Maths Apps and Maths App-‐,vi,es
It has been proven that using iPad Apps for Maths improves problem solving skills and mental arithme9c speed. There are a range of Apps to support this subject area, for example, “Numbers” can be used with formulas to test and monitor conjectures whereas “Explain Everything” is used to record ideas which can be shared via the whiteboard. During this workshop, teachers will explore a range of Maths Apps as well as other Apps that will support lessons and projects.
Example Class Projects
This hands-‐on workshop demonstrates how to structure a class project. When using iPads in the classroom, projects are split into three sec9ons; Research & Capture, Create & Edit, Share & Publish. Knowsley CLCs will demonstrate a range of free and inexpensive Apps to create a final project using a range of popular examples from subject areas such as Science, History and Geography. This workshop can be tailored to a specific subject/curriculum area with prior no9ce.
Class Blogs & Social Networking for Teachers
This workshop provides a great introduc9on to social networking in schools. Using a class blog allows teachers the opportunity to teach social web e9queVe and what informa9on is suitable to post in a safe and monitored environment. We have also found blogs to be a great method to engage with parents and showcase/share work. During this workshop, we will demonstrate how to set up a blog, pos9ng with Apps, uploading video and images, privacy seWngs and how to use TwiVer/Facebook as a communica9on tool for your school.
Conduc,ng experiments
The iPad can be used in a variety of ways to support the delivery of Science, from calcula9ng pH to exploring the periodic table, in fact, the possibili9es are endless. During this workshop, Knowsley CLCs will highlight how to capture experiments using iMovie. This will take the form of a video diary including an introduc9on to the experiment, the purpose of the research subject and what is expected to happen. We will show you how to capture the experiment including a running commentary by the learner and how to capture thoughts on the outcome, why it happened and reflect on what the learner had predicted to happen. We will then demonstrate how learners can document what they have learnt in Apps such as “Skitch”.
Digital StoryTelling
This workshop will introduce a variety of ways in which digital stories can be storyboarded, captured, edited and exported. There are three main mediums for students to create scripted and fun stories using the iPad, e.g. Movie Crea9on, Stop Anima9on and Real-‐Time Anima9on. This workshop will combine tutorials and hands-‐on sessions of the Apps to demonstrate all three methods, providing aVendees with the knowledge and crea9vity to implement digital storytelling into the school curriculum.
Crea,ve Wri,ng & Digital Books
Crea9ng ePubs are a great way to engage students, develop literacy skills and provide the opportunity to summarise/evidence a class project. This workshop will demonstrate how to create ePubs incorpora9ng various sources of media, e.g. audio, film and artwork – all on the iPad. The workshop will finish with illustra9ng how to publish an ePub to iBooks, making it freely available to all.
Using iTunesU Course Manager
iTunes U allows staff to create and share their own media rich resources. These resources can then be shared with the class so they have all the materials they need for a project/course at their finger9ps. The class can annotate the materials with their own notes as they progress through the course/project whereas teachers can update the materials, send out no9fica9ons and new assignments. Once the project or course is completed, learners can evaluate what they have learnt -‐ all through one App! Any resources produced can also be easily shared amongst staff in your school. This workshop is a beginners guide for teachers on how to u9lise this App most effec9vely in the classroom.
Music and Podcast Crea,on
This hands-‐on workshop demonstrates how to create songs/soundtracks using a variety of instruments and recording op9ons available on the iPad. Knowsley CLCs will demonstrate how to plug in instruments or use the iPad as the instrument to record sound loops and link the devices together for ‘jam’ sessions. Musical knowledge maximises the power of “Garageband” but non-‐musical projects can be developed as this App can be used to capture audio for news reports, interviews, sports commentary etc and thus can be used across the curriculum.
Each of the workshops detailed in this brochure will be delivered at your school and will last approximately one hour. Knowsley CLCs
will provide iPads for the duration of the training session.
Charge is £50 per workshop - maximum number of people within one workshop is 20 people.
