Introduction to the Fifty Day Journal

This is a Fifty Day Journal on the Book of Colossians with the theme “Christ is

All and All I Need”. Please use this journal to enrich your own spiritual journey.

There is a devotional for each section of Colossians as well as a weekly memory

verse. By the end of the fifty days you will know the book of Colossians. Don’t be

discouraged if you miss a day or two. Just pick up on the day and try and catch up

later.

Having a consistent Quiet Time is one of the areas most believers struggle with.

For the maximum opportunity for success, let me encourage you to do the

following three things:

1. Pick a period. When can you and God get together for 15-20 minutes of

uninterrupted time? The same time every day will result in consistency and

will form a habit in your life.

2. Pick a place. Where can you get together with God without distractions?

This should be a fairly quiet place where you can be alone.

3. Pick a partner. We all need someone to keep us accountable. Who can

check up on you and help you to keep going with devotional.

Why not settle these three matters before going any further.

My daily appoint with God will be from ________________ to _____________

at/in ________________________and ____________________________ will be

checking up on me to keep me accountable.

May God richly bless us as we travel this road together.

In His Service,

Dr. David A. Watson

Fifty Days of “Christ Is All and All I Need”

Day 1

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians Chapters 1-4

As you read, circle the name “Jesus”, “Christ”, “Lord” and “Him” when it refers to Jesus.

Write down questions that come to mind as you read.

Today’s Quote: “When we study Paul’s epistles we see that each has a dominant theme. In

Romans, it is justification by faith. In Ephesians, it is the mystery of Christ and his Church. In

Philippians, it is the joy which Christ brings. In Colossians, it is the absolute supremacy and

sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the Head of all creation and of the Church. There is no book in the

New Testament, including John’s Gospel, which presents such a comprehensive picture of the

fullness of Christ.” - R Kent Hughes in Preaching the Word, Colossians and Philemon, The

Supremacy of Christ

This week’s Memory Verse: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you

are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” - Colossians 2:9-10

So… what’s it to me? - As a result of today’s study I am going to …

Day 2

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians Chapters 1-4

As you read, circle the phrase “In Christ”, “In Christ Jesus” and “In Him”.

Below, list the verses that contain these phrases.

Today’s Quote: “Look on thine own nothingness; be humble, but look at Jesus, thy great

representative, and be glad. It will save thee many pangs if thou will learn to think of thyself as

being in Him”—accepted in the Beloved, finding Him our all in all.” – Charles Hadden Spurgeon

This week’s Memory Verse: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you

are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” - Colossians 2:9-10

So…what’s it to me? - As a result of today’s study I am going to …

Day 3

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians Chapters 1-4

As you read, circle the words Fill, fullness, knowledge, know and truth and list them below

fill fullness knowledge know truth

Today’s Quote – “The four Prison Epistles of Paul which include the Epistle to the Colossians

have been called the anatomy of the Church because their subjects cover all aspects of the

Christian faith. In Colossians our attention is directed to the head of the body who is Christ.” –

Dr. J. Vernon McGee in Thru the Bible

This week’s Memory Verse: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you

are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” - Colossians 2:9-10

Day 4

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 1

As you re-read Colossians 1 give each of these sections listed below a title and then summarize

the section in one sentence.

Section Title Summary

Col. 1:1-2

Col. 1:3-8

Col. 1:9-14

Col. 1:15-20

Col. 1:21-23

Col. 1:24-29

Today’s Quote - This Epistle bears a striking resemblance to Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians.

However, it is a resemblance without repetition. Ephesians views believers as seated with Christ

in heavenly places. Colossians, on the other hand, sees believers on earth, with Christ, their

glorified Head, in heaven. The emphasis in Ephesians is that the believer is in Christ. Colossians

speaks of Christ in the believer, the hope of glory.” -- Dr. William MacDonald in The Believer’s

Bible Commentary

This week’s Memory Verse: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you

are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” - Colossians 2:9-10

So…what’s it to me? - As a result of today’s study I am going to

the section in one sentence.

Section Title Summary

Col. 2:1-5

Col. 2:6-10

Col. 2:11-15

Col. 2:16-23

Today’s Quote – “Colossians has a powerful message for our day: the centrality of the all-

sufficient Christ. Like the Colossians, we have lost our focus and have been engaging in the

futile effort to find meaning by blending together religions of one kind or another or blending

religious expression with ideas of philosophy.” Dr. Maxie Dunnam in The Preacher’s

Commentary

This week’s Memory Verse: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you

are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” - Colossians 2:9-10

Col. 3:15-17

Col. 3:18-21

Col. 3:22-4:1

Today’s Quote - Three purposes seem to have been in Paul’s mind as he wrote Colossians. First,

he sought to show the deity and supremacy of Christ in the face of the Colossian heresy (1:18;

2:9). Second, he wanted to lead believers into spiritual maturity (1:28; 2:6-7). Third, he wanted

to inform them about his state of affairs and elicited their prayers on his behalf (4:2-8). Dr.

Norman Geisler in The Bible Knowledge Commentary

This week’s Memory Verse: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you

are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” - Colossians 2:9-10

Today’s Quote – “Paul was motivated to say all of the above because he was concerned that the

Colossians were being led astray…. We are subject to space-age subtleties which the apostle

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 2:6-10

Reread Colossian 2:6-7 and answer the following questions.

1. How are we to walk in Christ?

2. Try to explain the following ideas.

Rooted in Him

Built-up in Him

Established in the faith

4. What other trait should characterize us?

Today’s Quote – We are to walk in Christ the same way we originally received Christ—

by faith. The gnostic teachers wanted to introduce some “new truths” for Christian maturity, but

Paul denounced them. “You started with Christ and you must continue with Christ,” Paul wrote.

“You started with faith and you must continue with faith. This is the only way to make spiritual

progress.” – Dr. Warren Wiersbe in Be Complete

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 2:6-10

Reread Colossian 2:8 and answer the following questions.

1. What does Paul want the Colossians to beware of?

2. Specifically what kind of philosophy are we to beware of?

3. Can you give an example of this kind of philosophy?

4. How is Jesus the standard for all philosophy?

Today’s Quote - Paul was concerned that no false teachers take the Colossian believers captive

through hollow and deceptive philosophy. He wrote here not against all philosophy but against

false philosophy, as the Bible also speaks against false religion.

Reread Colossian 2:9-10 and answer the following questions.

1. What dwells in Christ?

2. What has God done for us in Him?

3. What does it mean to be “complete in Him”?

4. How does this relate to verse 8?

Today’s Quote – “You are complete in Christ, Paul says. Possessing Him, or being possessed by

Him, you are fulfilled. Having Him you have all you need. This is the supreme reality: the

complete being of God is revealed in Jesus Christ; in Him the completeness to which we are

called is an accomplished fact; we appropriate that fullness for ourselves by yielding ourselves to

the indwelling Christ” – Dr. Maxie Dunnam in The Preacher’s Commentary

Reread Colossian 2:11-12 and answer the following questions.

1. What kind of circumcision have we experienced?

2. What other two things have happened to us?

3. How are these accomplished?

For further study please read Romans 6:3-4.

Today’s Quote – “Paul is telling them to get rid of that which is outward. The real circumcision

is the New Birth. He explained this to the Galatians: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision

availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature” (Gal. 6:15). You and I become new

creatures when we come to Christ and trust Him as our Savior. We rest in Him; we are identified

with Him.” – Dr. J. Vernon McGee in Thru the Bible

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 2:11-15

Reread Colossian 2:13-15 and answer the following questions.

1. How are we made alive?

2. How did Jesus Christ take care of our sins?

3. What did Jesus do to the principalities and powers?

For further study please read Hebrews 2:14.

Today’s Quote – “The apostle says our guilt was like a “written code”—an IOU signed by our

own hand, promising to obey God. This, by our lack of obedience, announced our guilt. The

Jews had contracted to obey the Law of Moses The Gentiles had countersigned through their

consciences to keep the moral Law as they understood it. The burden of guilt was immense. The

more they and we sinned, the more the decrees became “against us” and “opposed to us.” Christ

took the IOUs and nailed them to the Cross above his head (just as the charges were nailed over

him by Pilate), and then completely forgave us all.” – R. Kent Hughes in Preaching the Word,

Day 29

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 2:16-23

Re-read Colossians 2:16-17 and answer the following questions.

1. In what areas should we not allow people to judge us?

2. Why, according to verse 17, are we not to allow others to judge us in these areas?

3. What would be an equivalent to these types of legalistic areas today?

4. Have you ever allowed yourself to be judged for not keeping a certain legalistic standard?

Today’s Quote - The false teachers at Colosse laid down rigid restrictions with regard to eating

and drinking and with regard to the observance of the religious calendar. "Therefore" shows that

this and the following warnings grow out of what Paul says of Christ's complete sufficiency in

the preceding verses. There is perhaps a special reference to his removal of the law and his

triumph over the forces of evil.-- Dr. Curtis Vaughn in The Expositors Bible Commentary

This Week’s Memory Verse – Colossians 3:1-2 - If then you were raised with Christ, seek

those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on

things above, not on things on the earth.

Day 30

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 2:16-23

Re-read Colossians 2:18-19 and answer the following questions.

1. What is the warning about being cheated?

2. How could we be cheated of our reward according to verse 18?

3. Who are we to hold onto in order to safeguard ourselves?

4. How is the growth of the body described here?

Today’s Quote - Perhaps the Gnostics taught that they must approach God through angels, and

so in their supposed humility they worshiped angels rather than the Lord. We have something

similar to this in the world today. There are Roman Catholics who say that they would not think

of praying directly to God or to the Lord Jesus, and so their motto is “To Jesus through Mary.”

This seems to be a false humility on their part and a worshiping of a created being. Christians

should not allow anyone to rob them of their reward by such unscriptural practices. The word is

clear that there is “one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 2:5). --

Dr. William McDonald in The Believers Bible Commentary

Re-read Colossians 2:20-23 and answer the following questions.

1. What are we not to be subject to?

2. What is the source of these rules?

3. Of what value are these things in terms of dealing with our flesh?

4. Can you give an example of rules you have subjected yourself to that you thought would

make you spiritual?

Today’s Quote – “What we are dealing with here is “the pride that apes humility”…. . It is the

pride that says, “I deny myself, and I don’t do these things. Just look at me. I’m really sprouting

wings, and I shine my halo every morning.” Dr. J. Vernon McGee in Thru the Bible

This Week’s Memory Verse – Colossians 3:1-2 - If then you were raised with Christ, seek

Re-read Colossians 3:1-2 and answer the following questions.

1. What things are we to seek?

2. Why are we to seek them?

3. Where are our affections supposed to be aimed?

4. What things compete for our affections?

5. What are some things we shouldn’t set our affections on?

Today’s Quote – “Paul condemned legalism and mysticism; next he attacked and

condemned asceticism. An ascetic practices rigorous self-denial and even self-mortification in

order to become more spiritual. Ascetic practices were popular during the Middle Ages: wearing

hair shirts next to the skin, sleeping on hard beds, whipping oneself, not speaking for days

(maybe years), going without food or sleep, etc.” Dr. Warren Wiersbe in Be Complete

Re-read Colossians 3:3-4 and answer the following questions.

1. What does this say about our past?

2. What does this say about our future?

3. How does this affect our present?

4. For further study please read Philippians 3:20-21 & Romans 8:28-31.

Today’s Quote – “Paul’s reasoning is based on the past and future history of all true believers…

The world without Christ does not understand the source of our life in him. There is something

genuine about the believer which will tax the brightest intelligence to explain. In him there is

fullness. His fullness has passed into our emptiness, his righteousness into our sinfulness, his life

into our death. “ – R. Kent Hughes in Preaching the Word, Colossians and Philemon

Re-read Colossians 3:5-7 and answer the following questions.

1. What are we commanded to do regarding our natural inclinations?

2. What behaviors are said to be inappropriate for the believer?

3. Why are they said to be inappropriate?

4. Why is covetousness considered idolatry?

Today’s Quote – “Don’t miss the radical nature of this by looking only on the surface. Paul is

not talking about anything so superficial as Cinderella abandoning her servant rags to dress like a

princess for the ball. If you want to go to fantasyland for a picture, Paul is talking about

something like the prince who has become an ugly frog being kissed by a lovely maiden and

becomes a handsome prince again. But this is nothing as peripheral as dress or appearance: it is

our condition, our nature, that is changed. We are to “put to death” the “old man,” and “put on”

the “new man.” Dr. Maxie Dunnam in The Preacher’s Commentary

This Week’s Memory Verse – Colossians 3:1-2 - If then you were raised with Christ, seek

Re-read Colossians 3:8-11 and answer the following questions.

1. What activities are we to put off?

2. Why shouldn’t we lie to each other?

3. Whose image is the “new man” created after?

4. In Christ what happens to traditional barriers? Why?

Today’s Quote - In the new man there is an obliteration of distinctions. National privilege has

been obliterated; ceremonial standings have been obliterated; cultural standings have been

obliterated; and social castes have been obliterated. Christ is all, and in all. Christ is absolutely

everything. -- Dr. Edward R. Roustio in The KJV Bible Commentary

Re-read Colossians 3:12-13 and answer the following questions.

1. How are we described in verse 12?

2. What type of behavior are we to put on?

3. To what extent are we to forgive someone according to verse 13?

4. For further study, please read Ephesians 4:25-32.

Today’s Quote - This section completes Paul’s exhortation to the Christian to live a holy life. It

continues the illustration of garments: “Put off … put on” He exhorted his readers to put off the

graveclothes of sin and the old life, and to put on the graceclothes” of holiness and the new life

in Christ. The emphasis in this section is on motives. Why should we put off the old deeds and

put on the qualities of the new life? Paul explained four motives that ought to encourage us to

walk in newness of life. – Dr. Warren Wiersbe in Be Complete

Re-read Colossians 3:14 and answer the following questions.

1. What else are we supposed to “put on”?

2. What does “above all” indicate?

3. How is love described?

4. For further study, please read 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 & 1 Peter 4:8

Today’s Quote – “The final article in this description of Christian attire is "love" (agape, the

distinctive Christian term for caring love….). All the virtues listed in vv. 12, 13 are, on the

highest level, manifestations of love; but love is larger than any one of them, indeed, larger than

all of them combined. The mention of love as a separate "article of clothing" is therefore not

superfluous”. – Dr. Curtis Vaughan in The Expositors Bible Commentary

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 3:12-17

Re-read Colossians 3:15 and answer the following questions.

1. What is to rule in our hearts?

2. What is the “one body”?

3. If “one body” means the church, is this verse talking about personal or corporate peace?

4. How could I let the peace of Christ rule in my church life, my interactions with other

believers? How does this relate to vs. 12-14?

Today’s Quote - “The surest sign that you are carrying a full bucket is wet feet.” That is true to

our experience, is it not? Whenever we attempt to carry a full bucket to clean the floor or wash

the car, we always get wet feet! And when our lives are full, they will overflow. “ – Dr. R.E.O

1. What are we commanded to do?

2. How is the word of Christ to dwell in us?

3. What will happen when the word of Christ dwells in us richly?

4. What steps can I take to obey this command?

For further study please read Ephesians 5:18-21.

1. How are we to do things?

2. What things are included in this command?

3. As we do things in the name of Jesus what are we supposed to be doing?

4. How can I do things “in the name of Jesus”?

For further study, please read 1 Corinthians 10:31.

Today’s Quote – “There are few exhortations in Scripture that are more comprehensive than this

one. “Word or deed” takes in everything in life. “Deeds” can be preaching, teaching, eating,

exercising, driving, cleaning house, shopping, visiting, working, playing (basketball, soccer,

tennis, fishing, even watching)—everything! Our words are everything that passes our lips, even

in unguarded moments. Everything we say or do is to be done “in the name of the Lord Jesus.” –

Re-read Colossians 3:18-19 and answer the following questions.

1. What is the specific command given to wives?

2. Why are they to obey this command?

3. What is the specific command given to husbands?

4. What is the second command given in this verse?

For further study, please read Titus 2:3-5, Ephesians 5:25 and

1 Peter 3:7.

Today’s Quote – “Husbands are responsible to love their wives (as Christ loved the church;

Eph. 5:28-29). So they are to exercise loving leadership, not dictatorial dominion. Perhaps

husbands need this reminder to be tender and loving as much or more than wives need the

reminder not to usurp authority over their husbands. Assuming absolute authority will only

embitter one’s wife, not endear her.”

1. What specific command is given to children?

2. Why are they to obey this command?

3. What is the specific command to fathers? (Also translated parents)

4. Why are they to obey this command?

For further study, please read Ephesians 6:1-4.

Today’s Quote – “Do not have the habit of exasperating your children. This is an old word (Gr

erethizō) and means to excite, to nag, to vex, to rouse to resentment (Eph 6:2–4). Fathers

exasperate their children by: being inconsiderate, being too demanding, being over-corrective,

and being unjust and severe. Parents also provoke their children by continual faultfinding,

always frowning, never smiling, and holding other children up as examples. The twig is to be

bent with caution, not broken.” – Dr. Edward R. Roustio in The KJV Bible Commentary

Re-read Colossians 3:22-23 and answer the following questions.

1. What command is given to servants?

2. How are they not to obey this command?

3. Why are they to obey this command?

4. How does this relate to our work for an employer?

For further study, please read Ephesians 6:5-8 and 1 Timothy 6:1-2

Today’s Quote - Paul upholds the duties of slave and master, of which the modern parallel is the

duties of employee and employer. Scripture never advocates slavery, but recognizes it as an

element of ancient society that could have been more beneficial if slaves and masters had treated

each other properly. Here, Paul followed Christ’s example and used slavery as a motif for

spiritual instruction, likening the believer to one who is a slave and servant to Jesus Christ and

seeing service to an earthly master as a way to serve the Lord. – Dr. John MacArthur in The

MacArthur Study Bible

This Week’s Memory Verse – Colossians 4:5-6 – Walk in wisdom toward those who are

Re-read Colossians 3:24-25 and answer the following questions.

1. What is the motivation behind doing our work unto the Lord?

2. Who are we actually working for?

3. What happens if we do wrong by our employer?

4. How is God’s judgment described?

Today’s Quote - Paul’s teaching here was accompanied by a great amount of tension, for several

reasons. Primary was the amazingly vast extent of slavery and its dehumanizing nature. Ancient

historians estimate that there were some 60,000,000 slaves in the Roman Empire, or about one-

half the population. Because of this, work was considered below the dignity of the slave-owning

Roman free man. Practically everything was done by slaves, even doctoring and teaching.

Though there were some felicitous relationships between masters and slaves, basically the lot of

a slave was not very happy – R. Kent Hughes in Preaching the Word, Colossians and Philemon

1. What are the masters commanded to do?

2. Why are they to obey this command?

3. How does this relate to today’s employers?

4. Who are employers answerable to?

Today’s Quote – “Just as the husbands and wives and parents and children have mutual and

reciprocal responsibilities, so do masters and servants. Paul admonished the Christian masters to

treat their servants with fairness and honesty. This would be a new idea to Roman masters

because they considered their slaves as “things,” and not people. Masters had almost total control

over their slaves and could do with them whatever they pleased. Few unsaved Roman masters

ever thought of treating their slaves with fairness, for slaves deserved nothing.” – Dr. Warren

Wiersbe in Be Complete

Fifty Days of “Christ Is All and All I Need”

Day 46

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 4:2-18

Re-read Colossians 4:2-4 and answer the following questions.

1. What are the believers commanded to do?

2. In what manner are they told to do it?

3. What specific request are they asked to pray for?

4. How should these verses affect our prayer lives?

For further study, please read Ephesians 6:18-20.

Today’s Quote – “What an important lesson there is for us in this! It is all too possible for us to

go around opening doors for ourselves in Christian service. But this is a peril to be avoided. If

the Lord opens the doors for us, then we can confidently enter them, knowing that He is leading.

On the other hand, if we open the doors for ourselves, then we cannot be sure that we are in the

center of the Lord’s will, and we might soon be stooping to carnal means to carry on the so-

called work of the Lord.”- William McDonald in The Believers Bible Commentary

This Week’s Memory Verse – Colossians 4:5-6 – Walk in wisdom toward those who are

outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you

may know how you ought to answer each one.

Day 47

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 4:2-18

Re-read Colossians 4:5-6 and answer the following questions.

1. How are we to walk among those without Christ?

2. What does it mean to “redeem the time”?

3. How should we speak?

4. What do you think “seasoned with salt” means?

For further study, please read Ecclesiastes 10:12 and Matthew 10:16.

Today’s Quote - “Redeeming the time.” Buy up your opportunities. When you see an

opportunity, pray that the Lord will lead you. Don’t force yourself on people. Just pray and ask

the Lord to open the door, and He will open it. I wish I had space to tell you how many times this

has happened in my life and in the lives of others. Let Him open the door—before you make the

mistake of putting your foot in your mouth. I knocked on many doors when I was a pastor, and I

often stepped in and put my foot in my mouth the very first thing. Since then I have learned to do

a lot more praying before I walk in.”

-- Dr. J. Vernon McGee in Thru the Bible

Day 48

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 4:2-18

Re-read Colossians 4:7-11 and answer the following questions.

1. How is Tychicus described?

2. How is Onesimus described?

3. How is Aristarchus described?

4. How are they all characterized?

5. How would you want to be described?

For further study, please read Philemon.

Today’s Quote - When Paul was arrested, Tychicus, along with Dr. Luke and others, stayed

with Paul through the “thick and thin” of his arrest and imprisonment in Caesarea, his dramatic

appearances before kings and governors, his miserable voyage and shipwreck en route to Rome,

and his residence in Rome awaiting trial. Thus we see that Tychicus was a man of intense

devotion to God and Paul.”

Day 49

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 4:2-18

Re-read Colossians 4:12-15 and answer the following questions.

1. How is Epaphras described?

2. What does he do for the Colossian believers?

3. What is his attitude toward the believers from his home area?

4. What example does he provide for us?

For further study, please read Colossians 1:7 and Philemon 23 .

Today’s Quote – “Epaphras did not pray around the world for everybody in general and nobody

in particular. He centered his intercession on the saints in Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis. No

doubt he mentioned some of them by name. Prayer for Epaphras was not an impersonal religious

exercise, for he carried these people in his heart and prayed for them personally.”

Day 50

Today’s Assignment – Read Colossians 4:2-18

Re-read Colossians 4:16-18 and answer the following questions.

1. What commands are given regarding epistles?

2. What command is given to Archippus ?

3. What does Paul ask for as he closes?

For further study, please read Philemon 2 and Hebrews 13:3.

Today’s Quote – “The heroes of the faith, mostly unsung and unknown, are celebrated by Paul

and we are inspired. On the ship of the church there are no passengers; all are members of the

crew. The church is not a trumpet corps, but an orchestra; each member a different instrument

playing a unique sound. Added to the sounds of others, the symphony of the gospel is lived and

shared with the world.”

- Dr. Maxie Dunnam in The Preachers Commentary

This Week’s Memory Verse - : “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and

you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” - Colossians 2:9-10
