Media language: Form and conventions

There are a number of defining conventions of television crime dramas, one being narrative.

Different types of narrative

Some crime drama’s choose to show and solve a crime within one episode, whereas others may show a series of episodes

solving one crime, for example ITV drama series that are on for one week only, like ‘Appropriate adult’ showing at the moment.

Narratives within crime drama are also often organised around binary opposites, for example the conflict between

the forces of law and order and criminal activity.

Within those two different types of narrative you will also find different types of characters within the dramas that are solving the crimes. These can be defined in three ways:

1. Dramas which focus on the lives and work of the police themselves

2. Dramas which focus on the work of detectives

3. Dramas that focus on the work of other crime solving professionals.

Can you think of one example for each of the above?
