Taking the land Remaining in the land
Unity Division
Submitted to the Law Broke the Law
Central leader under Joshua No central leader
Progress Decline
Freedom Bondage
Sin judged Sin tolerated
United thru the Tabernacle No Tabernacle worship
The general idea of 3:7 - 16:31
in the book of Judges
From 3:7 - 16:31 there are a number of cycles of narratives which describe Israel’s history. This
history follows a general pattern:
Sin - Israel failing to keep the Law
Servitude - God sending discipline in the form of a foreign invader
Supplication - Israel’s cry for deliverance from the invader
Salvation - God’s gracious reply in sending a deliver (judge) to rally Israel to victory and to the
Law.
This entire section shows a number of things:
1. Israel suffered under foreign domination because they did not obey God in wiping out the
Canaanites.
2. The fruit of disobedience is discipline.
3. Idolatry is always followed by immorality (cf. Rom. 1:18-32)
4. There was no unity among the tribes
5. Israel’s enemies were from all the quarters of the land indication that disobedience was
widespread and no part of the land was untouched by unfaithfulness.
6. It clearly demonstrated that there was the need for a king whose authority would be recognized
throughout the land. A perpetual kingship had to be established.
