The Onyx occupies a strategic site on the Heerengracht, Cape Town’s oldest thoroughfare.The street was originally named Heerengracht, meaning ‘The Gentleman’s Canal’ in Dutch, after the canal or ‘gracht’ that ran down its centre, channeling the streams of Table Mountain down into Table Bay.
For many years the street was residential in nature, lined with large oak trees, but by 1850 it had become the commercial spine of the city, linking the fine shops and stately banks of the Mother CIty with the grand old Cape Town Pier, and the thoroughfare was renamed Adderley Street. After the reclamation of the Foreshore began in 1938 however, the lower part of the street was given its original name once more.
The harbour-end of the Heerengracht, culminating in a formal circular park, has recently seen a major capital investment in the development of several significant new buildings, namely the Cape Town International Convention Centre and its extension, and the newly
completed Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital. Older buildings on the Heerengracht, such as Media 24 and the Standard Bank building, have also recently been radically refurbished to create a pristine precinct of contemporary corporate architecture on a grand scale, gleaming with glass and bold, simple structures, housing the head offices of many financial institutions and legal firms. The success of the CTICC, the setting for constantly changing conventions, exhibitions and concerts, has brought new life to the precinct, and seen the establishment of many new hotels, whose guests enjoy an easy walk to the ever popular V&A Waterfront. Today, water flows once more down the formal canal running through the centralised traffic circle. And through The Onyx, residents will return to this grand old boulevard, re-energising the streets with pedestrian life, and infusing the restaurants, coffee shops and theatres with new customers.

This grand, broad boulevard with its wide circles, expansive public spaces and formal green parks

The world’s first glass and steel skyscrapers
were made real by international architect Mies
van der Rohe with his iconic 1958 Seagrams
Building in Manhattan, and his 1951 Lakeshore
Drive Apartments in Chicago. Revolutionary in
the simplicity of their facades, they stunningly
embody Mies’ now universally accepted design
axiom: ‘less is more.’
His black glass box signature became known as
‘The International Style’ and is a design meme
that spread to sophisticated cities around the
world, including Cape Town, where Nedbank’s
elegant 1968 Foreshore head office is now
being transformed into The Onyx. Fifty years on,
this impressive edifice with its unbroken black
glass curtain holds its own as a 20th century
design landmark.
According to Robert Silke, the architect tasked
with transforming this gleaming office block
into a mixed-use building for residential and
hospitality use, “The shallow floor plates and
large expanses of glass make this A-grade
corporate icon perfect for residential conversion.
“We’re going to surgically intervene in the
façcade with futuristic and curvaceous
aluminium balconies. In so doing, we’ll be
animating the striking black onyx surfaces with
luxurious, yacht-like feature terraces in crisp white.”

Robert Silke & Partners is an award-winning firm
of architects and interior designers specialising
in the commercial, hospitality and residential
sector. Based in Cape Town, the practice
presently works in Johannesburg, Durban
and as far afield as Kitwe, Zambia and Accra,
Ghana.
The firm was established in 2015 as a
partnership between Robert Silke and Robert
McGiven, young architects who combine
no less than 30 years collective experience
designing and managing some of South
Africa’s major architectural projects.
Robert Silke is one of South Africa’s most prolific
young architects, having recently completed
Citadel’s striking new granite head office in
Claremont, Cape Town.
As senior partner in charge of design at Louis
Karol Architects (2001-2015) Silke designed
Chevron’s award-winning new national
headquarters in Century City, as well as the
futuristic Point shopping centre in Cape Town’s

He is well known for his residential conversion
of Old Mutual’s former Art Deco headquarters
in the Cape Town CBD – and is widely credited
as the catalyst for turning around the fortunes
of Cape Town’s city centre. His past work
includes design for the reconstruction of Blue
Route Mall, seven Holiday Inn hotels, the H&M
installation at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront,
and pivotal roles in Cape Town’s FIFA 2010
Stadium – as well as Portside, Cape Town’s
