    Physical Properties

General DescriptionThe THINERGY MEC220 is a solid-state, flexible, rechargeable, thin-film Micro-Energy Cell (MEC). Thisunique device substantially outperforms all other small formfactor electrochemical energy storage technologies, includ-ing supercapacitors, printed batteries, and other thin-filmbatteries. The device is fabricated on a metal foil substrateto achieve its flexibility, thin profile, broad operating temper-ature range, and long life.

The MEC is offered in a unique, patented package designthat maximizes the active area of the cell and minimizes thedevice footprint to deliver the highest energy and powerdensity of any energy storage element of its size. Externalterminals in the form of positive and negative nickel-platedtabs are located along the top edge of the cell for easy sol-dering to printed circuit boards (PCBs). The tabs aresupported with a flex circuit for added strength and to keepthem planar with the r igid or flex PCBs. Through-holes

located in the terminal contacts allow the MECs to bealigned on solder posts for easy connection and cell stack-ing to create battery modules with higher capacity andcurrent. These tabs also allow easy connection to both ter-minals from either side of the cell, which is important duringautomated assembly onto flex circuits and PCBs. The con-ductive metal tabs allow various connection methodsincluding epoxies, anisotropic conductive film (ACF) materi-als, and solder. The cells can be oriented to stack in series

(to multiply voltage) or in parallel (to multiply capacity andpower).

The active materials in the device include a Lithium CobaltOxide (LiCoO2) cathode and a Li-metal anode. A solid-stateelectrolyte called LiPON (Lithium Phosphorus Oxynitride)with its high Li-ion conductivity, is used to provide superiopower performance. The extremely low electron conductivity within LiPON results in ultra-low self discharge, making

this technology ideal for applications where energy must bereliably stored for many years without the ability torecharge, or for low-power ambient energy harvestingcharging solutions. In addition, this eco-friendly technologycontains no toxic chemicals or heavy metals, providingindustry-leading safety with absolutely no possibility forchemical leakage, thermal runaway or fire, as experiencedwith other Li-ion batteries using liquid or gel electrolytes. A

proprietary flex-circuit encapsulation methodology is usedto achieve the ultra-thin and flexible form factor and toensure reliability and performance under harsh environ-mental conditions, far exceeding other micro-energystorage technologies.

The thin form factor, rechargeability, and high dischargerate capability enable applications where conventionalcoin/button or primary thin batteries are not well suited. Dueto its low internal cell resistance, the MEC offers superiorcharge acceptance, making it an ideal energy storagedevice for applications where extremely low currentrecharge sources are available, including various ambientenergy harvesting methods. Pulsed or continuous currentsas low as 1 A can be used to effectively recharge thisdevice. The MEC recharges in seconds to minutes, depend-ing on its state of discharge and available charge current.MECs can be recharged using constant current, constantvoltage, pulsed current, or pulsed voltage sources. Anycharge voltage greater than cell voltage (not to exceed themaximum specified recharge voltage) will result in charging.A variety of charging methods can be used, such as directconnection to a power supply, wireless recharge via induc-tive coupling, or energy scavenging solutions that harvestkinetic, solar, RF, magnetic, or thermal energy.

The low self-discharge rate results in decades of shelf life. With its recharge cycle stability, the device offers tens ofthousands of recharge cycles for many years of use with no

memory effects. The MEC220 provides an extremely safe, reliable, and low-cost energy storage solution that outper-forms any other micro-battery or capacitor solution. Thiscomponent class device is intended to be designed in forthe life of the product.

    THINERGYMEC220: Solid-State, Flexible, Rechargeable Thin-Film Micro-Energy Cel

    Shelf Life and Self-Discharge Characteristics

Typical energy storage devices such as batteries andsuper capacitors exhibit self discharge behavior that pre-vents them from being used in many applications wherethe stored energy must be retained for periods in excess often years or more. Temperature changes that occur in typ-ical applications also have a strong effect on the self-

discharge rates of these devices, normally resulting inmuch higher self -discharge rates as temperatureincreases. Traditional energy storage devices that haveacceptable self-discharge rates at room temperature caneasily become unsuitable at elevated temperatures due toelevated self-discharge rates. In contrast, IPS MEC tech-nology consistently demonstrates world leading self-discharge behavior, allowing MECs to be used in place oftraditional energy storage devices in applications wheredecades of use without maintenance are required.

MECs have a distinct advantage over traditional energystorage devices in that they possess a solid state electrolyte. This solid state electrochemical system prevents thehigh self-discharge rates and premature device failuresfound in other electrochemical systems using liquidelectrolytes.

Shelf life will be determined by the condition of the energystorage device as the open circuit voltage (OCV)decreases over time in the application environmentDevice or application failure occurs when the cell voltagedrops below the useable cutoff voltage of the applicationor when the residual capacity at a given voltage level is nolonger sufficient to perform a task demanded by the appli-cation without recharge being supplied.

Figure 7 shows the typical MEC state of charge as a function of the open circuit voltage. Note that a great deal ofMEC capacity is reserved between 3.9 and 4.0V.

    Self-Discharge Performance

In applications where no external load is applied to theMEC, it will experience self-discharge exhibited by anobservable decrease in the OCV that is measured on thecell. Figure 8 shows a typical self-discharge curve gener-

ated from MEC test data over one year of self-dischargeat 25C. The self-discharge rate increases with temperature, but remains lower than any other energy storagedevice.

Figure 9 shows an extrapolated ten year self-dischargecurve. Extrapolation is used since no known failure mech-anism has been identified in MECs that would cause thedischarge curve to deviate from observed normal dis-charge behavior. As noted previously, the MEC capacity is

largely reserved in the voltage region between 3.9 and4.0V. This demonstrates that the MEC capacity has beenreduced by only a fraction, even after ten years of storageat room temperature. Figure 10 shows the extrapolatedremaining MEC capacity after 10 years of storage time.
