Andrew Tye (Rajasthan Royals) and the duo of Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa (both Royal Chal- lengers Bangalore) with- drew as apprehension set in after a couple of weeks went by smoothly for the league held in front of empty stands across six venues. "We understand that many of you are apprehen- sive about how you will get back home once the tourna- ment concludes... We want to apprise you that you have nothing to worry about," BCCI COO Hemang Amin said in a letter addressed to the players. "The BCCI will do every- thing to ensure that you reach your respective desti- nations seamlessly. The BCCI is monitoring the situ- ation very closely and is working with the govern- ment authorities to make arrangements to get you home once the tournament concludes. "Be rest assured that the tournament is not over for BCCI till each one of you has reached your home, safe and sound," he added. India is recording over 3 lakh daily cases for the past few days and the health in- frastructure is struggling to handle the rise with short- age of oxygen and some crucial medicines adding to the crisis. Australia on Tuesday sus- pended all direct passenger flights from India with im- mediate effect until May 15 due to the "very significant" spike in COVID-19 cases. Kolkata Knight Riders mentor David Hussey ac- knowledged that Aus- tralians in the IPL are a "bit nervous" about getting back home in the wake of the situation here. Amin lauded the players for carrying on. "As some of you have said, 'if we can help dis- tract people from all the troubles of recent times, even if it is for a short while, we have done a great job'. When you all walk out onto the field, you are bringing hope to mil- lions of people who have tuned in. "If, even for a minute, you can bring a smile on someone's face, then you have done well. While you are professionals and will play to win, this time you are also playing for some- thing much more impor- tant," he concluded. Several England and New Zealand players are also competing in the event but haven't yet spo- ken about their concerns. The IPL final is scheduled to be held on May 30 in Ahmedabad. As many as 14 Australian players remain in the event, including stars such as Steve Smith (DC), David Warner (SunRisers Hyder- abad) and Pat Cummins (Kolkata Knight Riders), as well as coaches Ricky Ponting (DC) and Simon Katich (RCB). Several Australians, in- cluding former Test captain Ricky Ponting, are also in- volved in the IPL as coaches.Australia on Tues- day suspended direct flights from India until at least May 15 to prevent more virulent COVID-19 strains entering the country, and Morrison said the crick- eters would not be allowed to jump the queue for repatriation flights when they resume. "It's done on vulnerabil- ity," Morrison told re- porters. "They travelled there privately under those arrangements, this wasn't part of an Australian tour. "They're under their own resources and they'll be us- ing those resources to, I'm sure, see them return to Australia."Batsman Chris Lynn said he had asked governing body Cricket Australia (CA) to arrange a charter flight to bring play- ers home at the end of the IPL."I texted ... that as Cricket Australia make 10% of every IPL contract was there a chance we could spend that money this year on a charter flight once the tournament is over?" Lynn, who plays for Mumbai Indians, told News Corp media. "We are not asking for shortcuts and we signed up knowing the risks. But it would be great to get home as soon as the event is over." CA declined to com- ment. The regular season ends on May 23, with playoffs to follow before the final on May 30. India's coronavirus death toll neared the bleak milestone of 200,000 with another 2,771 fatalities re- ported on Tuesday, while its armed forces pledged urgent medical aid to help battle the staggering spike in infections. The IPL is being played under biosecurity proto- cols and Lynn said he felt comfortable in the envi- ronment and had no im- mediate plans to leave. "Obviously India is in chaos at the moment. But we are at least giving peo- ple something to smile about by playing the tour- nament," he added. Eoin Morgan, one of 11 England players in the IPL, said they were constantly talking about the situation outside the bubble. "It's not nice to watch from afar, considering how lucky we are in a bubble and not be affected by it very much," Morgan told reporters. "We lend our support ... to everybody who is ill or going through tough times." New Zealand Cricket Players Association chief executive Heath Mills said none of their players had asked to go home. "There's no doubt they're certainly anxious about what's happening in India and what they're wit- nessing. But they feel well looked-after by their IPL franchises and safe in their bubbles," Mills said. Tye asked.'If sport can continue and be one of those avenues to relieve stress or give a glimmer of hope that the world is OK and there is light at the end of the tunnel, I think it should go ahead.
