Guest speaker biographies

Prof Chris Fitzpatrick Professor Chris Fitzpatrick is a Consultant Obstetrician &

Gynaecologist (Coombe Women & Infants University

Hospital) and Clinical Professor (UCD School of

Medicine). He graduated from UCD in 1983 and trained

in Urogynaecology in the UK and USA before taking up a

consultant post in the Coombe Hospital in 1996. He was

Master/CEO in 2006-2012. His special areas of interest

include Clinical Obstetrics, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction,

Medical Education, Clinicians in Management, the Arts

and Medicine and Clinical Risk Management.

Dr Karen Robinson

Karen qualified in Medicine from the University of

Glasgow in 1991. After 10 years clinical experience in

Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Anaesthesia in both the

UK and Ireland, she became Drug Safety Project Co-

ordinator in The Adelaide and Meath Hospital,

incorporating The National Children’s Hospital (AMNCH),

the first role of its kind in Ireland. Subsequently she

expanded her interest in clinical risk management

joining the State Claims Agency (SCA) as a Clinical Risk

Adviser in 2006 where she has had a specific remit for

maternity services for the last 11 years.

Prof Fergal Malone MD, FACOG, FRCOG, FRCPI

Professor Fergal Malone is currently Master of the

Rotunda Hospital. He qualified from University College

Dublin in 1991. He completed his obstetrics and

gynaecology residency training in the United States,

which included a fellowship in high-risk obstetrics,

obstetric ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis at Tufts

University – New England Medical Center, Boston.

Uniquely in Ireland, he is Board Certified by the

American Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both

Obstetrics and in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Dr Mike Robson

MBBS FRCS(Eng) MRCOG FRCPI. Trained and qualified St

Thomas’s Hospital, London England MBBS 1982.

Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Wycombe

General Hospital England 1995-2001. Clinical Director

Dr Jennifer Donnelly

Dr. Jennifer Donnelly graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1997. Jennifer commenced training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Dublin followed by the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. She then pursued Higher Specialist Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, worked as Assistant Master at the Rotunda and completed a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship program between Columbia University Medical Center, New York and the Rotunda Hospital/ Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital). As a certified subspecialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine, her practice focuses on obstetric care and obstetric ultrasound in particular.

Dr John Loughrey

Dr John Loughrey is a Consultant Anaesthetist at The Rotunda Hospital and The Mater Misercordiae University Hospitals since 2002. Prior to that he worked at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is Clinical Director at The Rotunda Hospital, and is also the Anaesthesia Assessor on the Maternal Death Enquiry Ireland and with MBRRACE UK. He is the immediate Past-president of the Irish Society of Obstetric Anaesthesia

Prof John Morrison Professor Morrison has been in post as Professor of

Obstetrics & Gynaecology at National University of

Ireland, Galway/ Consultant Obstetrician &

Gynaecologist at Galway University Hospital since 1997.

Before joining the National University of Ireland, Galway

he worked at University College London as a Lecturer in

Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Senior Registrar in

Obstetrics & Gynaecology. He completed RCOG sub-

specialty training in Feto-Maternal Medicine at

University College London Hospitals. Before that he was

a clinical Registrar and Research Fellow at University of

Cambridge Clinical School, Addenbrookes Hospital,

Cambridge. He is a Consultant Obstetrician

Gynaecologist with Health Services Executive at Galway

University Hospital and provides a sub-specialty clinical

service in Feto-Maternal Medicine.

Dr Maeve Eogan

Maeve Eogan is a consultant obstetrician and

gynaecologist at the Rotunda Hospital and runs the

‘Complicated Postnatal Care’ clinic, the majority

attending this clinic have sustained anal sphincter injury

at delivery or are pregnant again after previous anal

sphincter injury. In the course of postgraduate training

she completed a clinical research programme at the

perineal clinic at UCD/NMH, focussing on clinical

strategies to identify and modify the impact of childbirth

on the anal sphincter and the pelvic floor. The work

resulted in a MD thesis and a number of invited and

peer reviewed publications on this topic.

She is also obstetrician for the DOVE clinic (which

provides care to pregnant women who have addiction

issues, or who have, or are at risk of, infectious diseases

and blood borne viruses). Also medical director of the

Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATU) Rotunda Hospital

and National SATU services, as well as National Specialty

Director for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (IOG/RCPI).

Dr Mary Higgins

Mary Higgins works in the National Maternity Hospital /

University College Dublin as a Consultant Obstetrician /

Maternal Medicine Specialist. She trained in Ireland and

Canada.

Dr Peter McKenna

FRCOG FRCPI

Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Dr Peter McKenna qualified from UCD in 1974. He

worked as an Intern in St Vincent’s Hospital and then in

the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street where he

worked in both Obstetrics and in the Neo-natal Unit.

Following this, he went to England for five years where

he worked in Birmingham and Sheffield in a number of

hospitals, all delivering obstetric and gynaecological

services.

On returning to Ireland in the early 80’s, he worked as a

lecturer in Trinity which involved clinical duties in the

Adelaide Hospital and Rotunda. Following this he was a

Senior Registrar and Assistant Master in the Rotunda

and was appointed to Jervis Street Hospital and the

Rotunda as a Consultant in 1985. Prior to the closure of

Jervis Street, he moved to the Mater Hospital and has

been a Consultant there and at the Rotunda since 1986.

Dr Aisling Martin Qualified from UCD and after a year of Paediatrics went

into Obstetrics. Did my basic training in Dublin before

spending two years with Prof Kypros Nicolaides in King’s

College hospital in London where I completed my MD

thesis before returning to Ireland on the SpR scheme. In

2006 I went to Toronto where I did subspecialty training

in Maternal Fetal Medicine. I was appointed as

Consultant Obstetrician and fetal medicine specialist at

the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital in

2009. I run the Multiples clinic in the Coombe and other

areas of interest include fetal anomalies, placental

insufficiency, and prenatal testing and invasive

procedures. Was appointed Associate Professor in UCD

in May 2017

Prof Louise Kenny Louise is the Director of INFANT, Professor of Obstetrics at University College Cork and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital, where she specialises in the management of high risk pregnancy. Louise graduated in Medicine with Honours from the University of Liverpool, UK, in 1993. After completing her clinical and doctoral training in the UK, Louise moved to Ireland in 2006 where she has built up a large and successful research group, now housed within INFANT.

Prof Michael Turner Professor Turner trained in obstetrics and gynaecology

in Dublin and London, and was appointed as a

consultant in 1990. From 1992 to 1998 he served as

Master of the Coombe Women and Infants University

Hospital which is one of Europe's leading hospitals for

women's healthcare. In 2006 he was appointed the UCD

Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Coombe.

He is also Director of the UCD Centre for Human

Reproduction, one of the university's dedicated research

centres, which focuses on health services

implementation science and on modifiable clinical risk

factors for pregnancy such as maternal obesity,

gestational diabetes mellitus, aberrant fetal growth,

inadequate nutrition, infection and smoking. Since 2010

he has served as the country's first National Lead for the

Health Services Executive Clinical Programme in

Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, at the Royal College of Physicians of

Ireland, in conjunction with the Irish specialist societies are proud to announce that

the fourth Irish Congress of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatal Medicine will take

place in the Kilkenny Convention Centre at the Lyrath Hotel, Kilkenny, Ireland on

Thursday 30th November and Friday 1st December 2017.

Societies: The Irish Perinatal Society, Continence Foundation Ireland, Irish

Gynaecological Endoscopy Society, Irish Fertility Society, Irish Gynae-Oncology Society

and Junior Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society.

This meeting is aimed at consultants and non consultant hospital doctors in Obstetrics

and Gynaecology and Paediatrics, nurses, midwives, medical students and allied

health professionals.
