Schritt 1 — Broken Glass

If your display glass is cracked, keep further breakage contained and prevent bodily harm duringyour repair by taping the glass.

Lay overlapping strips of clear packing tape over the iPhone's display until the whole face iscovered.

This will keep glass shards contained and provide structural integrity when prying and lifting thedisplay.

Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from any glass shaken free during the repair.

Schritt 2 — Battery

Remove the two 3.7mm Phillips #00screws from the dock-connector endof the iPhone.

Schritt 3

Remove the metal handle from thesuction cup. It's easier and safer togrip the suction cup's base insteadof the metal handle.

Be very careful when opening theiPhone so that the cables under thedisplay are not severed.

There is a rubber gasket betweenthe silver front bezel and blackdisplay assembly. A bit of force isrequired in this step to separate theiPhone's display assembly. It mayhelp to rock the suction cup backand forth to remove the displayassembly.

Use a small suction cup near theHome button to gently pull up thebottom portion of the iPhone'sdisplay assembly.

If the display assembly is toodamaged to allow the suction cup toadhere, tape with a strong adhesivesuch as duct tape or packing tapemay be used.

disconnect the black ribbon cablelabeled "1". (Cable 1 is for thedisplay)

Be careful to insert the spudgerfrom the left, as shown in thepicture (UNDER THE RIBBON). Ifyou try to pry up the ribbon fromthe right, you could damage theribbon connector and need toreplace the display!

All connectors except the ribbonconnector "3" mentioned in step 7release upwards.

Schritt 6

Rotate the display assembly up untilit is roughly vertical. This will alloweasier access for disconnecting theremaining cables.

Use a spudger to disconnect theblack ribbon cable labeled "2".(Cable 2 is for the capacitative touchpanel)

Schritt 7

Please note: You may find on somenon-American (Chinese, European)versions of the 3G that the flip upplastic tab does not exist. In thiscase you would slide the ribboncable towards the screen until it isremoved. When you assemble it,you would apply pressure to theribbon to insert it back into theribbon "socket."

Some iPhones may have theconnector colors reversed (blackplastic tab, white connector) forconnector "3". Make sure you'reflipping up the tab properly, otherwise you may damage theconnector.

Use a spudger to flip up the whiteplastic tab holding the ribbon cable"3" in place. The white tab will rotateup 90 degrees, releasing the ribboncable.

Slide the black ribbon cable out of itsconnector, and remove the displayassembly from the iPhone.

Schritt 11

Use a spudger to disconnect the ribbon cable labeled "6."

If you have an iPhone 3GS, refer to the second picture and use a spudger to disconnect the ribboncable labeled "7."

Be certain that the connectors on the ribbon cables are perfectly aligned with the sockets on themother board before applying pressure. This may require a magnifying glass or jewelers' loupe.

Schritt 12

Remove the following 8 screws:

Five 2.3 mm Phillips #00 screwswith partial threads securing thelogic board to the rear case.

Two 2.3 mm Phillips #00 screwswith full threads securing the logicboard and camera.

One 2.9 mm Phillips #00 screwfrom beneath the "Do not remove"sticker.

Note for re-assembly:

The screw that goes next to thecamera (bottom right orangehighlighted screw) also has ametal strip that holds the camerain place.

Remember to put this strip backin place before you insert the 2.3mm Phillips #00 screw with fullthread next to the camera

Schritt 13

Use a spudger to gently pry thecamera up and out of its housing inthe rear case.

The camera cannot be removedentirely yet because it's connectedto the bottom of the logic board.

Schritt 14

Use a spudger to gently pry up theend of the logic board closest to thedock connector.

There is a small golden groundingtab on logic board adjacent to the'do not remove sticker'. Be VERYcareful this does not snag on theside of the case when prying up thelogic board; it breaks easily. If youhave signal problems after removingthe logic board, check this groundtab.

If the board won't lift up, doublecheck to make sure all the screwssecuring the logic board have beenremoved.

Schritt 15

Slide the logic board towards thedock connector and out of theiPhone.

When replacing the logic board afterinstalling battery, connect thecamera to the logic board beforeinserting it into the case. Then makesure to set the top section of thelogic board (where the SIM tray is)in place before settling the rest ofthe board in place. This is important,as sometimes the SIM card slot willnot align into place. Once the topsection is in place, the bottomsection can be maneuvered intoplace. You will know the logic boardis correctly installed when the SIMtray is aligned with the opening inthe iPhone case and the cameramodule seats neatly into its place.

Schritt 16

Use a spudger to pry the battery upfrom the rear case. The battery isattached with an adhesive striparound the perimeter of the battery. To prevent the battery from bendingduring the removal process, werecommend against using just theplastic pull-tab . *Note: Removingthe battery is NOT necessary forreplacing the GPS antenna. Itmerely gives you more space forremoving the headphone assembly(which is also unnecessary tocompletely remove).

The iPhone's battery is attached tothe rear case with a mild adhesive. This adhesive usually comes outattached to the battery. If yourreplacement battery alreadyincludes an adhesive backing, you're all set. If your replacementbattery doesn't have an adhesivebacking, you'll want to transfer theadhesive from your old battery to thenew one.

You can use a hair dryer or heat gunon its lowest setting to heat the backof the case. This will help loosen theadhesive bond before using thespudger to separate the battery fromthe case back.

Schritt 17 — Headphone Jack

Remove the two Phillips #00 screwssecuring the on/off switch to thefront bezel.

When replacing, check theprotrusion of the switch. There is asmall plastic spacer adhered to theinside of button which may come offwith cleaning. Without a spacer, thebutton may not protrude enough tobe depressed. If lost, it can bereplaced with a suitable thickness ofstiff plastic (eg shirt box lid).

Schritt 18

Carefully peel up the orange ribboncable from the rear case.

The ribbon cable is easily damaged- be very gentle.

Schritt 20

Remove the four Phillips #00 screwssecuring the volume and muteswitch.

The volume switch assembly sits ontop of the mute switch. Make surethat the small soft pad on the muteswitch is not lost, otherwise the muteswitch will sit very loosely afterreassembly.

The mute switch assembly screwsshould be tightened with the switchin the off position. Check theprotrusion of the switch when turnedon, since it may not stick out farenough to operate if the switchassembly is incorrectly positioned.(Check the gap between the switchframe and the bezel (white gapshowing between the two screwsnear the 6). The screw on the farright is slightly longer than the other3 screws. When reassembling thephone, keep this in mind.

In the following steps, you will partially remove the silver bezel attached to the rear panel. If theresidual adhesive is not enough to hold it together during reassembly, it may be necessary to applya light layer of glue around the inner edge of the bezel to keep it secured against the rear panel.

Insert the edge of an iPod opening tool into the gap between the silver bezel and the front panel onthe volume button side of the phone.

Run the edge of the opening tool along the seam to separate the two components. The goal is tolift the silver bezel enough to push the volume button into the rear case.
