk

card enables your company to use

cost-effective IP bandwidth between

Meridian switches, replacing more

expensive PSTN connections or dedicated

leased lines for voice. Routes can also be

established between Meridian switches

and other Nortel Networks VoIP-capable

systems, such as the Succession

Communication Server for Enterprise

1000 or Business Communications

Manager. Your Meridian investment is

completely protected because Meridian

users will continue to use their existing

telephones and applications, eliminating

the need for costly hardware replacements.

Packetising voice and fax traffic and

routing it over the corporate intranet

reduces costs through trunk consolidation

and toll bypass, leading to a quick return

on investment. Clear telephony signals

are ensured by the Meridian Internet

Telephony Gateway’s QoS monitoring

capabilities.

Wireless IP Gateway

The 802.11 Wireless Gateway adds

support for VoIP solutions such as wireless

headsets. By supplying employees with

these advanced wireless solutions, your

company can dramatically improve

workforce efficiency.

Remote Office Solutions

For IP connectivity to smaller remote

sites, users can select the Nortel Networks

Remote Office 9150, Remote Office 9110

and Remote Office 9115 solutions. These

units leverage your Meridian 1 investment

by extending service over cost-effective IP

links to Nortel Networks Meridian digital

telephones located at home or branch

offices, with survivability for branch

offices built in.

Option 11C Survivable IP Expansion

Companies who have the smaller

Meridian 1 Option 11C and Option 11C

Mini PBX can use this innovative solution

to increase the resilience of their

communications system. The Option

11C Expansion cabinets can be added

to a corporate LAN, and VoIP services

established between the main and

expansion cabinets. In addition to

the many benefits offered by VoIP,

the Expansion cabinet becomes an

independent, fully survivable system

that is capable of accessing the public

network directly, even if it’s unable

to access the main switch.

Together, these products deliver a

comprehensive solution for providing

IP-enabled solutions. The net result is

a smooth migration path to the benefits

offered by VoIP – leaving you free

to migrate to the new architecture at

your own pace, without compromising

prior investments or existing business

practices.

Picking a new path

Pure-IP solutions based on the Succession

Communication Server for Enterprise

1000 offer numerous benefits:

• Consolidates voice and data traffic onto

a single cabling infrastructure, reducing

costs by eliminating the need for a

separate cabling system for the telephony

network.

• Centralises telephony services at main

office and extends those services over a

converged network to home offices,

branch offices and telecommuters. A

central H323 gatekeeper (the Signaling

Server) maintains a centralised dialling

plan for all sites and OTM provides a

centralised management solution

• Simplifies moves, adds and changes by

supporting Dynamic Host Configuration

Protocol (DHCP)-enabled IP telephones,

portability using i2050s and hot desking

using virtual office network wide feature.

• Extends distributed call centres to multiple

sites, enabling calls to be seamlessly routed

to agents at branch or home offices.

This approach balances workloads and

can improve customer service.

• Advanced IP-based call centre applications

enable customers to interact with agents

over the Web, posing questions in chat

windows or requesting a return phone call

by simply clicking a “Call Me” button.

• Enables Nortel Networks Access Points

to be easily deployed at any location on

the network, providing support for 802.11

wireless devices.

Enterprises can eliminate costly, hard-to-

manage overlay networks, by transforming

multiple networks into a single, multi-

service network with a communications

server at its centre and Web-based network

management.

Extending an integrated solution across

the network reduces costs and increases

employee effectiveness, eliminating the

need to deploy, maintain and manage

disparate systems.

Nortel Networks Pure-IP Solutions

allow enterprises to merge the standards,

simplicity and connectivity of the Internet

with the reliability, quality and capacity of

classic telephony networks. They support

powerful new eBusiness applications,

extend network services to remote

workers, increase portability and simplify

the network infrastructure. Designed
