Here’s an step-by-step tutorial to make a handy Mielie pouch that will protect your iPod or camera from bumps and knocks.

You will need:- A piece of hessian (burlap) approx 40 x 30cm depending on the size of your pouch

- Some t-shirt fabric, preferably in different colours.- A crochet hook- Contact glue- A piece of felt, approx 30 x 15cm- Needle & thread- A press stud

11 Using a crochet hook, pull the t-shirtstrip through the hessian from the bottomso that the end bit is on top. Now hooka loop of t-shirt strip through the hessianto form a “corn kernel” on the top.

10 Cut a piece of t-shirt fabric alongthe selvedge into strips about 3cm wide.Pull the strips lengthwise so that the

edges curl inwards.

12 Follow the pattern, changing coloursas you go. Don’t worry about the messyend bits - we’ll deal with them later.

9 Draw on your design with a permanent marker.

15 Glue the hessianonto the weavingwith contact glue.

14 Cut awaythe corners, taking care

not to cut tooclose to the

weaving - nocloser than 1cm.

16 Cut a piece of felt to the exactsize of the weaving& stick it on to the hessian. You can usea bottle or rolling pinto roll it flat.

17 Fold according to your iPod/Camerasize & Sew up the sides. Add a pressstud to close. Et Voila! You’re done.

13 When you’vefinished weaving,snip the end bitsflush with therest of the weaving & turnover. Fold thehessian over theweaving & cutaway any overlap.
