Resource Groups
Resource Groups
Deploy, manage and monitor in a group
Resources should be same lifespan
Each resource can only exist in a single resource
group
Resources can be moved between resource groups
Resources can be assigned to different regions within
the resource group

Account
Subscription

Easy to manage
Easy to move
Easy to delete when not needed
Virtual Machine - Storage
Models
West DC
East DC > 400 miles
Defend against regional disasters
Geo replication
Virtual Machine Storage
Virtual Machine Storage Architecture
Azure Virtual Machine
C:\

Data Disks (1 TB)
D:\
Temporary Disk
(Contents can be
lost)Disk Cache
Virtual machine SLA
For all Virtual Machines that have two or more instances deployed
across two or more Availability Zones in the same Azure region, we
guarantee you will have Virtual Machine Connectivity to at least one
instance at least 99.99% of the time.
For all Virtual Machines that have two or more instances deployed in
the same Availability Set, we guarantee you will have Virtual Machine
Connectivity to at least one instance at least 99.95% of the time.
For any Single Instance Virtual Machine using premium storage for all
Operating System Disks and Data Disks, we guarantee you will have
Virtual Machine Connectivity of at least 99.9%.
Gallery and Image Models
Image Families• VHDs managed and supported by Microsoft. Some
may include pre-installed software and configuration.
Partner Images
• VHDs uploaded by partners for application consumption by the Azure customer. VMs deployed using partner images are not deployed on the same cluster or clusters as other VM workloads.
Latest Images• Images are kept as versions in Azure. Typically, you
would want to choose the latest image.
Customized Images
• Customer uploaded VHDs to leverage their own images. This is due to internal security, standard costs, and licensing scenarios.

Azure File Sync
Cloud tiering Turn a server into a lightweight, performance cache for Azure Files
Multi-site sync Keep a data set in sync across multiple locations
Direct cloud access Native file format with SMB or REST access
Integrated cloud backup Point-in-time recovery and retention policies without redundant data transfer
Rapid file server DR Fast namespace sync with no need to wait for data restore

Virtual Networks
Virtual Networks• Isolation and segmentation
• By default, all resource can
communicate outbound to the
Internet
• Services in the same Vnet can
communicate with each other
• Filter traffic using NSG or NVA
• Bring our own DNS
• Public or Private IPs
• Connect VNets using Network
Peering
On-Premise Connectivity - VPN
Site to Site
Connect on-prem to the
Azure Vnet
IPSec/IKE VPN tunnel
VPN device is required
Public facing IP address
Point to Site
Remote users (anyone
using NAT)
SSTP
IKEv2 (used for Mac devices)
On-Premises VPN
On-Premises Connectivity – Express Route
Private connection
through you
provider
Office 365 an
Dynamics 365
Does not use the
Internet
Faster, more reliable
Lower latencies
Higher security
Availability Sets
Availability Sets
High availability
Virtual machine resources are grouped to ensure the
resources are always available
Resources are spread across:
Multiple physical servers
Multiple racks
Network switches
Storage units
Availability Set Example
Availability Sets – Gotcha’s
Availability set must be created when the virtual
machine is created
Virtual machines can only be added to availability
sets during provisioning
Virtual machine owners are NOT notified if their virtual
machines are not going to be available
Never put a single virtual machine in an availability
set
Load Balancing
Public Load Balancer
Maps public IP
and ports from
incoming traffic
to internal
resources
Internal Load Balancer
Load balance
between virtual
machines in the
Vnet
Multi-tier
applications
Cross-premises
VNets
Azure Backup
On-premises to Azure
Windows virtual machines
Servers
Azure Virtual Machines
Azure File Shares
