In tr odu ct ion This training will illustrate how to perform InfoEd Keyword and Advanced funding opportunity searches and how to subscribe to receive e-mail alerts using the InfoEd Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN). The training content assumes familiarity with SPIN and how to perform “basic” searches. The advantage of advanced SPIN searches is the ability to use keywords, terms or phrases with greater specificity, thereby deriving more precise results. For example, the user may be searching for opportunities containing the word “Ocean”. SPIN’s Keyword Search enables the user to include additional words such as “water,” “shipping,” or “marine life” to expand or narrow the search. 1. Log into InfoEd a. This training will illustrate how to perform InfoEd Keyword and Advanced funding opportunity searches and how to subscribe to receive e-mail alerts using the InfoEd Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN).

The training content assumes familiarity with SPIN and how to perform “basic” searches. If unfamiliar with SPIN, please refer to “S P I N /S M AR TS/ G E N I US F A Q ’ s ” and review “Basic SPIN Searches” at the UNH S P IN T r aining M o dul e s before continuing.

The advantage of advanced SPIN searches is the ability to use keywords, terms or phrases with greater specificity, thereby deriving more precise results. For example, the user may be searching for opportunities containing the word “Ocean”. 1. Log into InfoEd

a. Go to https://in f o e d re s ea r c h.unh. e du/lo g in . a sp .b. Enter your UNH Blackboard or AD username and password, then click “Login”.

i. If you don’t recall your Blackboard credentials, contact the UNH Helpdesk at x2- 4242 for assistance.

ii. Still can’t log into InfoEd after resetting you Blackboard credentials? Send an e-mail to R I T Suppo r t .

2. Open the SPIN application

a. Click “Find Funding” in the upper menu bar. A new window will open.

3. Set your search preferences

a. Hover your mouse over “Search” and select “InfoEd Keyword Search”.

b. Hover over “Preferences” in the menu bar and select one of the options listed in the second section of the dropdown menu.

c. Set each of your preferences using the resulting pop-up window.i. Advanced searches automatically invoke inflectional forms of the entered words. For

example, a search for “test” will scan the SPIN database for: test, tests, tested, and testing.

ii. Check “Use Search Text Synonyms” to pass the entered search terms through an integrated thesaurus, potentially expanding the terms being searched. For example, a search for cancer will scan the SPIN database for: cancer, carcinogens, chemotherapy, tumors, oncology, and other related terms.

iii. Click the SPIN Logo in the upper left corner of the screen to start over at any time and refresh the window.

iv. When finished, click “Save and Exit”.

4. Use the keyword search function

a. From the main screen click on “Select Keywords”

b. Search for Keywords using the “Available Keywords” menu and add selected keywords to the “Chosen Keywords” menu using the arrow buttons. The single right arrow button adds a single selection where the double right arrow button adds all possible selections. The single left arrow button removes a selection from the “Chosen Keywords” menu where the double left arrow button removed all keywords from the “Chosen Keywords” menu. You can expand all items in the “Available” keywords menu by clicking the “Expand” button and can hide all expanded items by hitting the “Collapse” button. The search field in the upper left can be used to query keywords from the “Available Keywords” menu. Queried keywords can then be added by clicking the “Select” button to the right of the search field.

c. When you have finished selecting keywords click “Save Selections and Continue”.

5. Search Using Selected Keywords

a. Click on “Locate Funding” to perform a search using the selected Keywords.

b. You can select the filter icon to the left of each column name to further modify the search. You can also drag a column header to the above field to group results by that column.

c. You can view more details for an opportunity by clicking the details checkbox.

6. Build and Execute an “Advanced” SPIN Search

a. Hover the mouse over “Search” to expand the menu and select “Advanced Search”.

b. Click the “Add Expression” dropdown box next to the word “AND”. A “Full Program” branch will be added to the logic tree.

c. Under “Full Program”, select one of the available fields. Some fields will populate a drop down box with a list of items while others provide only the search field.

d. Selecting the “Add Group” item found next to “Add Expression” allows you to add even more criteria for advanced searches.

7. Saving your search as an email alerta. Click the “Save” button found next to the “Locate Funding” button.b. In the pop-up, give your search an easily identifiable name.c. To receive automated alerts when future opportunities meeting your criteria are added

to SPIN database:i. Set the “Receive email updates?” to “HTML”.ii. In the “Update frequency” menu, select your preference for “Daily” or “Weekly” alerts. Select the frequency you want to receive the alerts (“Daily” or “Weekly”).

(a) Alerts are sent to your GENIUS Profile e-mail address.iii. Save your changes.

8. Retrieve your saved search

a. At any time you are logged in, mouse over “Saved Searches” in the top menu bar and click on “Manage Saved Searches”.

b. The window will present available searches.i. You can share, or delete saved searches.

c. Re-run searches by clicking the green arrow under “Run” in the left column.

d. When finished using SPIN, click on the “Sign Out” link in the top right section of the screen. Otherwise, your next SPIN login may be locked.
