1. GlobalisationThis week’s lesson looks at the often contentious issue of globalisation.

LevelUpper intermediate and above (equivalent to CEF level B2 and above)

How to use the lesson1. Brainstorm on the subject of globalisation. What do students understand by the term? What different aspects of globalisation are they aware of? You could also ask the students whether they see globalisation as a positive or negative phenomenon.

2. Hand out Worksheet A, and give the students five to ten minutes to read through the text. Encourage them to look up any new vocabulary. You could ask them to check if any of the aspects they brainstormed about the topic are mentioned.

3. Hand out Worksheet B, divide the students into pairs, and ask them to work together to find the words to match the definitions in Exercise 1.

4. Check answers in open class.

5. Keeping the students in their pairs, give them a few minutes to answer the true/false/doesn’t say questions in Exercise 2.

6. Check answers in open class.

7. Give the students a few minutes to work together to discuss their answers to the questions in Exercise 3.

8. Check answers in open class. Afterwards you could initiate a discussion by asking the students if they agree or disagree with any of the opinions expressed on Worksheet A, and why.

9. Finally, ask the students to put away Worksheets A and B or to temporarily hand them back to you. Hand out Worksheet C and give the students another few minutes for the gap-fill exercise in which they have to replace individual words that are now missing from the text. If the students cannot remember what the words are, encourage them to try to work them out from the context of the sentence. Some of the words appear in the glossary, so to make the exercise more challenging you could ask the students not to use it.
