Use Case Examples Flow Leak Detection: The water utility provisions a fleet of MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 devices to run separate IoTA Clients which are configured to work with an attached flow sensor. The flow sensors are enclosed and attached to the water pipes that need to be monitored. Each flow sensor measures water level data and sends it to IoTA cloud. The customer uses IoTA Creator to set the anomaly detection limits and associated business logic. For instance, identification of a leak may trigger an audible alarm in a control centre. Through such a system, the water utility is able to realise significant savings due to early leak detection.

Connected Smoke/CO Alarm: An energy utility supplies Bluetooth-enabled joint smoke and CO alarms to customers which can be configured and monitored remotely via a multiplatform solution. Alarm notifications can be received by customers via a smartphone app and at the alarm centre via a central monitoring control panel from which appropriate calls to action can be made. Using this system ensures the utility company are able to respond as rapidly as possible to an incident and also provides customers with peace of mind when they are out of the house.

Electricity Monitor: A commercial property company provisions a single Raspberry Pi which is connected to an electrical current measurement sensor in one of its buildings. The sensor sends back current measurements to IoTA. The customer uses IoTA Creator to build machine learning logic that is capable of recognising different types of usage patterns and is thus able to provide a sophisticated building activity tracking facility. In this way the company is able to understand how the building electricity is being used and make adjustments to optimise that usage. For example, dimming lighting where no activity is detected.

Gesture-based Messaging: Two smartphones are connected to each other by registering with a custom IoTA web application which is able to access and control key phone sensors through a standard HTML5 interface. The first user undertakes a gesture on their phone which is analysed using machine learning capability built into the IoTA web application and transmitted via IoTA Cloud to the second smartphone where it triggers a corresponding reaction. This way IoTA is a key enabler for a fun new gesture-based social communication and messaging system.

These four worked examples serve to illustrate how the power and capability IoTA provides enables both cost savings and rapid innovation using the Internet of Things.

IoTA System Architecture

The IoTA platform is comprised of three core elements which deliver the platform promise of security, speed and scalability using smart choreography of open source and public cloud technology:

IoTA Client: Portable sensor framework optimised for compact Linux-based microprocessor hardware including MediaTek LinkIt and Raspberry Pi. IoTA Client handles the connection to IoTA Cloud which is conducted using the open MQTT protocol over a secure TLSv1.2 encrypted connection with unique digital credentials specifically created and deployed to each separate hardware device as part of provisioning.

IoTA Cloud: Secure scalable cloud-based data storage, machine learning and visualisation platform. Users are able to access and control a provisioned device fleet through a user-friendly web configurator called IoTA Creator that allows them to rapidly compose the business logic and calls to action their particular use cases require.

IoTA Enterprise: Backend Enterprise integration framework that allows rapid and easy integration with traditional Enterprise environments with out of the box plugins for CRM, ERP and Enterprise Service Bus technologies such as Salesforce, SAP and Mule.
