Piraeus was declared as a township in 517 B.C and it’s walling was finished between 471 and 465 B.C. Piraeus in ancient times, like today, was mostly an introductory port with a great shipping and freight motion, especially from October to April, when the weather conditions facilitate the voyages of sailing boats. Except of the trade there was an important development in manufacturing with representative departments shipbuilding , metallurgy and pottery.

In the port the most important port works were done to provide the possibility to cater to the needs of the port movement of the time, that reached about 2500 ships and 1.500.000 tones of cargos per year. There were some other works that were done and helped the development of the port as the railway connection to Athens in 1869.
