Nanded is the second largest city in theMarathwadaregion

ofMaharashtra,India. It is also headquarters of 4 districts named Nanded,

Parbhani, Hingoli and Latur in theMarathwada Divisionof thestate. It is an

important holy place for theSikhfaith and is famous for theHazur

SahibGurudwara.

Nanded has a uniqueness of its own due to its historical, social and political

importance. It is the second largest city in Marathwada after Aurangabad. Latur

and Parbhani districts are to the west of Nanded district; Yavatmal district lies

in the north.

Nanded is one of the largest districts in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra

comprising of 16 Talukas. Agriculture is the core economic strength of the

region. However district also has reasonable presence of Industrial activities,

majority of them are agro based. Nanded also gains its significance due the

presence of some of the important religious places for Sikhs and Hindus. Most of

the population in Nanded lives in urban area.

Nanded town with a population of over 13-14 lack is the epicenter of the region

driving its economic activities. However despite its inadequacies in

infrastructure, the region has inherent potential to be one of the good regional

destinations with sound socio economic fundamentals.

Nanded is second largest districts in Marathwada region with strong economic

base in the agriculture and related sectors

It also has significant potential to emerge as one of the foremost religious

tourism destinations in India

It has a relatively better population size within the city area with a high literacy

rate of and a reasonably good per capita income.

Nanded city has good presence in the education sector due to the location ofmany large educational institutions.

It has a growing services sector by virtue of presence of numerous banks,

telecom companies, IT services among others.

Overall the city has a potential to merge as one of the metropolis in relative

shorter time period provided its strengths are leveraged/ complemented through

appropriate infrastructure development and economic positioning.

The city is also well served in the education sector due to presence of quality

education institutions at school/ graduation as well as post graduate and

professional qualification. This is well complemented by vocational training

institutions.

Literacy

The city has registered a literacy level of 72.1%in the 2001 census. TherebyNanded Urban region has a well-educated and skilled population, which

could contribute to the development of the economy if the appropriate

economic initiatives are enunciated.

It is observed that the predominant part (93.28%) of city's population isoccupied in the tertiary activities. This is basically due to the large of amount

of trade and commercial activities concentrated in Nanded. Within tertiary

sector, about 33% of workforce is involved in trade and commerce while

about 14% each is involved in construction and transportation activities.

Tourism:

Nanded is conferred Holy City status due to the presence of

Huzur Sahib Gurudwara: Second most sacred place for Sikhs.

In Nanded City only there are 22 mid size Gurudwaras are situated.

Two of the 10 Jyothirlings that gain its significance due to being part of the

salvation circuit for Hindu pilgrimage.

Presence of the Mahur Renukadevi Mandir which is a very popular pilgrim

center in Maharashtra.

Transport

Nanded is connected with rest of India by Air, Roads and Railways.

Air

Nanded is connected by Air service to Mumbai, Delhi, Aurangabad and Nagpur.

The city has daily flight service to Mumbai through Aurangabad. It has four

flights in a week for Mumbai by Kingfisher Airlines and four flights in a week to

Mumbai, Delhi and Nagpur by Go Air. The nearest international airport

isHyderabad(284 kilometres). Nanded has the distinction of having

Marathwada regions first airport.

The airport has been upgraded at a cost of Rs. 940 million and the facilitiesavailable include a huge terminal building to handle 300 passengers and a

runway to handle big aircraft like Boeing 737s and Airbus 319-320. It also now

has three parking bays for large aircraft, six check-in counters, plush passenger

terminals, fuelling stations and all other passenger and flight operations

facilities, including night operations.

Due to the celebrations held in Oct 2008 to mark 300th death anniversary of

Guru Gobind Singh and consecration of Guru Granth Sahib as the last guru of

Sikh community by him, Nanded has received massive investment ininfrastructure development. Roads are being upgraded. A new railway platform

has been constructed near the existing Nanded railway station. A new Railway

Station (Suburb) at Maltekdi has been constructed and is functioning.

Rail

Direct trains are available to Nanded

fromMumbai,Aurangabad,Hyderabad,Bangalore,Nagpur,Patna,Delhi,Rameswaram,Pune,VisakhapatnamSriganganagar, Tirupati, Shirdi, Calcutta

andAmritsar. Nanded is one of the Divisional Headquarters of South Central

Railway. Nanded is a railways junction as a new rail line from Nanded-

Yawatmal-Wardha connecting further to Nagpur.

Nanded(NED) is the Divisional Headquarters of Nanded Division ofSouth

Central Railway(SCR) zone of theIndian Railways. The entire Nanded Division

was a part of Hyderabad Division.

Road

Nanded is 651 kilometre east ofMumbaiby road .It is on National Highway

No.222 which connects Kalyan Near Mumbai to Nirmal in A.P.and about six-

hour drive fromAurangabadandHyderabadand 11-hour drive fromPune.Several passenger bus services operate from Nanded providing easy overnight

connectivity with almost every major city in Maharashtra. These buses are

reasonably priced and fairly punctual. The comfort level differs greatly from

operator to operator.

National Highway 222 (NH222) passes through Nanded. NH 222 connects the

city of Kalyan near Mumbai in Maharashtra to Nirmal near Adilabad in Andhra

Pradesh. This is one of the longest highways in Maharashtra.
