DESCRIPTION

Desktop Virtualisation has become one of the hottest topics in IT in 2009. VMware has been active in developing solutions that allow organisations to recognise the benefits of providing their desktop users with virtual PC instances that are secure always-on and deployed within minutes. Find out why many organisations are poised to adopt desktop virtualisation as the “next phase” of their IT development strategy. Richard Flanders is VMware’s head of desktop product marketing for EMEA. His presentation will cover the key strategic considerations that lie behind desktop virtualisation projects and will look in detail at the return on investment that any organisation can expect from this technology

“We’re in the process of opening a new emergency room at the hospital. Because of the critical nature of the computing environment, it has to be up and running extremely quickly. With VMware View, instead of having to buy 150 PCs and fully configure them, we’re going to roll out 150 thin clients, connect them to their pre-configured hosted virtual desktops, and be on our way.”

Network Specialist,

Huntsville Hospital

The VDI user-experience is crucial!

Desktop virtualisation projects need to deliver these elements of the user-experience:

Easy-to-use connection interface at first log-on – the user should simply have to enter username and password

A user-experience that mirrors that of the full PC as closely as possible

The ability to view video, flash applications and embedded html content without noticeable degradation of image or performance

The ability to integrate other convergent devices, e.g. softphones, within the virtualised PC instance

Some VDI projects fail to gain acceptance within customer environments because they do not deliver these elements of the user-experience.
