Inver Grove Heights Community Schools has chosen to reduce a plan to improve facilities through a bond proposal by more than $6 million. The referendum request, as approved by the board, will be for a $24,750,000 million dollar bond to be paid back over 19 years. The average homeowner in Inver Grove Heights ($184,000) would pay $6.42/month through their property taxes. The question will be placed on the November 5 ballot.

The district focus remains on improving learning environments that provide for high student achievement. Inver Grove Heights students have received numerous state and national awards at multiple levels during the past few years, and the district would like to continue to offer them every chance to excel their learning.

The year-long facilities study showed needs in the areas of safety, academics, arts and athletics. The district created a plan to strengthen each of these areas so that students would be safer and have greater opportunities to maximize their learning potential. The original plan required $31 million. That plan was modified and the amount reduced after a survey commissioned by the district revealed the community understands the need and supports the request at a cost of approximately $7, or less, per month.

Currently, the entrances to Salem Hills Elementary School and Simley High School are not up to current standard. Salem Hills has a vestibule area at its entrance, but there is a wall blocking the line of sight from the office to the vestibule. This poses a potential safety concern when visitors enter the building. Office personnel need to see who they are allowing access to the building. Simley High School also has an entryway problem. It is the only school in the district where visitors do not enter the main office upon entry. In order to create a secure vestibule, Simley’s main office would need to be moved from the rear of the building to the entryway. Secure entrances at both of these buildings would increase student safety.

199 ReporterThe district has some learning spaces that are outdated. They are used but were created for learners of a different generation. The district’s plan transforms these spaces into current learning areas and updates to the media arts areas so students can collaborate with each other in a variety of formats. The updated spaces would create an environment suitable for today’s and student learning needs.

A multi-purpose performing arts center at Simley would seat more of the student body and give the Theatre Guild a performance space that is properly lit and equipped for sound. Currently, there are no dressing rooms for the theatre, which creates issues during performances. The performing arts center would be used for performance and expression classes during the school day. The new performing arts center could also be used for elementary performances and community events.

There are many safety issues within the Simley High School athletic facilities. The track is crumbling has not been used for competition in two years. All Simley track meets must be held off-site. Other stadium upgrades would allow for maximized use for high school sports, youth programs and community events.

The district’s plan also calls for completing many deferred maintenance projects. Old roofs, windows and HVAC equipment throughout the district that are severely worn need to be repaired. In all, deferred maintenance projects comprise 28-percent of the proposal.
