IntroductionThe Joint Archives of the Interna tional MissionaryCouncil and the Conference of British MissionarySocieties relating to India and Africa cover theperiod from the World Missionary Conferenceheld at Edinburgh in 1910 to 1945. From the spe-cifically missionary point of view, they differ fromthe already well-known archives of individualsocieties in that they deal with co-operation, bothnationally and internationally in, for examplestudy and action.

The archives concern chiefly India and BritishAfrica; but there is also much important materialon areas under Belgian, Portuguese and Frenchcontrol. Among the most important themescovered are many aspects of educational policy,the Indian independence movement and the earlydevelopment of such bodies as National ChristianCouncils.

The Material consists for the most part of corre-spondence and memoranda related especially totwo key figures: J.H. Oldham and W. Paton. Butthere is also printed material, much of which it isnow difficult to find elsewhere.
