With the mission of Delivering Chemical and Process Engineering knowledge, skills and innovation for a sustainable tomorrow, the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering strives to educate, conduct research and offer consulting services with dedication, devotion and commitment and aim to be a place of excellence, through internationally recognized programs, for the benefit of the society. Currently, the department offers B Sc Engineering honors degree, in chemical and process engineering, with three fields of minor specialization namely, food and biochemical engineering, energy and environmental engineering and polymer engineering. Up to 2011, the number of admissions to the department was limited to 80, and it was expanded to 90 since, the 2012 intake. In addition, the department offers M Sc programs and postgraduate diploma programs, for the individuals and industries to develop their expertise and knowledge, with the opportunity to get familiar with the latest technology. The department is immensely proud of having a well qualified and dynamic group of academics, well capable of ‘passing the torch’ so to speak. Having earned, a good degree of recognition among the academic community, for their contributions towards the betterment of the field, as educators of the chemical and process engineering discipline, they are easily approachable and are ever willing to address student issues, whatever they may be. Chemical and process engineering department is facilitated with many vital resources such as, well equipped laboratories and workshops for energy, environmental studies, food processing, microbiology, chemistry, polymer and latex processing, unit operations, and process control which assist undergraduate and postgraduate study and research work. The computer aided process development laboratory of the department is fully equipped with latest generation desktops and the most recent addition to the family, a supercomputer with 32 cores and 64 GB RAM, is readily utilized for process modeling and simulation work. The department holds hands with the government and the industry by providing unique consultancy services to optimize their processes, reduce energy and carbon footprints that eventually lead them to maximize profits and become leaders in both local and international markets. With the proud history of 43 years of academic excellence and with the potentials in hand, the department of chemical and process engineering, university of moratuwa, will thrive for generations, delivering professionals, fully capable of taking Sri Lanka and the world to a sustainable future.
