iPhone 5, the apple of my i?

Fresh out of the ‘Apple’ basket is the iPhone 5, released less than a fortnight ago

on 21st September 2012. It is the 6th generation from the iPhone line and the

highest selling Smartphone till date, with 5 million units sold within the first

three days of release.

Now, without much ado, let’s dive right in to the analysis!

The iPhone 5 is not a major deviation from its predecessor, the 4S, but it does

offer some very interesting and spanking new features. For a start, it is the first

of its line to support 4G LTE.

The new phone has a dual tone aluminium and glass back that makes it more

resistant to physical shocks. The phone adopts the unibody design with a non-

removable battery and no microSD card slot. It is also much lighter and thinner,

owing to a major change in dock connector section. The new 8 pin dock

connector, dubbed ‘Lightning’, replaces the old 30 pin one and comes with

duplicate pins on both sides of the cable so it can be used either way. The only

downside is there are compatibility issues with older Apple accessories which

can be solved only by shelling out an additional $30 for an adapter!

The phone’s dimensions remain the same except for the height - 123.8mm(H) X

58.6mm(W) X 7.6mm(D). It weighs a modest 112g. It has been made taller to

accommodate the larger 4-inch touch panel screen without any compromise on

the width. This is a good move as users are not inconvenienced by unnecessary

bulk and can still operate the phone easily with a single hand.

The USP of the iPhone 5 is definitely the display and the processing power. It

incorporates a Retina technology display with a resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels.

Retina technology is designed to smooth out the jagged edges of pixels to give a

very high quality image. It also packs 326 pixels per inch (ppi) which adds to

the visual experience. The new 16:9 aspect ratio makes it a treat to watch

movies and videos. Touch sensor technology from Sharp allows the touch panel

and thus the phone to be thinner.

The iPhone 5 is powered by a dual core A6 processor based on ARMv7

architecture and can climb up to a speedy 1.3GHz. Apple CEO Tim Cook was
