Warm Up

1. Your little brother is eating a twix. What are two ways you can get some of that twix?

2. Is it easier to share belongings between two people that are similar or two people that are different? Give examples!

EQ: How do we name ionic compounds?

HOT Q1: What is the difference between molecular and ionic compounds?

HOT Q2: What are the rules for writing the ionic formula from the name?

HOT Q3: What are the rules for writing the name from the formula?

Two Types of Compounds

• Today, we learned the rules for molecular compounds

• Tomorrow, we will learn the rules for naming ionic compounds

• But how do we tell the two apart???

Page 5: Ionic Naming

• Ionic Compounds – made of a METAL and a nonmetal

• Molecular Compounds - does not have a metal (could be nonmetal + nonmetal or metalloid + nonmetal)

Page 6: Ionic Naming

Example

• Molecular of Ionic?

F3Cl5

Page 7: Ionic Naming

Flash!

• You will be given an index card• On one side, write a big M• On the other side, write a big I• When I give you the signal, you will hold up

either M for Molecular, or I for Ionic

Page 8: Ionic Naming

• Molecular of Ionic?

NaCl

• Molecular of Ionic?

Example

• Molecular of Ionic?

Si2F5

Page 12: Ionic Naming

Example

• Molecular of Ionic?

KF

Page 13: Ionic Naming

• When a nonmetal and a metal meet each other, they can’t share. They’re too different!

• So…the nonmetal will GRAB electron(s) from the metal.

Page 14: Ionic Naming

• It forms an ION. Hence, the name IONIC bond

• Ionic Compounds = made of a metal and a nonmetal

Page 15: Ionic Naming

Cation and AnionIonic Compounds are made of a cation and an anion.• Cation – a POSITIVELY charged atom formed by

losing an electron (almost always a metal)• Anion – a NEGATIVLEY charged atom formed by

gaining an electron (almost always a non-metal)

Page 16: Ionic Naming

Ionic Love• How do we name these ionic compounds?

Page 17: Ionic Naming

How do we go from formula to its name?

Ionic compounds DO NOT use Greek prefixes like molecular compounds. Charge is used instead.

1.Metals become cations (+).- Group 1 metals have a +1 charge (ex: Na+, Li+, K+)- Group 2 metals have a +2 charge (Mg2+, Ca2+)- Upper part of Group 3 have a +3 charge (Al3+)For cations, the ion name is the same as the element (Na+

= sodium ion)

Fill in the group charges on your periodic table

Page 18: Ionic Naming

Ionic Rules Continued…

2. Non-metals form anions (-) (except Hydrogen-can form H+ or H-)-The noble gases have no charge (don’t react!) -The halogens form a -1 charge (F-, Cl-, Br-)-The oxygen family forms a -2 charge (O2-, S2-)-The nitrogen family forms a -3 charge (N3-, P3-)For anions, change the ending to “-ide” (ex: O2- = oxide and P3- = phosphide)

** Fancy word for charge = oxidation number

Page 19: Ionic Naming

Steps

• 1. Write the cation (re: metal element) name. It will be the SAME as the normal element!

• 2. Write the anion (re: nonmetal element) name and change the ending to -ide.

How do we go from name to formula?Cesium Oxide

1. Write the symbol of each element

Write the oxidation number of each element using the periodic table.

2. Swap, drop and chop it!1. Swap the charges2. Drop the charges3. Chop off charge, reduce to simplest ratio)

Transition Metals

Remember “short crazy land”? These are the transition metals and they have multiple charges- IF THE CHARGE VARIES, we need roman numerals to show the charge (ex: Fe2+ = iron (II) and Fe3+ = iron (III))-3 EXCEPTIONS: zinc is always Zn2+, cadmium is always Cd2+, and silver is always Ag+1
