Welcome to the 2019 Invitation to View brochure. Our tours are the best, and usually only, way to see behind the closed doors of some of the country’s most fascinating places.

If you’re already familiar with what we offer, you’ll notice some changes. Invitation to View has become part of Historic Houses, the UK’s largest association of independently owned, lived-in, historic homes and gardens. You shouldn’t notice much difference to the tours themselves, but from our new home we will be able to offer, in the coming years, access to many

Historic Houses Invitation to View

more properties, in more parts of the country. In 2019 we start our expansion plans by including Yorkshire houses for the first time.

If you’re a member of Historic Houses, this new partnership means hundreds more tours to which you get privileged access in the form of discounted tickets and, where we anticipate tours will be popular, advance booking.

If you’re new to both organisations, welcome! We hope you enjoy taking a peek into the wonderful homes that tell our nation’s story.

How to Use this Book

Booking a TourHistoric Houses members must be logged in to our website when booking to take advantage of discounts. No refunds can be provided to members who book tours at the full price.

We’ve grouped our 2019 tours into four regions.

The East & London region, which can be found on pages 6 to 22, includes houses in London, Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Suffolk and Norfolk.

The South West region, from pages 26 to 30, covers Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Dorset and Hampshire.

The Central and Wales region, on pages 32 to 39, takes in Flintshire, Denbighshire, Powys, Monmouthshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, West Midlands, Herefordshire and Northamptonshire.

Our newest and smallest region, Yorkshire, appears on page 40 to 41.

Maps of these areas in this brochure show the approximate location of each property. Full directions will be sent with your tickets and can be found on houses’ profile pages on our website.

Participating properties are arranged, within their regions, in alphabetical order. We’ve summarised the dates on which each house offers tours in a list at the start of each section.

We have also provided a calendar, on pages 42 to 55, listing all our tours by month, so you can search by when you’re free as well as where you want to see.

Membership of Historic Houses starts from just £54 a year, and gives free access to more than 300 major historic homes and gardens across the UK that open on a regular basis as visitor attractions, from famous locations such as Highclere Castle, the setting for television’s ‘Downton Abbey’, and Althorp, childhood home of Diana, Princess of Wales, to hidden treasures like charming and ancient Forde Abbey in Dorset, or Gainsborough’s House in Suffolk, which boasts an impressive collection of the artist’s works.

Historic Houses members enjoy a 5% discount on all Invitation to View

Most Invitation to View tours are to just one location and the group is kept together, as well as shown around, by the owners of the house. But we do sometimes create our own tours, often to more than one location in a day, and we’re always on the lookout for previous tour attendees who live locally to help us by acting as a representative on the day.

Duties include welcoming other tour attendees as they arrive, making the group known to host properties or lunch venues and, if necessary, fielding questions

You can give the Invitation to View experience as a present using our gift vouchers. Redeemable at any time for a tour of the holder’s choice, they’re perfect for Christmas and birthdays. Please visit historichouses.org/tours to buy a voucher and redeem it either online or over the phone at 01946 690 823.

Are you a member of a group, club or association, or a commercial tour operator? If you’re not able to make the scheduled tour you want, we can organise bespoke visits for parties of a minimum size (usually ranging from 10 to 30, depending on the house) to almost all our participating properties, and other locations, on a mutually convenient date.

ticket prices, when booking online while logged in to the members’ section of historichouses.org.

New tours are regularly created during the year. They will be publicised on our website and in each quarterly edition of the Invitation to View supplement, distributed to all Historic Houses members with each issue of our magazine. Where we expect those tours to be popular, we will give our members the opportunity of early-bird booking to secure their places before the general public, while selected tours are reserved exclusively for members of Historic Houses.

or handling on-the-spot communication between our offices and the rest of the group.

On-the-day volunteers enjoy free attendance on the tours with which they’re helping. Volunteers keen for more involvement can progress to being member representatives, coming up with ideas of their own for successful tours and helping our staff to organise and run them.

If you’re interested in volunteering contact our Tours & Access Officer, Pat Jacobs, on [email protected] or 01284 827 087.

To view the list of places that welcome group tours, and to submit your request, go online to historichouses.org/tours or call 01284 827 087 to speak to our Tours & Access Officer, Pat Jacobs.

Bookings are confirmed only when payment has been received.

You must provide your full name and address when booking; we provide full lists of tour attendees to houses for security reasons.

You must provide a contact telephone number, and a mobile number if possible in case the tour needs to be cancelled at the last minute. Please also provide an email address you check regularly.

Please bring a print-out of your ticket with you or have it ready on your smart phone or device when you arrive, to show to the owner of the house.

We can only refund cancellations made at least two weeks before the tour. If you cancel later than that you may be able to exchange your tickets for a credit note (valid for twelve months) that can be used to book future tours, but we cannot guarantee places on any particular tour and you may lose your money. If the tour is cancelled by the house, for whatever reason and with whatever notice, you will get a full refund.

While we make every effort to avoid it, tours are occasionally cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. In such cases, Invitation to View cannot be held responsible for consequential losses such as the cost of travel or accommodation.

Conditions of BookingOur houses are frequently old and often fragile. Because of that, we regret that bookings for children under the age of 14 can only be taken with the home owner’s permission.

Photography is allowed only with the permission of the owners.
