Undergraduate Research Programs on Campus 32nd Annual Research Competition INTRODUCTION TO THE OURS NEWSLETTER What is the OURS?: The Office of Undergraduate Research Services (OURS), established in 2016, is charged with expanding under- graduate research opportunities to the California State University, Long Beach student body. OURS works in collaboration with staff and faculty in all CSULB Colleges, Divisions and units to cultivate strong relationships in support of undergraduate research. What we do at OURS: e Office of Undergraduate Research Services serves as a central place for CSULB students, faculty and campus partners to learn about undergraduate research opportunities. Undergraduate Research Programs at OURS: The Office of Undergraduate Research Services houses the OURS Connects, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, and the McNair Scholars program while working in collaboration with programs across campus. Contact information: Phone: (562) 985-7754 Email: [email protected] Student Success Center, Suite 120 California State University, Long Beach UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMS ON CAMPUS BISC: Biotechnology Internships in Stem Cell research (BISC) trains advanced bachelors, post-baccalau- reate, and master’s students in the theory and tech- niques of stem cell research for the development of therapies. CHAAT: Center for Human Factors in Advanced Aeronautics Technologies at California State University, Long Beach researches the impacts of future automated tools and new operating concepts on human opera- tors in our National Airspace System. ANDALE Scholars Program: e Advancing Nutrition Development through Alliances for Education and Leadership (ÁNDALE) Scholars Program aims to support undergraduate students in nutrition, health sciences, and kinesiolo- gy at CSULB and CSUMB. BUILD: e CSULB BUILD Program offers intensive, hands-on research and training opportunities for undergraduate students designed to prepare them to excel in doctoral programs and health-related research careers. HSI: e Hispanic Serving Institutions – Science Tech- nology, Engineering, and Math Program:supports first-generation Latina/o students successfully pur- sue graduate degrees and careers in STEM fields. LSAMP: e Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program at California State University Long Beach is part of the statewide effort to enhance the math and science skills of students who have faced or face social, educational, or economic barri- ers, and are majoring in science, technology, engi- neering, or mathematics (STEM). MARC U*STAR: e mission of the Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (U*STAR) program is to increase diversity in biomedical research by identi- fying students interested in pursuing research as a career at an early stage. McNair: e Ronald E. McNair Post baccalaureate Achieve- ment Program is a TRiO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education and designed to prepare and support historically underrepresented students in undergraduate research and the pursuit of doctor- al studies. MMUF: e Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowshipv slects a cohort of fellows join the previously selected co- horts of rising and graduating senior fellows, where they are provided with mentoring and financial support as they prepare for entry into PhD programs and eventual careers as scholars and faculty members. OURS Connects: e OURS Connects is a program that offers all un- dergraduate students the chance to participate in the research and creative process with faculty as volun- teer research assistants. RISE: e Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program is designed to support motivated students interested in developing careers as profes- sional research scientists in biomedical and behav- ioral science fields. UROP: e Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) is a one-year paid research program that facilitates undergraduate research partnerships with CSULB faculty sponsors engaged in research, schol- arly, and creative activities. COUNCIL ON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH What is Council on Undergraduate Research? e Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), founded in 1978, is an organization of individual, institution- al, and affiliate members from around the world. CUR members share a focus on providing high-quality and collaborative undergraduate research, scholarly, and creative activity opportunities for faculty and students. CUR believes that faculty members enhance their teaching and contribution to society by remaining active in research and by involving undergraduates in research, and that students engaged in undergraduate research succeed in their studies and professional advancement taken from CUR’s website. Free Membership for all Students, Staff, and Faculty All California State University, Long Beach students and faculty, members are able to register as a member of CUR with no cost to you. CUR memberships are designed to assist students, staff, faculty and researches in their efforts to develop, enhance, and support undergraduate research. By being a member of CUR, members are connected to a diverse network of researchers across the nation and around the world. Sign up for your free CUR membership. NCUR 2020 Every year, CUR supports the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research, a three-day conference hosted in March or April which gathers student scholars from colleges and universities across the country to present their scholarly work. This year’s annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research will be hosted by Montana State University. The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday, December 6, 2019. Apply here! NCUR 2021 – At the Beach! CUR has selected California State University, Long Beach to host of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in April 2021. CSULB will partner with CSU Fullerton, Dominguez Hills, Los Angeles, Northridge, and Cal Poly Pomona for this very special event. Benefits to students include exposure to research on a national scale as presenters, attendees, and students, as well as have the opportunity to network among their peers. This event also provides CSULB and its sister campuses with recognition as student-centered institutions with a deep commitment to undergraduate research. ANNUAL CSULB STUDENT RESEARCH COMPETITION What is the Student Research Competition? The purpose of the 32nd Annual CSULB Student Research Competition is to showcase excellence in scholarly research, and highlight creative activity conducted by CSULB undergraduate and graduate students. e Student Research Competition will feature oral presentations to an audience of fellow students, university community members, and a jury of distinguished faculty. Who can participate? Undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled at CSULB, as well as alumni/alumnae who receive their degrees in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2019, are eligible. Research and/or creative activities presented should be appropriate to the student’s discipline and career goals. Proprietary research is excluded. Rules and Guidelines: e paper summary should not exceed five double-spaced pages in length, not including appendices. Appendices (bibliography, graphs, photographs, or other supplementary materials) should not exceed three pages. File size should not exceed 25mb. To apply visit the 2020 SRC application page. Deadline to apply is December 2, 2019. Competition Format: e competition will take place on Friday, Feb- ruary 21, 2020. e format is intended to resem- ble a professional academic meeting and exactly replicates the setting of the statewide competi- tion. Each student will have five minutes to set up their computer for the PowerPoint presen- tation, ten minutes for an oral presentation and five minutes to respond to questions.
