What Changed When the final redlined document was completed, 40% of the document had changed between Revision B and Revision C

What Changed - Synergy A dedicated synergy committee was formed to align the three most used standards in our industry:

IPC/WHMA-A-620

• Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies

IPC-A-610

• Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies

J-STD-001

• Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies

What Changed - Synergy For this revision, there was a conscious effort to remove unintentional conflicts between the three standards

What Changed – 620 Standard Mirrored Accept & Defect Clauses

Where possible, the committee aligned the Acceptable and Defect clauses

This eliminates any assumption that the lack of defect criteria means the part is acceptable and vice versa

What Changed – 620 Standard More pictures to clearly define all criteria

A dedicated Graphics Team has been created to review pictures and present the best / clearest to the committee for inclusion into the standard

Expanded tables

Many tables were reviewed and refined to convey more information in tabular form

What’s New Section 1 – General

This entire opening section was re-organized to be similar in style and content to Section 1 in the upcoming revisions of IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001

• Summary of the various solder anomalies with inspection criteria by Class went from bullet points to tabular form

New Section 5.1.7 – Stamped and Formed – Open Barrel – Individual Wire Seal

• Criteria for application of an individual wire seal onto a terminated wire (Example Delphi’s Weather Pack Seal)

New Section 5.5 – Shrink Sleeving – Wire Support – Crimped Terminals

• Criteria for placement of heat shrink onto a crimped terminal

High Voltage is as defined by the customer

Provides unique criteria for high voltage soldered connections

What’s New Appendix A – Terms and Definitions

Added several new definitions

Expanded definition of Electrical Clearance with a table defining distances based on voltage.

All new, included as part of synergy project based on a similar section in J-STD-001

Why Participate? In order for the standard to truly represent our industry we need input from wire harness manufacturers who represent all three classes of manufactured products

How to Participate - Adopt Adopt the standard

Support the standard and WHMA’s efforts by adopting the standard for use within your company

Promote using the standard as a neutral third party when interacting with your customers

Become the “expert”, have someone within your organization become certified to the standard

There are several committees associated with the 620 standard :

• 7-31fs Space Electronics Assemblies Addendum Task Group

• 7-31ft IPC/WHMA-A-620 Technical Training Task Group (and a European Training Task Group)

• 7-31h IPC/HDBK-620 Handbook Task Group

How to Participate - Join Committee Meetings are typically held twice a year

In San Diego in conjunction with APEX, in February

In Chicago in conjunction with SMTA , in October

This year, there will be a special 3 hour meeting held during the Milwaukee Wire Harness show

How to Participate - Submit Help update the standard

In the back of the standard is a submittal form to suggest additions or changes.

The form can be submitted by mail or email to IPC directly – anyone can submit.

WHMA members can email either Bud Bowen, Co-Chair (b.bowen@winchesterelectronics.com )

or Cathy Hanlin, Vice-Chair (hanlincj@precmfgco.com) and they can submit for you.

How to Participate - Submit The committee may contact you for further information

Submission does not necessarily mean that the proposal will be accepted but the committee will look at it, assign someone to further research if needed, discuss the pros and cons of the submittal, and, as a group, vote to accept or reject the submission
