One night, screaming alarms go off and you must exit your home immediately, only grabbing what you can as you run out the door and down the steps to the parking lot. You turn around to see flames coming out of your neighbor’s window. As you watch the fire trucks roll in and the flames start to extinguish, you learn that you will not be able to return to your apartment. What would happen to you and your family?

This is how Takisha, her husband, and four kids found themselves homeless. At first they stayed in temporary housing, but Takisha lost her job while dealing with the aftermath of the fire and they soon lost their temporary housing. They had nowhere to go. This family connected with MSC, and through our programs in housing, energy assistance, and food bank, they are once again stable. Because of your support MSC was there to help this family.

THE CHALLENGE: We can all see that South King County suburban communities have experienced an increase in the number of individuals living in poverty over the past decade. Due to the current health conditions, this year’s event will be virtual. We will host a live-stream event with a similar format to the in-person event on Thursday, October 15, 2020, from 12-1pm.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Caylin Moore, an author and inspirational speaker, will share his journey of overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles to striving to leave the world better than he found it. Hear his against-odds journey from the cruel poverty of a gang-ridden Los Angeles community to becoming a Rhodes Scholar.

HELP, HOPE, CHANGE AWARD: Each year, MSC presents the Help, Hope, Change Award at the MSC Helps Luncheon which celebrates a community leader or corporation that exemplifies the mission of MSC, to provide pathways out of poverty for our neighbors. This year’s honoree is Jeanne Burbidge. former Federal Way Mayor and Council member as well as community advocate.

About MSCMSC is a respected social services agency with a network of community and governmental partners and contributors from all sectors. As one of the largest non-profit social service providers in South King County, MSC offers people pathways out of poverty through support and resources in education, employment, housing, energy assistance, food, and clothing. We also provide statewide advocacy for elderly and disabled residents of long-term care facilities. Started as a grassroots organization in 1971 with neighbors helping neighbors, MSC now serves more than 40,000 individuals each year.
