Insensitive to macro- and microbending
– Almost no additional attenuation?
Through tight radii
• SMF: 5mm (G.652-D, G.657–A,B,”C”) • MMF <10mm (OM3, OM4)
– Suitable for bend-insensitive environment
• Allows to staple cables / to stress extremely • Allows almost careless handling • Handling as copper
The Innovation Corning ClearCurve Fibre

Options by new fibre technology Enables new fibre Technolgies • Slimmer cable designs
• Developing new application areas
• Smaller housings and applications
• Simplified installation and handling
• to increase reliability
Optical Communications © 2014 Corning Incorporated 13
The main reasons for bad connections?
• Slower switch or router?
• Dust or dirt?
• The administrator himself?
• The user
• An incorrectly installed cable?
• Your local Internet service provider (KPN)

By 2015, global IP traffic will reach
an annual run rate of 966
Exabytes per year
966 Exabytes is equal to: 8X more than all IP traffic
generated in 2008 (121 EB)
28 million DVDs per hour
Why we need a high speed transmission?

What is an Exabyte? One Trillion (1018) Bytes, or one
Billion Gigabyte, one Million Terabyte, or one Thousand Petabyte

WDM Transmission Wavelength-division multiplexing is a technology which multiplexes a number of optical signals onto a single optical fibre by using different wavelengths (or colours) of laser light. This techniques enables bidirectional communications over one strand of fibre, as well as multiplication of capacity
Analogy : If people in cars are data packets, to increase throughput we add more people/cars
Parallel Transmission Parallel optics interfaces differ from traditional fibre optic communication in that data is simultaneously transmitted and received over multiple fibres.
Analogy : If people in cars are data packets, to increase throughput we add more lanes on the
highway (the people/car and speed stays the same)

Resources | Glossary | Help Summary
• Data transmitted is growing exponentially - requiring solutions to operate networks at 40 and 100GbE or higher
• Network architectures have to change to adopt new technologies
• 40 GbE and 100 GbE are shipping now – 400G already in development
• OM3/4 fibres in the DC provides better TCO with Parallel Optics compared to WDM solutions
• Solutions are deployed with standards approved MPO/MTP or LC-Duplex style connectors.
