I. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Title: Difficulties of English Proficiency among Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Broadcasting Student 1.2 Introduction: Students’ poor level of English proficiency has been a major concern in Malaysia and it has been an obstacle for students especially to adapt to the working environment. Hence, this report has been requested by the Head of Department of the Modern Languages of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman to conduct a survey which investigated the difficulties of English Proficiency among UTAR students. Furthermore, this study is also to discover the factors affecting the decrease of English proficiency among students as well as to identify the solutions to overcome it. 1.3 Background English language has been taught from primary school through secondary school, in Malaysia. 1.1 Title:

1.2 Introduction:

Students’ poor level of English proficiency has been a major concern in Malaysia and it

has been an obstacle for students especially to adapt to the working environment. Hence, this

report has been requested by the Head of Department of the Modern Languages of Universiti

Tunku Abdul Rahman to conduct a survey which investigated the difficulties of English

Proficiency among UTAR students. Furthermore, this study is also to discover the factors

affecting the decrease of English proficiency among students as well as to identify the solutions

to overcome it.

1.3 Background

English language has been taught from primary school through secondary school, in

Malaysia. Therefore, all Malaysian students would have studied English for at least 11 years and

this experience in English should have enable students to adapt to the language well, but most of

them still lack the ability to speak English accurately and fluently. It is of no doubt that students

who have learnt English for many years have gained knowledge about grammar and vocabulary,

they are able to read well and scored with flying colours in English exams. Nevertheless, there

are some students who lack in practicing in English speaking skills, as an outcome, they are

unable to communicate well in English in their daily lives. (Rao, 2002)

1.4 Problem Statement:

The proficiency of Malaysian students in English is slowly deteriorating and has raised many

concerns.

This research study endeavors to know the English Proficiency level of the students of UTAR

and their difficulties of English proficiency as well as factors that affect the English proficiency.

1.6 Objectives:

The objectives of this study is to:

1. To identify the UTAR broadcasting students’ difficulties of using English in their daily

lives

2. To discuss the factors affecting English proficiency of UTAR broadcasting students.

1.7 Research Questions:

1. What are the difficulties of English proficiency among UTAR broadcasting students?

2. What are the factors affecting English proficiency of UTAR broadcasting students?

1.8 Significance of study:

This study is vital to the Department of Modern Languages of UTAR to develop and

nurture students with good English proficiency so that they are well prepared for the working

environment to communicate in English fluently and confidently. Besides that, this study is to

discover the difficulties of students adapting to the language and factors affecting their

proficiency and to raise awareness of the importance of good English in Malaysia nowadays.

1.9 Scope:

This reports examines the difficulties of English proficiency on UTAR students and

discovering the ways to increase proficiency.

Our major target respondents are aimed specifically at the broadcasting students of

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman where it is important for the students to understand and

comprehend English so that they are well prepared for the working environment. Therefore, a

series of questionnaire have been constructed to outsource the information from our targeted

respondents. This study involves 40 UTAR broadcasting students during their second year of the

course. It is focused on the levels and difficulties of English proficiency as well as factors

affecting their levels of English proficiency.
