Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BackgroundImplying a massive preparation for the professional and corporate society, civil

engineering field established a milestone of necessity to the civilized nations. The profession

became responsible in bringing up the mentality of secularism and transforms it into a

technology-driven principle that is expected to nourish the community. This field of engineering

is widely needed to respond ails of different sectors. These ails became more complex as time

runs through history. The profession addresses the necessities of environment, forces of nature,

forces made by men or the energy that bequeaths earth and heavenly bodies. It necessitates

scientific approach of analysis to different natural and secondary forces to augment co-existence

with nature and human race.

Aiming to contribute in the professional society and national worforce, !"#-"ast Asia

$ollege opened the doors to the young who wished to train to become a civil engineer on %&&'.

The first batch of civil engineering students trained at various levels of academic competency

and massive preparation to pass the board examination. (ince the $ollege)s opening to the

academic community, it highlighted itself to serving the society with professionalism that is

catered upon the future professionals of Information Technology and "ngineering fields.

To respond in the need of having quality professionals, tertiary education is not enough to

assure that a graduate of a certain program is sufficiently reliable to *oin the worforce.

Therefore, since the creation of systematic professional ethics, it was imposed that licensure

examination must be a primary measurement to guarantee quality specialization.

+n ay ', %&&, !"#-"ast Asia $ollege)s first batch of civil engineering graduates

too the licensure examination. The first graduates of $ivil "ngineering had anotable './0

passing rate versus 12.2'0 national passing rate on ay %&& licensure examination.aing its

name in the academic community, the $ollege offered other engineering programs that will cater

the society)s need of professionals.

In the educational community, several institutions paved its way to mae their bests in the

licensure examination. The result and passing rate of the colleges in the board examinationare

alwaysconducive and persuading factor for the incoming freshmen and inquiring transferees. In

comparison to the passing rate of other institutions, !"#-"ast Asia $ollege was listed as top

performing school in the field of civil engineering due to the massive passers it produced and

above-average passing rate it mared on the licensure examination. Therefore, it is with clear

view upon veracity of information, that the $ollege is a great contributor to the professional and

corporate society.

After several years since the establishment of the $ollege, a typical concentration of

transferred students was observed. Transferees, who are from nearby mainline universities

contests their ingenuity by being passers of the board exam using the name of !"#-"ast Asia

$ollege.

3ue to the significant number of transfer students enrolling in the $ollege, the $ivil

"ngineering 3epartment became unrelated in analyzing the graduates) performances in the

licensure examinations. The department further connotes the significance of nowing the

comparative status of the students in terms of its academic competency without merging the

intellect of transfer students in order to address the genuine problem in the fields and sub*ects

tacled.

Also, it is very conducive that the licensure examination results significantly affect the

reputable status of the $ollege that is why the department necessitates itself to now the root

cause of dilemma and its statistical analysis.

1.2 Significance of the Study

The study will be very beneficial to the !"# 4 "ast Asia $ollege $ivil "ngineering

3epartment which has immediate concern in providing tutelage to its studentry. The study will

serve as a founding reference for the best approach of education in the $ollege)s civil

engineering department which aims for better passing rates and aims to produce quality and

principled professionals to *oin the worforce.

The research will also be advantageous to the institutional society which will base its

methods of improvement with veracity to the study the researchers have made. Also, the study

will be a beneficial and an effective reference for the future researchers who will conduct related

research.

This study will be a useful reference to the conceptual analysis of the $ollege)s database

and performance. In effect, the civil engineering department may revise the strategy of teaching

to its student with respect to the enhancement needed that will result to improvement of licensure

examination passing rate. 5ith a good passing rate and famous affiliation in the professional

society, the $ollege will be a standard of preference in the academic community for which the

department is aiming for.

1.3 O!ecti"e# of the Study

The main ob*ective of this study is to identify the statistical value and the percentage of

civil engineering board passers with respect to the nature of their residency in the $ollege.

(pecifically it aims to6

a. To identify and analyze the percentage of genuinely enrolled students from

freshmen years and transfer students who graduated from the $ollege and too

the civil engineering licensure examination b. To identify and analyze the institution from which the transfer students came

fromc. To identify and analyze the reasons of moving-off of the transfer students

1.$ Scope and %i&itation#

The research will cover the licensure exam passers of !"#-"ast Asia $ollege who

graduated from the $ollege and licensure exam passers of !"#-"ast Asia $ollege who are

transferred students from other institution. It will be focusing in the statistical analyses of

examinees for board examination who are genuinely enrolled from freshmen years and

examinees who transferred from other mainline institutions.

The study will also cover repeater examinees who graduated from the $ollege, whether

transfer or genuinely enrolled from freshmen years. The study will also include the performance

of the $ollege in the licensure examination, and its passing rate compared to the national passing

rate.

The study will be limited to the study of $ivil "ngineering board passers of !"#-"ast

Asia $ollege from ay %&& to ay %&'1.

The study will be considering a conceptual framewor, as shown in !igure '.', which

will guide the researchers in the span of the research. It will be composed of initial input, the

method of conduct and the desired output. :reater detail of the research will be fully and briefly

discussed in the methodology of the study.
