Develop students who value math and see it as useful to solving problems and making sense of the world.
Engage all students in experiences that help them reach proficiency (UCARE).
Ensure that all students master the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to be college and career ready.
Prepare students with the desire and skills necessary to have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) or other college-level math courses in high school.

Backmapped from AP Aligned to internationally driven standards
Broad focus—multiple topics per grade/course
More focused—fewer topics per grade/course
Emphasis on covering content—pacing
Emphasis on deep understanding—proficiency
Topics repeated yearly—spiraling
Topics taught to mastery— increased depth and application
Acceleration by grade-level skipping—driven by targets
Acceleration/Enrichment—based on individual student needsEmphasis on student engagement and project-based learning

Curriculum 2.0Key Messages
Conceptual understanding facilitates the acquisition of procedural fluency.
The goal when working with operations is fluency with understanding.
The mathematical expectations within the C2.0/CCSS mathematics indicators require a deeper understanding by both teachers and students.
Curriculum 2.0Shift from Information Transmission Model to Comprehensive Mathematics Instruction Model
Topics of Study in Math 6 2.0: * Ratios and Proportional RelationshipsUnderstand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. The Number SystemApply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Expressions and EquationsApply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. GeometrySolve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Statistics and ProbabilityDevelop understanding of statistical variability.Summarize and describe distributions. * The topics of study listed above may not necessarily be taught in the order listed.
C2.0 Algebra 1Structure
Unit 1: Relationships between Quantities and Reasoning with Equations
Unit 2: Linear and Exponential Relationships
Unit 3: Descriptive Statistics Unit 4: Quadratic Relationships Unit 5: Generalizing Function Properties
Assessing the New Standards
Maryland is a member of a test development consortium of states––the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).
The PARCC assessments will replace the MSA in Grades 3–8 and the Algebra 1 HSA. PARCC also will have a Geometry and Algebra 2 assessment.
The baseline year of assessment is planned for 2014-2015. PARCC assessments are expected to be more challenging than MSA
and HSA. Learn more and see examples of test questions:

Compare MSA to PARCC Questions
This PARCC item measures understanding of the same concept a grade earlier (Grade 4) and with greater depth

As always, we want our students to question what we tell them, not just accept it.
