    1. KYRGYZSTAN: AN OVERVIEW

    1.1 Geography

    TheKyrgyzRepublicislocatedinCentralAsiaandhasanareaof199thousandsquarekilometres,or77,540squaremiles.Thislandlockednationstretches900kmeasttowestand410kmnorthto south.

    TheKyrgyzRepublicisamountainouscountrywith94.2%ofitsterritorylocated1,000metresand40.8%located3,000metresabovesea.Theaverageheightabovesealevelis2,750metres,thehighest point is 7,439 metres, and the lowest point is 401 metres1.TheKyrgyzRepublicbordersKazakhstantothenorth,Uzbekistantothesouth-west,Tajikistantothesouth,andChinatotheeastand south-east2.

    Theclimateiscontinental;airtemperaturevariesfrom-40inthewinterto+40inthesummer.Thelandscapeincludesallnaturalzonescommonforthenorthernhemisphere,exceptthetropics.Therepublicisoneofthe20countrieswiththerichestwaterresourcesintheworld.

    By its administrative and territorial system the Kyrgyz Republic belongs to unitary states and consists of7oblasts(Regions),(Chui,Issyk-Kul,Talas,Naryn,Jalalabat,OshandBatken)and2citiesofna-tionalstatus(BishkekandOsh).ThecapitaloftheKyrgyzRepublicisBishkek.

    1.2 History

    Thefirststatesappearedwithintheterritoryofthepresent-dayKyrgyzRepublicinthe2ndcenturyB.C.ThemostancienthistoricaldocumentsonKyrgyzstatehoodwerewrittenbyawell-knownChi-nese historian and chronicler Sim Xian that dates back to 201 B.C.3

    By the late 7th to early 8thcenturyA.D.theKyrgyzpeoplehadbecomeasignificantforcerespectedby the powerful nations of Central Asia, and by the fourth decade of the 9th century they founded avastnomadicempireknownastheKyrgyzKaganate.Thetraditionalandculturalbackgroundofthe Kyrgyz people and the ethnonym Kyrgyz, which is interpreted by the Kyrgyz people themselves as forty maidens, each a traditional ancestress of a family line, support the assumption that the Kyrgyz Kaganate consisted of 40 tribes.

    Between 1870 and 1880 the territory of Kyrgyzstan became part of the Russian Empire. In 1918, KyrgyzstanbecamepartoftheTurkestanAutonomousSovietSocialistRepublicoftheRussianSovietFederative Socialist Republic. As a result of the State Division of Soviet Central Asian Republics, in 1924,theKaraKyrgyz(since1925Kyrgyz)AutonomousRegionwasestablishedwithintheRussianSovietFederativeSocialistRepublic;in1926,theterritorywastransformedintotheKyrgyzAutono-mous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and in 1936 intotheKyrgyzSovietSocialistRepublicwithintheUnionofSovietSocialistRepublics4.

    In 1991, Kyrgyzstan proclaimed itself an independent and sovereign state known as the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, and since the 5thofMay,1993,ithasbeenofficiallynamedastheKyrgyzRepublic.

    1.3 Population and Language

    As of the 1st of March, 2013, the Kyrgyz Republic had a population of a little over 5 million 680.2 thousand people5.ThedensityofthepopulationintheKyrgyzRepublicis28peoplepersquarekilo-metre. About 90 nationalities live in the country. As of the beginning of 2012, the indigenous people, theKyrgyz,represent72.2%,theUzbeks14.43%,andtheRussians6.9%ofthepopulation.

    Thepermanentpopulationofthecountryascomparedtothesameperiodlastyear(5,571.2thou-sandpeopleasofMarch1,2012)increasedby109thousandpeople,or2.0percent.

    ThenationallanguageoftheKyrgyzRepublicisKyrgyz,whiletheofficiallanguageisRussian.Bothlanguagesarebeingusedonequaltermsandareemployedforadministrativepurposes;however,under the legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic6, the Kyrgyz version of a document is considered to be its originalversion.Initsofficialrelationswithforeignnations(receptions,meetings,developmentandratificationofdocuments)theKyrgyzRepublicusesthenationallanguage,whileinrelationswiththeCIScountriesitalsousestheofficiallanguage.

    1.4 Links to Other Countries

    Therelativelysmallsizeofthecountrymakestravelwithiniteasy.Aflightfromthenorthtothesouthof the country lasts about one hour.

    ThetotallengthofroadsintheKyrgyzRepublicis34,000km,including18,810kmforgeneraluseroadsmaintainedby theroadunitsof theKyrgyzMinistryofTransportandCommunicationsand15,190 km roads of cities, villages, agricultural, industrial and other enterprises.
