Feliciano G. Calora, Jr., also well-known as Jofel to his peers, is one of the four sons of Dr. Feliciano Banaag Calora, Sr. and Delia Almario Galvez who are both from the province of Laguna and are currently based in Los Banos.
Feliciano Galvez calora, Jr.SIXTH UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Born on May 20, 1959, Dr. Calora pursued his baccalaureate, masters and doctorate studies in Forestry at the University of the Philippines Los Banos in Laguna. He primarily gained his inspiration and influence from his parents, especially from his father, who is a former Professor of Entomology at the same university and the first national taxonomist of butterflies in the Philippines.
His reverence to the natural environment led him to take on his first job as a Company Forester of Basey Wood Industries after graduating with a degree in BS Foresty and gaining his license as a registered forester in 1981. He then went to continue with his graduate studies specializing in Watershed Management and Silviculture, and decided to become a teacher at the College of Forestry at the Benguet State University (BSU) in February of 1985. Incidentally, his youngest brother, Michael, was also studying at Saint Louis University during this time. Dr. Calora was enticed with the opportunity to work in La Trinidad with its cool weather, picturesque environment and peaceful people.
Dr. Calora became a reputable professor at BSU for 26 years and was known by his students to be intelligent and uncompromising in the quality of his students’ performance. His dedication to serve and unquestionable capacity to lead landed him administrative positions as the Dean of the

College of Forestry, Director for Planning and Development and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He was designated as chair or member of various committees for faculty selection, bids and awards, and merit evaluation. While he was carrying out his responsibilities in these positions, he strived to create, innovate and develop working environments that will bring the best out of people – his management style that he held on to throughout his career. Central to his principle is the belief that professional development leads to the progress of an institution.
In 2012, Dr. Calora was given another opportunity to serve as the Director of the Forestry and Environment Research at the national office of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources and Development (PCAARRD). Concurrently, he held positions as the Chairman of the Function Audit, Vice Chairman of the Bids and Awards Committee and Member of the PCAARRD Citizen’s Charter Task Force. Dr. Calora was research manager of projects on strategic research and development, capacity building, technology transfer and policy advocacy and research governance
on rubber, cacao, industrial tree plantations, bamboo, biodiversity, watershed management, mangrove rehabilitation and climate change. His inter-agency collaborations included his designation as the country representative to the World Agroforestry Center-Alternatives to Slash and Burn- Global Steering Committee and the Department of Science and Technology-PCAARRD Climate Change Focal Person.
With Dr. Calora’s richer knowledge gained from his years of experience in management, research and education, he has come back to the Benguet State University, this time as President, to fulfill his passion of serving in the academe and work with colleagues in achieving BSU’s mission to serve communities and the country.
Despite his track-record in his career, Dr. Calora describes himself as “a regular, simple guy with his feet always on the ground who always looks at all options before making any decision.” Together with his late wife Carmen, an orthodontist who succumbed to cancer at the young age of 41, Dr. Calora is blessed with two sons and a daughter with whom he enjoys playing basketball and eating out as a family.

Symbolsof
OfficeThe university mace is a symbol of authority and imprinted upon it is the university seal.
Based on the BSU Code, the seal presents the following elements: a circle with four (4) sub-circles representing the four-fold functions of the institutions with rice terraces at the foreground (identity for the Cordillera) and the sun for the background as the ultimate energy source for all life forms.
The space forming the outside circle shall bear the inscription “Benguet state university” and “1916” at the bottom, separated by two dots (top view of “addongan” beads).
THE MACE
PRODUCTIONis found at the base of the seal with rice terraces for its background. At the foreground is a stylized agricultural land leading into an arch culminating its perspective towards a symbolic pine. Meaning, that highland agricultural production is inextricably linked with the forest ecosystem.
INSTRUCTION occupies the top most portion of the seal represented by a lamp with flames and a book for the pursuit of truth, bordered by leaves to symbolize growth
RESEARCHis represented by a sub-circle at the left portion of the seal with a silhouette of a microscope against a background of computer screen and keyboard representing the two major discoveries of man that enable him to probe deeper into the realm of scientific knowledge
EXTENSIONis represented at the right portion with two distinct grouping of people – that form the University and the heterogeneous community with Cordillera architecture forming the background
The four sub-circles have the following representations and meanings:

It started as the La Trinidad Farm School with 30 grade V pupils in 1916. The Farm School expanded its services and heightened its prominence in La Trinidad. According to earlier reports, the Farm School was “planned to develop into a large normal school where the best Igorot pupils will be trained to be teachers among their own people with emphasis on agriculture.”
In 1920, the farm school was elevated as the Trinidad Agricultural School with 188 students enrolled in first year high school. Re-opening after the war in 1946, the school became the La Trinidad Agricultural High School. Four years later, a provincial normal curriculum was abolished in 1953 and a two-year post-high school certificate in agricultural education was offered.
The school was renamed La Trinidad National Agricultural School (LTNAS). After four months, it was nationalized and named the Mountain National Agricultural School. (MNAS). It was soon converted into the Mountain National College (MNAC); Mountain Agricultural College (MAC); and eventually, the Mountain State Agricultural College (MSAC) in 1969 through RA 5923.
On January 12, 1986, the college was converted to a state university by virtue of Presidential Decree (PD) No. 2010 signed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
At present BSU is awarded SUC Level IV, the highest category in the SUC leveling classification of State Universities and Colleges by the Commission on Higher Education. BSU’s College of Teacher Education was awarded as Center of Excellence in Teacher Education while the College of Agriculture and College of Home Economics and Technology were awarded as Centers of Development for Agriculture, and Nutrition and Dietetics, respectively.
Benguet State University is nestled in the heart of La Trinidad, Benguet, the strawberry capital of the Philippines.

INVESTITURE COFFEE TREES
The Arabica is one of the four commercial coffee varieties and is best grown under tree cover in places with cool weather. Benguet is one of the few provinces in the country that produces Arabica which is the most aromatic of all coffee varieties.
As part of Dr. Calora’s advocacy to plant trees, more Arabica seedlings were planted on BSU’s coffee plantation at the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry situated at Ampasit, Longlong, La Trinidad. To symbolically show support to BSU and the incoming president in his advocacies on environmental sustainability and to mark their participation in the investiture, a coffee seedling will be assigned to each guest.
The guests will have the honor to harvest from their trees after four years when the coffee produces its berries.
Coffee has been embedded in the Philippine culture and is a staple in the daily lives of Filipinos.
