Our Society offers a network that is filled with potential mentors with many years of experience in the different aspects of the scientific enterprise. Remember, we have members in all areas and levels of academia, industries and government agencies. The Triennial Convention is the place to be to meet these exceptional women and to network with them. Also, we take time to recognize and hear from the professional award winners. They are an inspiration for all of us. The majority of the business during the convention deals with reporting what National Council and chapters have accomplished over the last three years, and very importantly, discussing where to go in the next three years. Each person’s contributions are essential to help make decisions, provide new ideas and plan goals and strategies to ensure we continue to meet the objectives of Iota Sigma Pi. You will find on the registration form that each participant needs to select and rank three committees she is interested in joining. I’ll describe them here briefly, to help make choosing a little easier. Awards – Review the student and professional awards given by the society. Budget & Finance – Review the dues structure and set budget priorities. Membership Communications (a new committee!) Consider and evaluate all types of communications between the membership including The Iotan, the webpage, listservs, emails, mailings to chapters, etc. Chemical Awareness & Outreach Discuss the Speakers Bureau and other outreach activities pursued by members to enhance public knowledge of women in chemistry and science literacy. Audit Review the National Treasurer’s Triennial financial report. Chapter Program Development Review chapter vitality and national programs for chapters; suggest new ideas and strategies for chapter recruitment, retention, etc. Chapter Installations/Reactivations – (a new committee!) Help refine and improve guidelines for new chapters; discuss ideas to help chapters to be “metropolitan”. This committee arose because National has seen a renewed interest in many areas for new or reactivated chapters. Extension & Publicity – Review how we communicate to individuals outside of our membership. Discuss recruiting strategies for members and award nominations. Long Range Planning – Review the status of the organization and identify needs. Articulate long term goals and specific objectives to work towards. MAL – Review operations, discuss issues or ideas to improve member involvement, and choose the outstanding chapter award recipient. Resolutions – Assemble a list of acknowledgements for convention. Invitation to Convention from National President by Janet Clark, National President

The anticipation is growing among National Council and the Radium chapter in Cincinnati, Ohio! The Iota Sigma Pi 29th Triennial Convention, June 26 - 29, 2008 promises to be an exciting event as we meet to determine ways for our society to grow to meet today’s challenges. We need your input and help in growing the Society. Have you or your chapter decided who should attend? Now is the time! In this issue, you will find the registration form and more details regarding the convention. I encourage all of you to think about attending or sending delegates who will report back to your chapter with great interest.

Has your chapter been busy with outreach or professional development? What about yourself – any research or projects you would like to share? The convention kicks off with a Poster session on Thursday evening. Please consider submitting an abstract for your chapter or yourself. I can’t wait to hear what our members have been up to in the last three years!

I eagerly await the convention for many reasons, one of which is greeting old friends and meeting many new ones. My network overflows with Iota Sigma Pi contacts, but it can never have enough. Our Society offers a network that is filled with potential mentors with many years of experience in the different aspects of the scientific enterprise. Remember, we have members in all areas and levels of academia, industries and government agencies. The Triennial Convention is the place to be to meet these

exceptional women and to network with them.

Membership Communications – (a new committee!) Consider and evaluate all types of communications between the membership including The Iotan, the webpage, listservs, emails, mailings to chapters, etc. Chemical Awareness & Outreach – Discuss the Speakers Bureau and other outreach activities pursued by members to enhance public knowledge of women in chemistry and science literacy. Audit – Review the National Treasurer’s Triennial financial report.

Chapter Program Development – Review chapter vitality and national programs for chapters; suggest new ideas and strategies for chapter recruitment, retention, etc. Again, I can’t stress enough how critical your chapter’s participation is to help shape and guide us in the future. You have a voice in Iota Sigma Pi and we want to hear it! I look forward to seeing my old friends and establishing many more new ones while we enjoyably work towards great success of Iota Sigma Pi! Read on in this issue to find the details and registration information and I’ll see you in Cincinnati!

CHAPTER TRIENNIAL REPORTS DUE MAY 1!

It is time to submit your chapter's triennial report. The deadline for submission is May 1 and is usually earlier during a convention year. This will enable us sufficient time to forward the reports to the convention committee to place in the delegate's binders. I would like to have a report from each chapter, no matter what your chapter’s level of activity has been during the last 3 years. National Council, as well as other chapters, would like to hear about your activities and comments and/or concerns. Please, and most importantly, provide a current list of your chapter officers and their contact information. This information will be placed in the binders also and will be a good resource for chapters in contacting other chapters. Kathryn Louie Vice President

Join Us For Iota Sigma Pi’s 29th National Triennial Convention

June 26 – 29, 2008 by Yvonne Gagnon, Radium Chapter

The 29th Triennial Convention will be in Covington, KY across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, OH. The Cincinnati OH/Covington, KY area has many attractions and historic landmarks. Some attractions include the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Newport Aquarium, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the Cincinnati Museum Center (currently hosting the Bodies Exhibit), and Newport on the Levy which has many shops and restaurants and runs along the river. The major expenses for the delegates will be paid from the National Convention Fund. Delegates are encouraged to obtain the lowest price non-refundable coach fares with a Saturday night stay; reimbursement will be made at the convention. Prior permission from the National Treasurer, Margaret Workman, will be required for airline ticket reimbursement over $475.00. Double occupancy lodging is provided in the Convention Package; single rooms are available for a supplemental fee. The Convention Package does not include meals on Thursday, dinner on Saturday night, phone calls, and miscellaneous expenses. Chapters often provide their delegates with additional money to augment the convention package.

Alternate delegates may also be sent to the convention. Their expenses are the responsibility of the members themselves or the chapter, if the chapter so elects. All members are welcome to attend all or part of the convention at their own expense. Costs to non-delegates are outlined on the Registration Form; see form on pages 7 & 8 for details. We encourage all Iotans to participate in all activities, but only delegates may vote.

Each delegate will serve on one or two committees on Friday afternoon. Please indicate your preferences on your registration form. If no preferences are indicated, assignments will be made. Non-delegates may also participate on these committees and should indicate their desire to do so. These committees accomplish a great deal of work during the convention; of greatest importance, they evaluate our current status and set goals and action items for the national organization for the next triennium.

In addition to governance sessions and elections, eight national award winners will be recognized at the convention. The Friday evening award banquet is traditionally a dressy affair. Casual business attire is appropriate for most other events during the convention. Time has been set aside for sightseeing and social events. Please see the full convention agenda on page 6 for additional details.

Please help us keep up with you and your chapter by sending your new officer information to VP: Kathryn Louie. Send your list of new members for initiation to CIS - Reiko Simmons. Send your Change of Address to Records Chair Nancy Hopkins. In order for us to be a national organization, we need all of the chapters to help us help you by keeping contact information current. It is VERY important for chapters to update their officer information and for officers to update their addresses so that we can stay in contact. I sent out information and instructions at the beginning of this year to everyone we had listed as an officer in your chapter. If you are an officer and you didn't get one or you know someone who didn't get one, we didn't have your correct contact information. PLEASE help us, help you and send your new information. MAL Coordinator – Karen Knaus (MAL) Dr. Knaus earned her doctorate in clinical/bio-analytical chemistry at Cleveland State University. She then moved to Wisconsin for a postdoctoral fellowship in chemical education at the American Chemical Society’s Exams Institute. Dr. Knaus is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She would describe herself as an advocate for promoting positive changes in chemistry education as well as serving as a positive role model for other young women in chemistry through mentoring in both research and outreach.

Dr. Knaus has been a member of Iota Sigma Pi since her senior year as an undergraduate at Cleveland State. While a graduate student, she served as Vice President (2001–2005) and President (2005–2006) of the Fluorine chapter. In April of 2006, she received the Joan P. Lambros Outstanding Service Award for her years of service and dedication to the Fluorine chapter. Dr. Knaus has also served as a delegate to the Iota Sigma Pi national convention in the years 2002 & 2005.

Chapter News Anne Taylor from the Chlorine reported that the chapter is off to a great start in 2008! With 9 new members (all graduate students from LSU or Southern University), the group had a luncheon meeting in January, is making plans to give awards at the science fairs again, and are also working on a new service project with the Girls Scouts in Baton Rouge where they will lead science activities with a group of Brownies in the morning and Juniors in the afternoon. They will also be hosting dinner for visiting Iotans at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in New Orleans. For more information, please see the announcement on page 3. The Cobalt chapter (Indianapolis, IN) is hoping to reinvigorate their chapter this year! In addition to interest shown by members in yearly volunteering around National Chemistry Week and in support of the Indianapolis Girl’s Conference, they are looking into ways to stimulate the chapter through more regular volunteer activities and possible charitable fundraisers. Aurum chapter (Ames, IA) reported many professional, outreach, and social activities in their 2006-2007 annual report. Professional development activities included an academic interviewing panel that provided valuable insight into the job application and interview process from the side of the interviewee and a seminar on nanoscale surface chemistry by Dr. Cynthia Friend of Harvard University with a luncheon discussion on the discrepancies between the percentage of women acquiring degrees in scientific fields and the percentage of women being hired for academic positions. Outreach activities included demonstrations and hands-on activities for three elementary school science nights, the Connect after-school program for underprivileged children, and M.O.S.T., a program for the family members of deployed soldiers. Some of their other activities included an Aurum chapter team for the annual Des Moines Race for the Cure, participation in the Program for Women in Science and Engineering (PWSE) Career Conference, and garage sale & bake sale fundraisers.
