Summon is a starting point
“….Summon is a search tool that will provide a single-starting point to find and access the majority of UBC Library’s collections -- including books, ebooks, scholarly journals and articles, newspaper articles, dissertations and theses, videos, maps, manuscripts, music scores, digitized items, and more. It is a hosted service from Serials Solutions, with the Summon knowledge base and UBC Library content combined into one unified index….”

Giustini, Barsky | UBC Library | March 2011
No records from our “specialized catalogues” Includes UBC Archives, Bibliographies & Reading Rooms Unindexed content from our indexes & databases Pre-prints & grey literature on the web Very recent content
Serials Solutions get its metadata from: Directly from publishers, and scrapes their websites Metadata is not scraped from aggregators or indexes Updates from our catalogue are loaded daily
What is NOT in Summon

Giustini, Barsky | UBC Library | March 2011
How does it work?1. Enter search terms | use wildcards “?” and “*”2. Terms are matched to metadata in Summon Database3. Results are filtered against Serials Solution Knowledgebase (a collection holding
every online resource available and where we “turn on” resources the UBC Library subscribes to…)
4. Filtered results (results to which we have access) are displayed 5. Links from results lead to OpenURL resolver (soon 360 Link), UBC Library
Catalogue or directly to item on the web
Tip: Have you devised a good search? Subscribe to its RSS feed to know when the UBC Library adds new results

• Is it true that 400 million records are newspaper articles?
• Does Summon solve “Grey literature” searching?
• Access to native interfaces• Subject access is still needed for scholarly searches• Links to native interfaces
