International Workshop

SOLAR ENERGY IN THE MENA COUNTRIES FROM MULTIPLE SOCIAL SCIENCE

PERSPECTIVES

El-Mouradi Hotel, Gammarth, Tunis

12th-14th November 2012, Tunisia

Understanding socioeconomic developments of renewable energies in general, and solar energies in particular, warrants the adoption of an interdisciplinary approach that establishes communication between dierent disciplines, with the hope that this “cross-fertilisation” can help to overcome the limitations of ‘single viewpoints’ and ‘limited thinking’ in addressing issues of renewable energy innovations and in understanding social acceptance.

"Social sciences" is commonly used as a broad umbrella term to refer to a plurality of elds outside of the natural sciences. It is concerned with society and human behaviors that may include, but is not limited to, anthropology, economics, history, commu-nication studies, political science and international relations, sociology, geography, law, and psychology.

The intended workshop will bring together researchers (Professors, Post-Doc's, PhD and Masters students) from the several disciplines of the “social sciences”, to focus on the dierent aspects of the energy problem in the MENA countries and to discuss new theoretical concepts and innovative techno-logies and approaches with the aim to foster a truly interdiscipli-nary, open-minded exchange of ideas linked with the broad question of social acceptance of energy deployment.

The workshop will provide a unique opportunity to explore research and work done at institutions in Germany, in the MENA countries and eventually elsewhere, to meet and network with participants with similar interests and to nd common grounds for future co-operation between research teams, business companies and institutions interested in resolving social accep-tance problems of energy in general and of solar energy in particular.

This workshop is organized by TU Dresden and the DESERTEC University Network and is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service ‘DAAD’ and the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientic Research. The Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy and Jacob’s University are actively involved as co-organizers.
