I believe we all do; it is in our DNA. We are inspired by tales of heroes and villains, conflicts resolved, damsels rescued, victories achieved or redemption experienced. Some stories are funny; some make us cry. ey captivate and compel us.ey motivate us to be better people: give more, sacrifice greater, love truer, live wiser. Good stories even transcend time, language and culture. Lines from these stories are burned into our minds and grip our hearts. Our best stories have a power to not merely impart information but affect a transformation. For me Tolkien did this. His tales, particularly e Lord of the Rings, engaged me. I was that obscure hobbit, a little guy in a big world. Only a grown up germ among many, who would live a meaningless life, unnoticed but by a few, insignificant. But in Tolkien’s world, like in all good stories, there was a larger narrative, a grander plot, one even a hobbit can get caught in. Called to make a transcendent difference, affect change, be significant…that happens in stories. And that imparts hope; at least it did for me. What is the grand narrative of history? What is THIS all about? Why am I here? Even as a tenth grader these were the questions I was considering when the gospel was communicated to me. What is the gospel? It is good news…the best of news… e Best of News! e Best Story, and in this story is where our hope lies. My hope was born when I was overwhelmed that my story, like a hobbit’s in Middle Earth, could be caught up in THE STORY; the meaning of history. e Story is the story of a kingdom. God’s kingdom. God was redeeming for Himself a people from among those He created in His image, who rebelled and fell away from Him in sin, and He was doing this through the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ, the God-Man, and His Son. At Christmas, more than any other time, we celebrate e Story. e climax of e Story is the incarnation of Christ and the accessibility of God’s kingdom. Jesus’ life and ministry and subsequently His death and resurrection inaugurate the kingdom. His life is the crescendo of history. It is the pivotal act. e culmination of e Story is our glorification and the fully revealed kingdom at the end of time. We now live in the resolution phase of e Story. e kingdom is here, but not yet in its fullest sense. We pray to realize it on earth more, we effect it through repentance and submission to Him and we proclaim it to rescue those in darkness from the end that is certain. But in e Story there are two heroes. e Son is certainly one. As we celebrate at Christmas, He was given, “at the fullness of time.” He entered in objectively in history, sent by God to achieve a goal as He accomplished a task (see Galatians 4:4-5). He achieved our redemption as He substituted Himself through atoning for our sin. But God sends another hero too (vs. 6). He sends the Spirit. e Spirit too invades, not being born into the world of flesh, but into our hearts. He also achieves a goal as He accomplishes a task. He cries out in us, “Abba! Father!” giving us an inward experience of the objective truth of our adoption into the family of God. At the beginning, I said our best stories have a power to not merely impart information but affect a transformation. e Best Story does even more. It is a story of incarnation and indwelling. It communicates life. You see, Jesus is our hope. We have no alternative but Him. It is Jesus in us, through His Spirit, which is our hope of glory. We know Him, we commune with Him, we walk with Him, and we worship Him. e heart that does not genuinely

Dr. Read Schuchardt is AssociateProfessor of Communication atWheatonCollege (IL)andanexpertintheeffectsofmediaandtechnologyuponculture.

Digital communication technology hasdelivered us into a golden age of newcommunication with a broader, deeper, andwider set of relationships than ever before, faster than ever before, transforming theworld into a truly global village. No onequestionsordoubtstheblessingsofthisnewtechnology.Butalongwiththeblessing, thereisadownside, whichisaseriesofunintendedconsequences taking the formof the thingswe lose — as individuals, institutions, andcultures—asthetradeofforhiddencostofsuchrapidprogress.

In this multimedia presentation, WheatonCollegecommunicationprofessorReadMercerSchuchardtwillpresentthemediaecologyofournewcommunicationenvironment, revealtheseven“vices”ofthevirtuallife, andrevealwhat theyhave todowithChristianity andhow, uniquely, the informed Christian isbest poised to respond to these challengestoday. The talks are based on a book thatis forthcoming from InterVarsityPress, andcomes just after Professor Schuchardt hastravelled to 24 countrieswhere he has seenthispatternatplayincountriesandcultureswithvaryingdegreesofimmersionindigitaltechnology.

I was pro-choice before I was born again. I cametoChrist in January 1993, when I was 25. Very early inmy Christian walk, theHoly Spirit convictedme that life beginsatconception. GodknewJeremiahwhenJeremiahwas in thewomb—andGodordainedhimtobeaprophetbeforehewaseven born ( Jeremiah 1:5-6). When the soon-to-be birth oftheMessiah was announced, John the Baptist rejoiced in his mother’swomb(Luke1:21).
