Inventor of the Telephone
• Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland in 1847. He moved to Canada with his parents in 1870.
• As a young man he worked as a teacher, teaching deaf children to speak.
• Throughout his life he was interested in how things worked and was always inventing things.
The Telephone
• We looked at how the telephone works.
• Class 3 also used a tin can telephone to investigate whether the length of the string affected the sound travelling along it.
Tetrahedrons
Bell was very interestedin the structure oftetrahedrons and usedthem a lot in hisinventions. Class 3 werechallenged to make 4triangles from 6 sticks.A tetrahedron was thesolution.
Kites
Bell was also veryinterested in flying andmade lots of kites. Heused his ideas abouttetrahedrons andincorporated them in hiskite designs. Class 3made 2 kites constructedfrom tetrahedrons.
Kites 2
We took our kites out onto the field to try and fly them. Just like Mr. Bell our kites need more work before they fly properly!
The Silver Dart
When Bell’s kites startedgetting bigger and flyingbetter, he turned his mindto inventing aeroplanes. Hismost successful one wascalled the Silver Dart. Thisplane first flew in February1909, and took off from afrozen lake in Nova Scotia,Canada. Class 3 recreatedthe scene in a big picture.
