INVERTEBRATES
Animals that don’t have a backbone are called invertebrates.
They can live in many different habitats: water, soil, air..
Some of them, such as jellyfish and worms have no protection for their soft bodies.
Others, such as snails and clams, have a soft body inside a hard shell.
What is an invertebrate? (GAME)http://www.butterflyschool.org/student/invertgame.html
Think of some animals that live in water, soil or air and don't have a backbone…
WATER SOIL AIR
SPONGES
No mouth, stomachs, or other organs
Most live in oceans Cannot move They stink a lot They filter the water to
eat They can grow back
any broken part.
Experiment with sponges
We touch, see and smell two species of sponges. We describe and draw them. We have to make a hypothesis about what would
happen to them if they are introduced in water They will grow… They will be heavier… They will floate…. They will stink more…. They will absorb all the water….
We introduce the sponges inside the water and observe the changes. We describe the changes.
CNIDARIANS: INVERTEBRATES WITH STINGING CELLS
They have tentacles
They have a mouthThey live on the
ocean floorThey shoot
poisonous darts
jellyfish
Sea anemone
coral
WORMS
They can grow back parts if they lose parts.
Some worms can grow to 30 METERS long
An earthworm has hairs on it to help it go through the dirt!!!
Flatworm
Segmented
Roundworms
ECHINODERMS: INVERTEBRATES WITH SPINY SKINS
They have bodies with at least 5 sections.
They have suction cup feet to walk
They use tubes to catch food.starfish
Sea urchinSea cucumber
MOLLUSK: INVERTEBRATES WITH SOFT BODIES
They live on land, fresh water and ocean water.
Some make shells from minerals in the water.
Two shelled mollusks have a big foot to pull themselves along.
squid
snail
octopus
Clammussel
ARTHROPODS: ANIMALS WITH ARTICULATED LEGS
THERE ARE 4 GROUPS
ARTHOPODS
They have keen sense organs They have exoskeletons. They have two or more segments
CRUSTACEANS
They have 5 pairs of legs
They live near or on the ocean floor
Live on land and water
They have antennae
crab
shrimplobster
ARACHNIDS
Spiders, mites and ticks.
4 pairs of legs Most live on land. Some live in fresh
water They are called
parasites.
SPIDER
MITES
TICK
INSECTS
Largest group of arthropods
3 pairs of legs 3 main body part
sections Compound eyes Have mouths
fly
beetle
grasshopper
butterfly
MILLIPEDES & CENTIPEDES
Many body segments Live under rocks &
dark places Really have less than
100 legs Protects itself by
curling up Millipedes have 4 legs
on each segment Centipedes have 2
legs on each segment
