Richard D. Parsons
Chairman
Time Warner’s President,Richard D. Parsons spoke withChet Cooper about theirnationwide volunteerismprogram and how thecompany encourages as wellas rewards communityinvolvement, stressing that
corporate America needs to keep reaching itshelping hands out to the very communities thatsupport it.
Q:The recent excitement generated byPresident’s Summit for America’s Futurehas kept its momentum, with more andmore leaders in corporate Americasupporting community needs. Explainsome of Time Warner’s communityinvolvement and how you supportemployees who volunteer?
A:One way or another we’re involvedvirtually in every community inwhich Time Warner has a majorpresence. "Time to Read" was what Icall a ‘top down’ involvement, wherewe had someone at the corporate levelstart a program or generate supportfor a program at the top level. TimeWarner’s access to printed materialscombined with employees who wouldvolunteer to help adults and childrenlearn to read or read better. Then wehave what I call "grassroots" initiationof corporate involvement.

Time Warner Q2 2008Earnings Conference Call -Q&A with Mr. Jeffrey L.Bewkes, President, ChiefExecutive Officer, Director, Mr.Doug Shapiro, Vice President,Investor Relations and Mr.John K. Martin Jr., Chief
Financial Officer, Executive Vice President.
Q:Thanks so much. You mentioned thatyou’ve completed the economic splitbetween the access and audiencebusiness, opening you up to strategicoptions and I just had a question on theaccess part of the business. I think mostinvestors sort of contemplate the dial-upbusiness essentially merging withanother dial-up provider and then doinga spin-off. And I was just wondering ifyou could articulate any alternative tothat strategic path that the street is sortof focused on as the most likely outcome.Thanks.
A:We have said that, and of course wewill assess all of the options and Ithink all of you have written or readabout pretty much every conceivableone. One that ought to be thoughtabout really as a benchmark againstany kind of strategic change in ourposition in access would just beoperating it and seeing if the cashflow from that operation is superior toany yield we can get putting it intoalignment with some of the usualsuspects that get mentioned.

Jeffrey L. Bewkes, President &CEO, said that Time Warnerwould completely spin off itscable company.
Q:"In another era at Time Warner, before astar-crossed Internet merger, the hard-held belief of Gerald M. Levin, then thechief executive, was that 'content is andwill remain king, but distribution is thepower behind the throne.' These days,The New York Times says, the king seemsto be losing his throne. What can yousay about this?"
A:"Time Warner would completely spinoff its cable company, essentiallyshedding the pipes that haveunderpinned much of the company’sfortune."

Time WarnerIT Executive Interview
Richard D. Parsons
Chairman
How does Time Warner participate in acommunity project that an employee brings totheir attention?
Well, we put our money where our employeesefforts are, whether through our "Match aGift" program or donations of some kind. Agood example, one of our assistant secretariesis involved with the program "City Meals onWheels". When they have their "City Mealson Wheels" walks we (corporate) donate hats,T-Shirts and similar items.
Communities that are struggling economicallybenefit by your employees creating newcommerce.
Yes, you need a vibrant community to dobusiness. I’m personally involved in UpperManhattan Empowerment Zone. Nine zonesin the US are targeted, and the object is to getthe local community involved. A few Federaland State dollars are associated with astruggling area, but mostly corporate capitalcomes in and assists in building up orempowering the area to grow. Los Angeles hasan Empowerment Zone. Time Warnersupports this program because I do.
I’ve heard about the Andrew Heiskell Award.Could you explain that program and how itworks to promote volunteering in thecommunity?
Sure. The way that program works is everyyear, supervisors can nominate for this awardsomeone who works for them. It all happensbelow the supervisor level. Those who areinvolved in their own communities, who areon their own time, and usually drawing ontheir own resources. There’s a selectioncommittee that chooses eight to ten
outstanding nominees and the companyrecognizes them at an annual awardsluncheon. The winners receive monetary giftsin recognition of their efforts in thecommunity and then the company alsomakes an additional contribution to whatevercharity or non-profit organization thewinners designate. And let me tell you also, that in many cases the winners donate theiraward monies to their favorite charity orphilanthropic program, but it’s their call.
The President’s Summit in Philadelphia focusedon "mentoring" what are your thoughts onmentoring?

Actually, as a direct outgrowth of theSummit’s approach to mentoring, HBO willbe putting out some very dramatic electronicPSA’s, public service announcements, on thatvery issue. America’s youth need responsibleparenting and responsible teaching but, inthe absence of a responsible adult in a youngperson’s life, then mentoring can definitely bea good thing. Time Warner has also for yearsbeen involved in the "Partnership for a DrugFree America", lending our creative talentsand doing electronic and printed messages forthis worthwhile program.
How has supporting your employees efforts, saywith donations and recognition, affectedemployee relations?
Well, you know, an employee who getsinvolved in the community and then findssupport at work....its a smart thing to do as faras employee morale and employeessatisfaction with their whole life..... doinggood while doing well at the same time."

* Marketing solutions to support "thecustomer experience" and grow the businessthrough new channels such as online e-commerce; other marketing tools like Unicaand Customer Enterprise Data Warehouse tounderstand our customer behavior anddevelop enhanced marketing campaigns andenhanced offer management capabilities
* Solutions to grow the commercial servicesbusiness selling new products
My responsibilities at Time Warner Cable alsoinclude billing system operations and BSSdelivery and support; IT transformation tosupport our service oriented architecture;enterprise data center operations and backoffice network operations.
"How has your role shifted over the past fiveyears, since joining from CapGemini Ernst &Young?"
"Ever since hitting the ground at TWC, wehave been running 1,000 miles an hour. TWCis rolling out new products and building newbusiness at a tremendous pace. Thetechnology support required is complex andneeds to be nimble to support growth anddelivery. This pace, complexity andaccountability is a great environment for meand a lot of fun. (We are aging in dog years.)"
"Do you think that MSOs have a distinct set of ITrequirements - distinct from traditional telcosand other service providers - or has the linesufficiently blurred?"
"It has blurred. However, the competitionbreeds innovation, and the MSOs haveadvantages to innovate in different ways, andthat difference will provide a competitiveadvantage."
"What is the best role for IT/technologyconsultants in the MSO world?"
"The best role for IT and technologyconsultants to play is to understand ourbusiness and technology strategy and bringnew ideas or accelerators to us forconsideration."
"What aspect of your job do you find the mostchallenging? The most rewarding?"
"The most challenging aspect of my job ishow to integrate our legacy and newtechnology to support new businesses andnew products in a pace that supports ourbusiness growth opportunities.
The most rewarding is working with ourpeople and the teaming required at all levelsof the organization to support our operationsand growth."
"For several years, there's been an effort to getindividual services and their respective backoffices out of their individual silos and into amore unified whole. Do you see this actuallyhappening? If so, how has it affected your job?"

"Our strategy is to create a service orientedarchitecture that has the services built fromour legacy applications and new applicationsto support our third-party relationships/newventures and other new applications. Thisstrategy is maturing and is how we arekeeping up with the demands on IT. Over thelast few years, IT has grown to be animportant part of our business operations."
"What are some of the trickier IT challengesinvolved in offering business services as opposedto residential?"
"Business services have different SLAcommitments, which require differentinvestments and technology to support. Thetools are also different.
