Nike, Inc. (pronounced/naki/;NYSE:NKE) is a major publicly traded sportswear and equipment supplier

based in the United States. The company is headquartered nearBeaverton, Oregon, which is part of thePortland

metropolitan area. It is the world's leading supplier ofathletic shoesandapparel[3]

and a major manufacturer

ofsports equipment, with revenue in excess of US$18.6 billion in its fiscal year 2008 (ending May 31, 2008). As

of 2008, it employed more than 30,000 people worldwide. Nike andPrecision Castpartsare the onlyFortune

500companies headquartered in the state of Oregon, according toThe Oregonian.

The company was founded on January 25, 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports byBill BowermanandPhilip

Knight,[1]

and officially became Nike, Inc. on May 30, 1978. The company takes its name fromNike(Greek ,

pronounced[nk]), the Greek goddess of victory. Nike markets its products under its own brand, as well as

Nike Golf, Nike Pro,Nike+,Air Jordan,Nike Skateboarding, and subsidiaries includingCole Haan,Hurley

International,UmbroandConverse. Nike also owned Bauer Hockey (later renamedNike Bauer) between 1995

and 2008.[4]

In addition to manufacturing sportswear and equipment, the company operates retail stores under

the Niketown name. Nike sponsors many high profile athletes and sports teams around the world, with the highly

recognized trademarks of "Just do it" and theSwooshlogo.

Nike, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS), was founded byUniversity of Oregontrack athlete Philip

Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman in January 1964. The company initially operated as a distributor for

Japanese shoe makerOnitsuka Tiger(nowASICS), making most sales at track meets out of Knight's

automobile.[5]

Environmental record

Nike tries to counteract the detrimental effect with different projects. According to the New England-based

environmental organization Clean Air-Cool Planet, Nike ranks among the top three companies (out of 56) in a

survey of climate-friendly companies.[34]

One campaign that Nike began for Earth Day 2008 was a

commercial that featured basketball starSteve Nashwearing Nike's Trash Talk Shoe, which had been

constructed in February 2008 from pieces of leather and synthetic leather waste from factory floors. The Trash

Talk Shoe also featured a sole composed of ground-up rubber from a shoe recycling program. Nike claims this is

the first performance basketball shoe that has been created from manufacturing waste, but it only produced

5,000 pairs for sale.

Another project Nike has begun is called Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program. This program, started in 1993, is Nike's

longest-running program that benefits both the environment and the community by collecting old athletic shoes of

any type in order to process and recycle them. The material that is produced is then used to help create sports

surfaces such as basketball courts, running tracks, and playgrounds.[37]

A project through theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hillfound workers were exposed to

toxicisocyanatesand other chemicals in footwear factories inThailand. In addition to inhalation, dermal exposure

was the biggest problem found. This could result in allergic reactions including asthmatic reactions .[38][39]
